The read
Houston comes into Fiserv Forum at 4-0, and Milwaukee is coming off its first win under Taylor Jenkins. On paper it looks like a mismatch. Look at who's missing for Houston, though, and 8.5 on the road starts to look like too much.
Alperen Sengun is out with low back soreness, and that hurts more than the record suggests. Sengun has averaged 24.5 points on 58% shooting, plus 9 rebounds and 7 assists. That makes Sengun the team's best passer and arguably its best player so far. Steven Adams and Marcus Smart are out too, which leaves Clint Capela as the only true center, and Capela has played just 8, 11 and 4 minutes. Jabari Smith Jr. likely slides to the five against Myles Turner and Kel'el Ware. Ware has posted 19 and 13, then 16 and 14, and Milwaukee grabbed 17 and 16 offensive rebounds in its last two games.
Houston's road wins came by 7 in Atlanta and 4 in San Antonio, and Sengun scored 17 and 29 in those games. The Rockets also give the ball away: 22, 16, 15 and 16 turnovers, and now their main playmaker is gone. Fred VanVleet is 8-of-25 from the field in three games.
There's backdoor value too. Against Atlanta on Monday, Houston pushed a 6-point lead after three quarters out to 22 with Kevin Durant resting, then won by 10. "Coaches are always looking to get me some extra minutes of rest," Durant said. If this one gets lopsided, the minutes get trimmed and the margin shrinks.
The risks are real. Milwaukee allowed 128, 132 and 127 before holding a short-handed Indiana team on a back-to-back to 102. The Bucks foul 26 times a game, and Houston averages nearly 28 free-throw attempts. Houston also won both Atlanta games without Smart and Adams.
Still, this number prices in the 4-0 start more than the injury report. I'll take the Bucks and the points, but it's a lean, not a hammer.

The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
HOU won last season's series 2-0
2-0Houston swept Milwaukee 2-0 last season, winning by 6.5 points per game on average. Two games is a very small sample. Tonight Houston is without Sengun and Adams, which matters more than last season's results.
REPLACEMENT
Steven Adams is OUT for HOU
OUTSteven Adams misses the Milwaukee game with a right soleus strain. Houston is also without Alperen Sengun, and Marcus Smart is questionable, so the Rockets are thin. Price this game with both absences together instead of looking at them one at a time.
Quadir Copeland is OUT for HOU
OUTQuadir Copeland is in the G League on a two-way deal. This has little impact on Houston in Milwaukee.
Julian Phillips is OUT for HOU
OUTJulian Phillips is on a two-way assignment in the G League. This does not affect Houston's rotation tonight.
Alperen Sengun is OUT for HOU
OUTAlperen Sengun is out with low back soreness. Steven Adams is also out and Marcus Smart is questionable, so Houston comes into Milwaukee short on frontcourt players. Back soreness can linger, so check his status again before the next game.
Marcus Smart is Questionable for HOU
QuestionableMarcus Smart is questionable with a left forearm strain. With Sengun and Adams out, losing Smart too would leave Houston very thin in Milwaukee.
SITUATIONAL
Both sides on 2 days rest
2d bothHouston and Milwaukee both arrive on 2 days rest. Neither side is tired or rested relative to the other, so fatigue is not a factor here.
STREAK
HOU has won 4 straight
W4Houston is 4-0 and has won by 9.8 points a game. Over four games, winning comfortably every night is a good start. The sheet doesn't list the opponents, so the size of that margin is the part most likely to shrink. On the road in Milwaukee, Houston's early form points the right way, but four games don't settle how good this team is.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKAMEN THOMPSONREBOUNDS OVER 8.5
Houston walks into Fiserv Forum without Alperen Sengun, Steven Adams or Marcus Smart. That takes the two guys who do the heavy lifting on the glass right out of the building. What's left up front is Jabari Smith Jr. sliding to center, Tari Eason, and Clint Capela, who has played single-digit minutes all year. Somebody has to clean up the misses, and the guard built like a forward who already does it is Amen Thompson.
He went for 10, 10 and 11 in his first three games while playing 33 to 39 minutes, and that was with Sengun eating boards next to him. The lone dud was 5 on Monday in 27 minutes, in a game Houston pulled away from Atlanta and he sat late. Tonight his minutes should climb back into the mid-30s because the depth chart is so thin.
Milwaukee gives him plenty of chances. The Bucks are putting up 90-plus shots a night and missing a lot of them, with 13 of 44 from three on Monday and 11 of 34 in Philadelphia. Long misses off threes are exactly what Thompson runs down before he starts the break. At plus money with the frontcourt this short, I'll take the over.
- GARY'S PICKKEVIN DURANTPOINTS OVER 25.5
Sengun has been Houston's leading scorer at 24.5 a night on about 15 shots. Those touches have to go somewhere, and the first place they land is Kevin Durant. He's averaging 23.5 points on roughly 13 or 14 field goal attempts. That's an absurdly efficient clip that leaves him a lot of room to grow when the volume goes up.
The matchup helps. Before Monday, Milwaukee had given up 128, 132 and 127. The win over Indiana came against a Pacers team on the second night of a back-to-back and missing Nembhard. Nobody in that Bucks rotation can bother a 7-footer shooting over the top. Jaquez and Kuzma can't, and Herro and Rollins certainly can't.
The risk is the bench. Houston rested Durant late Monday while the lead ballooned, and they are laying 8.5 here. Without Sengun, though, this team has less margin to build a big cushion. That should keep Durant on the floor deeper into the fourth. More shots, a soft defense and a game that should stay tighter than the number suggests all push me to the over.
