The read
AJ Dybantsa finally makes his NBA debut tonight at Rocket Arena, but the No. 1 pick isn't why I'm on Washington. I'm here because 9.5 points is a lot to ask of a Cleveland team that hasn't proven it can close.
The Cavs have built big leads. They led Philadelphia by 29 and lost, then led Brooklyn by 22 and won by 4. Their three margins this season are -8, +4 and +2. The last one came in overtime at home against a Minnesota team on the second night of a back-to-back. Philly won the fourth quarter 32-16, and Brooklyn won it 41-29. Cleveland has scored 358 points and allowed 360. I'm not laying almost double digits with that team.
The schedule helps too. Cleveland plays in Atlanta tomorrow, and Monday's overtime pushed Harden to 39 minutes, Mitchell and Mobley to 38 and Watson to 37. If the Cavs go up 20 in the third, Kenny Atkinson has every reason to sit them, and that's when the backdoor opens. Washington is off tomorrow and can play its guys all night.
The Wizards' offense doesn't depend on hitting jumpers. They've scored at least 56 in the paint in three of four games. Anthony Davis is averaging nearly 23 points, and Trae Young is at over 22 points and 11 assists a night. Cleveland has given up 64 and 60 in the paint in two of its three games and committed at least 23 fouls in all three. And the Cavs give it away, averaging close to 19 turnovers.
The risks are real. Tre Johnson and Justin Champagnie are out, and Dybantsa is reportedly on a minutes limit, so Washington is thin. The Wizards are 37-for-126 from three. Toronto and Charlotte grabbed 19 and 20 offensive rebounds against them, which is a problem with Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley waiting. If Cleveland shoots like it did Monday, when it went 18-for-45 from deep, this could be over early.
Washington's two wins came against teams that are now 1-3, so I'm not calling the Wizards good. But it's too many points for a Cleveland team whose best win is by 4. Give me Washington plus the points.

The research

HEAD-TO-HEAD
CLE won last season's series 4-0
4-0Cleveland swept Washington 4-0 last season and won those games by 18.8 points on average, a one-sided series. Tonight is the first meeting this season, and rosters change, so last year's margin is background more than a forecast. Washington is without Tristan Vukcevic and Jamir Watkins. A history this lopsided often inflates the spread, so the question is how much of it still applies.
REPLACEMENT
Justin Champagnie is OUT for WAS
OUTJustin Champagnie misses Washington's trip to Cleveland with a right foot injury. AJ Dybantsa is questionable with an ankle sprain, so check the final report to see how short Washington's wings are.
Tristan Vukcevic is OUT for WAS
OUTWashington is without Tristan Vukcevic because of a hip impingement.
Jamir Watkins is OUT for WAS
OUTJamir Watkins is out for Washington as he recovers from left ACL surgery, a long-term absence the market already reflects.
Khalifa Diop is OUT for CLE
OUTKhalifa Diop is on G League assignment, which does not change Cleveland's rotation against Washington.
Nae'Qwan Tomlin is OUT for CLE
OUTNae'Qwan Tomlin is out with a low back stress reaction. That injury can keep a player out longer than soreness would, so expect a longer absence. This is a depth change for Cleveland.
Ernest Udeh, Jr. is OUT for CLE
OUTErnest Udeh, Jr. is a two-way player in the G League. This has little impact on Cleveland tonight.
AJ Dybantsa is Questionable for WAS
QuestionableAJ Dybantsa is questionable with a left ankle sprain. Champagnie is already out for Washington, so check the final report before betting anything that depends on Washington's wings.
SITUATIONAL
Both sides on 2 days rest
2d bothWashington and Cleveland each have 2 days off, so rest is even. The schedule gives no reason to lean either way here.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKTRAE YOUNGASSISTS OVER 9.5
Trae has run this offense from the opening tip of the season: 13 assists against Milwaukee, 12 against Toronto, 9 in Chicago and 10 in Charlotte. He is playing 37 minutes a night, and almost every Washington possession starts in his hands. The Wizards live in the paint, with 56 to 70 paint points in three of four games. A lot of that comes from Davis finishing what Trae creates, and Davis has scored 29 and 34 in two of those games.
Cleveland has played fast and loose with the ball. The Cavs have committed 21 and 23 turnovers in two of three games and given up plenty in transition, so this game should have the kind of pace that adds possessions for a passer. Dybantsa's debut gives Trae another athletic finisher on the wing. Coulibaly, who started the first four games, managed just 3 points on 1 of 5 in Charlotte. Cleveland also flies to Atlanta tomorrow, which makes it hard for them to pour energy into chasing Trae for 48 minutes.
The 9.5-point spread brings some blowout risk. Trae still cleared this number while playing 34 minutes in Chicago. At close to even money, I want the guy who has averaged 11 assists.
- GARY'S PICKAJ DYBANTSAPOINTS UNDER 11.5
The market is pricing the name and the draft slot here. The setup tonight points the other way. Dybantsa sat the first four games with a left ankle sprain, and the team has confirmed he is on a minutes restriction for his first NBA regular season game. He is also stepping straight into a starting group with three established scorers. Trae, Davis and George have combined for roughly 63 points a game, and the offense already runs through them.
No player looks sharp the first time he plays in weeks, and this is his first real NBA game, on the road, against Mobley and Allen protecting the rim. Washington scores mostly in the paint and shoots threes poorly as a team, so the paint will be crowded when he drives. If Cleveland builds the kind of lead the spread suggests, Washington has every reason to protect a franchise rookie's ankle and sit him in the fourth quarter.
I expect flashes, a couple of strong drives and maybe a free throw trip or two. With a capped workload and three teammates who take shots ahead of him, single digits is a very realistic result. I'll take the under at a near even price.
