The read

Two 1-3 teams meet at the United Center, and the Knicks walk in on the second night of a back-to-back, their third game in four nights, laying 7.5 on the road. Chicago had Tuesday off. That's the spot, and I'm taking the points.

The Knicks just haven't built margins. Their results read -6, -4, -9 and +14, on 104 points a game and 32.7% from three (48-147). Brunson is 30-82 from the field and 4-20 from deep. The one comfortable win came at home against a Detroit team missing Jalen Duren and Isaiah Joe, after trailing 25-38 after one. Now the starters come back after Brunson and Anunoby logged 36 minutes apiece, Towns 33 with 20 boards, and Bridges 32.

Chicago's two blowouts have a clear cause: 27 and 25 turnovers, turned into 35 and 39 points the other way. In their other two games they gave it away 14 and 12 times, won by 7 in Milwaukee and lost by 4 to Washington. The Knicks force 13.25 turnovers a game, never more than 16, and score 12 to 16 fast-break points a night. They don't play the way that buries this team.

The Bulls also live at the line, 34.5 attempts a game, against a Knicks team already committing 22 to 23 fouls a night before fatigue sets in. And Chicago's 23.8% from three on 42 attempts a game is bound to come up, which is good news for the side getting points.

The risk is real. Claxton is out, leaving Jalen Smith against Towns and Drummond, and Chicago gives up 14.25 offensive rebounds and 52.5 paint points a game. The Bulls allow 129.5 points a night. The common opponent stings too: the Knicks lost by 4 in Boston, the Bulls by 35. And if Chicago trails after three, Splitter has opened fourth quarters with Buzelis and Wilson alongside reserves for development rather than chasing the game.

So this is a lean, not a hammer. The question isn't whether Chicago is bad; the line already says so. It's whether a gassed Knicks offense can win by eight on the road, something it has done once in four tries, at home.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • NYK won last season's series 3-1

    3-1

New York beat Chicago three of four times last season, winning by 12 points per game on average. Patrick Williams is questionable for Chicago tonight. That series result is background, and tonight's injury report matters more.

REPLACEMENT

  • Nicolas Claxton is OUT for CHI

    OUT

Nicolas Claxton is out for Chicago with a left hamstring strain, though he has been doing individual work. His absence costs Chicago size and rim protection against a New York team on a back-to-back.

  • Tobe Awaka is Questionable for CHI

    Questionable

Awaka is dealing with a left ankle sprain, and the tag has carried over from Tuesday's report into game day, so there is no clear word yet either way. If he sits, Chicago's frontcourt minutes get spread among whoever is next in line. Check the final injury report close to tip before acting on any Bulls player prop that depends on his minutes.

  • Patrick Williams is Questionable for CHI

    Questionable

Patrick Williams is questionable with a right adductor strain, which is a groin injury. Check his status before betting Chicago against New York.

  • Jose Alvarado is Day-To-Day for NYK

    Day-To-Day

Jose Alvarado was out Tuesday against the Pistons, his second straight game missed with a sprained ankle. Day-to-day leaves his status open, so watch the report for the Chicago game.

SITUATIONAL

  • NYK on a back-to-back, CHI rested

    B2B vs 2d

New York is on the second night of a back-to-back, and Chicago has had 2 days of rest. That gap tends to show up in legs and shooting late in games. Chicago is without Nicolas Claxton, which takes some size off the floor. For bettors, the rest edge sits with the home team, and second-half or total markets are where fatigue usually shows.

    Karl-Anthony Towns
    Rebounds over 12.5

    -120 · CASHED · ACTUAL 13

    New York Knicks

Towns is cleaning the glass at a level this number doesn't respect. He has pulled down 12, 10, 14 and then 20 against Detroit, and he has three straight double-doubles going into a matchup that sets up even better for him. Chicago launches threes at a huge volume and misses most of them. They went 12 for 44, 12 for 45, 12 for 43 and 4 for 36 in their four games. Long misses off a bad shooting team create a steady supply of defensive boards, and Towns is the one collecting them for New York.

The Bulls also can't hold down their own paint. Nic Claxton is out, and Jalen Smith starts at center as a big who drifts to the perimeter, which pulls Chicago's best rebounder away from the rim on both ends. Boston grabbed 19 offensive rebounds against them on Monday and Toronto grabbed 16. This is a soft frontcourt with nobody who can box Towns out for 32 minutes.

The back-to-back is the concern, along with a possible lopsided fourth quarter with the Knicks laying 7.5. Rebounding holds up on tired legs better than shooting does, though, and Towns has been the one Knick who shows up every night. I'll lay the juice and take the over.

  • GARY'S PICK
    MIKAL BRIDGESPOINTS UNDER 12.5
    NBANew York Knicks· -118

    Mikal Bridges
    Points under 12.5

    -118 · CASHED · ACTUAL 3

    New York Knicks

This line is priced off the name and last season. His actual game logs read 4, 0, 6 and 12. The 12 came last night when he finally hit four threes after opening the year without a single make from deep. One warm shooting night doesn't fix his role. He's averaging 30 minutes and still averaging only 5.5 points, because the offense runs through Brunson, Towns and Anunoby, with Hart crashing everything in between.

The bench keeps eating into the leftover shots, too. McBride scored 20 in Boston, Shamet put up 13 against Detroit, and whoever gets hot off the pine gets the looks Bridges would otherwise take. Bridges also takes on the toughest perimeter assignment most nights. Tonight that likely means chasing Norman Powell around screens on the second night of a back-to-back, and that's the kind of night where a shooter's legs go first.

Even his best game of the season came in at 12, which is still under this number. If the Knicks pull away, his fourth-quarter minutes get trimmed as well. I like the under at a fair price.
