The read

The Lakers walk into Intuit Dome on the second night of a back-to-back, their third game in four nights, without Luka Doncic or Ziaire Williams. The Clippers have had two days off at home. At -1.5, all they have to do is win.

Doncic has been the Lakers' offense. He's averaging 36 points, has taken 91 of the team's 322 field-goal attempts and has 33 assists in four games. With Williams also out, about 64 minutes a night go to Collin Sexton, Quentin Grimes, Jake LaRavia, Sandro Mamukelashvili and Kevon Looney. Sexton is 7-of-17 in the two games with a box line, and Grimes is 9-of-19 with 3-of-11 from deep.

That leaves Austin Reaves to carry it. He's been terrific, scoring 26.5 points a night on 31-of-49 shooting. But he's logged 38, 36 and 39 minutes in the last three games and picked up five fouls twice. Now he plays the second night of a back-to-back with no other creator next to him.

The defense was already the Lakers' problem. They've given up 56, 48, 58 and 56 points in the paint, plus 20 offensive rebounds and 34 second-chance points at Utah. Redick and Kessler both called it out after Portland put up 136. Brook Lopez went 8-of-9 for 22 points off the bench against this team last week, and he stays in that role tonight.

Losing Rui Hachimura costs the Clippers little. He's shooting 10-of-38, and Kobe Sanders steps into the lineup.

The risk is ball security. The Clippers coughed it up 26 times in each of their last two games, and the Lakers turned that into 33 points in the first meeting. If they're careless again, a short-handed team can steal this one. But the Lakers won that meeting with Doncic and Reaves both on the floor. Tonight it's Reaves alone, on tired legs.

A rested home team is facing a worn-out road team missing its best player, and the line only asks the Clippers to win. Give me the Clippers -1.5.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • LAL and LAC split last season 2-2

    2-2

The Lakers and Clippers split four games last season, so neither team owned the matchup. Tonight is their first meeting this season, and last season's result says little about these rosters now. Price this game off how each team is playing now, not the series history.

REPLACEMENT

  • Bradley Beal is OUT for LAC

    OUT

The Clippers are without Bradley Beal because of a right knee issue. He is one of several scorers missing, which pushes more of the load onto Darius Garland.

  • Max Strus is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Max Strus is out for the Clippers with a partially torn right plantar fascia. With Bradley Beal and Brandon Ingram also out, the Clippers are short on shooting and wing depth.

  • Yanic Konan Niederhauser is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Yanic Konan Niederhauser is out for the Clippers after right Lisfranc surgery. His absence trims frontcourt depth on a night the Clippers are already missing several rotation players.

  • Brandon Ingram is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Brandon Ingram is out for the Clippers after right heel surgery and was not expected to be ready for the season's start. Along with Bradley Beal and Max Strus, the Clippers lose a lot of scoring.

  • Jordan Miller is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Jordan Miller is out for the Clippers after left rotator cuff surgery. He adds to a long Clippers injury list that cuts into their depth against the Lakers.

  • Cameron Carr is OUT for LAL

    OUT

Cameron Carr is out for the Lakers with an oblique issue after being recalled from the G League. He is a fringe rotation piece, so his absence matters little for tonight's line.

  • Adou Thiero is OUT for LAL

    OUT

Adou Thiero is out for the Lakers with swelling in his left knee. He is a depth piece, and the bigger story in this game is the Lakers playing on no rest.

  • Rui Hachimura is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Rui Hachimura misses the Lakers game with left quad soreness, and he was ruled out the day before. Soreness usually means a short absence, so this is a one-night rotation change for the Clippers more than a lasting one.

SITUATIONAL

  • LAL on a back-to-back, LAC rested

    B2B vs 3d

The Lakers are on no rest, and the Clippers have had 3 days off, the widest rest gap on tonight's board. The Clippers are thin, though, with Bradley Beal, Brandon Ingram, Max Strus, Jordan Miller and Yanic Konan Niederhauser all out. The Lakers are missing Cameron Carr and Adou Thiero. Rest favors the Clippers and health favors the Lakers, so it is worth checking which one the line leaned on.

    Los Angeles Lakers

This number was built for the bench version of Collin Sexton, and that version isn't playing tonight. Luka Doncic is out with back tightness and Ziaire Williams is out with the foot, so Sexton slides into the starting backcourt next to Austin Reaves. He's been getting somewhere between 14 and 20 minutes a night, and even in that role he put up 13 in 20 minutes at Utah. Give him starter minutes and the math changes in a hurry.

Think about where Luka's shots go. He took 22 shots against Portland and 30 in Utah. Reaves takes the biggest chunk of that, and the next guy in line is the one who has spent his whole career hunting his own shot. Sexton doesn't need plays drawn up for him. He gets downhill and he gets to the line, and the Lakers have been living at the stripe all season.

The back-to-back also helps him. He only played 14 minutes against Portland, so of all the Lakers guards he has the freshest legs tonight. Reaves logged 39 last night, and Redick will need someone else to carry the ball in stretches. The Clippers have given the ball away 26 times in each of their last two games. That means live-ball turnovers and open floor, which is where Sexton is at his best. At close to even money, I'll take the starter's role against a reserve's line.

    Los Angeles Lakers

Reaves has scored 23, 28, 29 and 26 this year, and he did all of that while sharing the ball with a guy who took 18 to 30 shots a night. Tonight Luka sits and the offense belongs to Reaves from the opening tip. He's been efficient enough with the ball he already gets, 8 for 13 against Portland, 7 for 12 in Utah, 10 for 13 against this same Clippers team. With a heavier load, a couple of extra makes and a few more trips to the line clear this number.

We saw this matchup five nights ago. He torched the Clippers for 28 on 13 shots, and their defense gave away 26 turnovers in that game. Kris Dunn and Derrick Jones Jr. can defend, I give them that, but they can't guard him for 40 minutes, and the Clippers frontcourt is thin with Rui Hachimura out. The Lakers have scored at least 125 in every game. The scoring has to come from somewhere, and Reaves is the obvious answer.

My one worry is his legs after 39 minutes last night on a back-to-back. The flip side is that Redick has nobody to turn to if Reaves sits, so his minutes will be there. A bigger role, a defense he's already beaten and a line priced near even. I'm on the over.
