The read

Scotiabank Arena hosts the first of two straight Magic-Raptors meetings tonight, and both teams are missing stars: no Kawhi Leonard for Toronto, no Paolo Banchero or Jalen Suggs for Orlando. Toronto is laying 4.5, and I'm laying it with them.

This game comes down to possessions, and Toronto wins that battle. The Raptors average 96.7 shot attempts a night and hold opponents to 80.3. Orlando takes 85.7 and allows 93.7. Toronto forces 24.7 turnovers per game and grabs 16.3 offensive rebounds. Orlando gives it away 17.3 times and allows 15 offensive boards. The Magic also foul 26 times a game. Even in the 23-point loss at Minnesota without Kawhi, Toronto won the shot count 91 to 77. Minnesota simply shot 55.8%.

Orlando's win at Madison Square Garden looks better than it was. The Magic hit 18 of 42 threes while New York hit 9 of 38. That's a 27-point swing in a 9-point game, and the Knicks still won the paint 52-32. Anthony Black and Tristan Da Silva went a combined 10 for 16 from deep, and I don't expect that to repeat.

The injuries hit Orlando right where Toronto attacks. Suggs started all three games and played at least 32 minutes in each. With Banchero and Jonathan Isaac out, Wendell Carter Jr. has little help on the glass. Minnesota grabbed 22 offensive rebounds against this team with Banchero playing. Black is listed available but missed shootaround for personal reasons. If he can't go, more of the ball goes to Jase Richardson, who is 5 of 15 from the field this season.

Minnesota is a common opponent, and it beat Orlando by 22 in Orlando and Toronto by 23 in Minnesota. Toronto's loss came on the road without Kawhi, while Orlando's came at home with Banchero and Suggs both playing.

The risk is that Toronto can't shoot. The Raptors are 27 of 103 from three, and Scottie Barnes has already had a 28-point game and a 0-for-12 night. If Orlando protects the ball, this stays tight. I don't think it will. Raptors -4.5.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • TOR won last season's series 2-1

    2-1

Toronto won two of three against Orlando last season, winning by 14.3 points per game on average. Three games is a small sample, and both teams are missing a key player tonight, Leonard for Toronto and Suggs for Orlando.

REPLACEMENT

  • Jonathan Isaac is OUT for ORL

    OUT

Jonathan Isaac is out for Orlando with a left knee issue. With Paolo Banchero, Noah Penda and Izaiyah Nelson also out, Orlando's forward depth is thin at Toronto.

  • Izaiyah Nelson is OUT for ORL

    OUT

Izaiyah Nelson is out for Orlando while recovering from a left ankle injury. He is a depth piece on a night Orlando is also without Paolo Banchero and Jonathan Isaac.

  • Noah Penda is OUT for ORL

    OUT

Noah Penda is out for Orlando with a partially torn right hamstring. Orlando is also without Paolo Banchero and Jonathan Isaac, so the forward rotation is short.

  • Nate Bittle is OUT for TOR

    OUT

Nate Bittle is out for Toronto with a right foot avulsion fracture. He is a depth big, and Toronto is otherwise in better shape than an Orlando team missing four players.

  • Kawhi Leonard is OUT for TOR

    OUT

Kawhi Leonard is out for Toronto against Orlando with swelling in his left knee, and earlier reporting said he was expected to miss time. Orlando is also missing Jalen Suggs, so both sides lose a key piece. Judge any line move by how much each absence matters to its own team.

  • Jalen Suggs is OUT for ORL

    OUT

Jalen Suggs is out in Toronto with a right knee bone bruise first reported Oct 26. Toronto is without Kawhi Leonard, so both teams are down a starter-level name. The absences partly cancel out when you think about the matchup.

  • Malachi Smith is OUT for TOR

    OUT

Malachi Smith is a two-way player in the G League. This does not affect Toronto's rotation tonight.

  • Paolo Banchero is OUT for ORL

    OUT

Paolo Banchero is out in Toronto with a low grade high ankle sprain, and Jalen Suggs is out too. High ankle sprains tend to last longer than regular ones, so Orlando's offense may run through other players for more than one night. Check whether the Orlando number has fully adjusted for both absences before you lean on last season's results.

  • Anthony Black is Questionable for ORL

    Questionable

Black is questionable for personal reasons and missed Wednesday's morning shootaround. Personal absences come with little public detail, so there is not much to judge his chances by. For Orlando at Toronto, hold off on Orlando guard props until his status is announced.

SITUATIONAL

  • Both sides on 3 days rest

    3d both

Orlando and Toronto both get 3 days rest, the longest break on tonight's board, and it is equal on both sides. Legs should be fresh at both ends, but rest gives neither team an edge.

    Orlando Magic

The book is pricing Carter like a role player who happened to get hot, and I think it is reading the Knicks game too heavily. He scored 22 against Atlanta and 20 against Minnesota on 16 of 19 shooting, and he stepped out and hit four threes across those two nights. The 9 in New York came on just six shots in a game where Orlando lived behind the arc and the bench guards took over.

Tonight his role should grow. With Banchero and Suggs out, Orlando has fewer creators and needs points from somewhere other than the perimeter. Carter is the most reliable finisher left in the frontcourt. He gets his looks on rolls, putbacks and pick and pop threes, and none of those depend on a star breaking the defense down first.

Toronto gives up real volume around the rim. Minnesota put 56 in the paint on them Sunday, and their pressure defense leaves gaps behind the rotation that a big who can catch and finish or step out will find. Poeltl is a solid positional center, but he only played 19 minutes last time out and Toronto goes small for long stretches with Murray Boyles and Graves.

Twelve points is a modest ask for a center who already cleared 20 twice and should see more of the ball tonight. Getting plus money on it is the reason I am in.
