The read
The Spurs fly into Salt Lake City off a 27-point rout of Sacramento with no day off. They'll play at altitude against a Jazz team that just lost Jaren Jackson Jr. to an MCL tear and isn't sure Lauri Markkanen (right wrist) will play. On paper, the 14.5 makes sense. The season numbers put the gap near 15 before home court, rest and injuries are factored in, and those adjustments mostly cancel each other out. The edge is in how this game plays out.
Utah has already played this game. Monday against 4-0 Memphis, Markkanen played 6 minutes, Jackson 10 and Jaxson Hayes didn't suit up. It was the second night of a back-to-back. The Jazz shot 38-of-92, Darryn Peterson went 5-of-18 and Memphis hit 16 threes, yet Utah lost by only 5 and won the fourth quarter 29-21. Mo Bamba went 7-of-8 with four blocks. All three Jazz home games have finished within 9.
Covering 14.5 takes 48 minutes of focus, and San Antonio hasn't shown that once it gets ahead. Tuesday the Spurs led Sacramento by 26 at the half and then played the second half 50-49 with the bench carrying heavy minutes. That came with fresh legs. On a back-to-back at altitude, a 20-point third-quarter lead means Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox sit. That's the backdoor. Utah also creates extra chances: 25 or more free-throw attempts every game and 13.25 offensive rebounds a night.
The risk is real. Wembanyama had 29 on 14-of-21 with nine dunks Tuesday, and Utah now starts Kyle Filipowski at center. The Jazz shoot 32.6% from three, so if the rim is walled off they're in trouble. They also turn it over 16.75 times a game against a Spurs team averaging 23.25 fast-break points. That's how this becomes a 25-point game. San Antonio has also already won by 16 on a road back-to-back in Dallas.
Still, this is a 2-2 team laying a big number on tired legs at altitude, with a deep bench that likes to play out leads. I'll take the points.

The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
SAS won last season's series 2-1
2-1San Antonio won two of three against Utah last season, winning by 5.7 points per game on average. Three close games is a thin sample. Utah's injury list, starting with Jaren Jackson Jr., matters more tonight.
REPLACEMENT
Trey Alexander is OUT for UTA
OUTTrey Alexander is out for Utah while on a two-way G League assignment. He is outside the main rotation, so his absence barely moves this game.
Jayden Quaintance is OUT for SAS
OUTJayden Quaintance is out for San Antonio and has not been cleared for basketball activities. His absence is ongoing and has little effect on tonight's rotation.
Tobias Harris is OUT for SAS
OUTTobias Harris is out for San Antonio while he ramps up from a left calf strain. Combined with a back-to-back, San Antonio heads into Utah short on legs and on depth.
Jusuf Nurkic is OUT for UTA
OUTJusuf Nurkic is out for Utah with a plantar plate tear in his right foot. His absence costs Utah size inside, though Utah still has the rest edge over San Antonio.
Jaren Jackson Jr. is OUT for UTA
OUTJaren Jackson Jr. has a torn right MCL, so Utah will be without him for a long time. Lauri Markkanen and Jaxson Hayes are questionable too, so Utah's frontcourt against San Antonio could be very thin.
Kobe Bufkin is OUT for UTA
OUTKobe Bufkin is a two-way player in the G League. This has little effect on Utah against San Antonio.
Harrison Ingram is OUT for UTA
OUTHarrison Ingram is on a two-way assignment in the G League. This does not affect Utah's rotation tonight.
Lauri Markkanen is Questionable for UTA
QuestionableLauri Markkanen is questionable with a right wrist sprain. With Jaren Jackson Jr. out, his status is the main thing that decides how strong Utah is against San Antonio.
Jaxson Hayes is Questionable for UTA
QuestionableJaxson Hayes is questionable with right shoulder soreness. With Jackson out and Markkanen also questionable, Utah's frontcourt depth could get very thin.
SITUATIONAL
SAS on a back-to-back, UTA rested
B2B vs 2dSan Antonio is on the back end of a back-to-back, and Utah comes in with 2 days of rest. San Antonio is also without Tobias Harris and Jayden Quaintance, and Utah is missing Jusuf Nurkic and Trey Alexander. The schedule edge belongs to Utah at home. Look at whether the line moved enough to reflect a tired road team.

2- GARY'S PICKAIRIOUS BAILEYREBOUNDS OVER 5.5
This number was set for the version of Bailey who came off the bench in the opener. That player is gone. Since moving into the starting five he has pulled down 12 boards against the Lakers and 10 against Memphis, and the Utah frontcourt around him has only gotten thinner.
Jaren Jackson Jr. is out with the MCL tear, Nurkic is out, Hayes is nursing a sore shoulder and Markkanen's wrist is a real question mark. Hardy already showed his hand Monday by sliding Bailey onto bigger bodies like Boozer once the injuries piled up, so he is functionally playing the four with center duties on the glass.
Wembanyama will take his share, but the Spurs are on the second night of a back-to-back and a 14.5 point spread points toward a lot of misses coming off the rim from a Utah offense that has struggled to shoot. Even if this gets lopsided, Bailey is a young piece the Jazz want on the floor. Six rebounds is a modest ask for the guy who is now their primary forward.
- GARY'S PICKKEYONTE GEORGEPOINTS OVER 20.5
Utah just lost Jackson, who gave them 20 and 24 in two of the first three games, and Markkanen, who scored 28 against the Lakers, is battling a sprained wrist. Those shots have to go somewhere, and George is the one guy on this roster built to absorb them. When Jackson and Markkanen both left early against Memphis, he took 17 shots and finished with 26 without making a single three, which tells me he can get there on drives and free throws even on a cold night from deep.
Peterson is still finding his touch and Bailey is more of a finisher than a creator, so the ball lives in George's hands. San Antonio defends well on the perimeter with Castle and Fox, and that is the price you pay at -120, but they are playing their second game in two nights after flying in from a home win. Utah will be chasing this game from behind, and a trailing lead guard with this kind of usage tends to keep firing.
I like him clearing 21.
