The read
The Pistons played at Madison Square Garden last night, and tonight they host Charlotte in their third game in four nights. Both teams are 3-1, and Detroit has to win by 8 or more on tired legs against a Hornets team that had Tuesday off.
The matchup favors Charlotte. The Hornets win on second chances, averaging 16 offensive rebounds a game, and Diabaté alone grabbed 11 against Washington. Detroit is without Jalen Duren, and its glass has suffered. Miami pulled down 18 offensive boards with Duren limited to 10 minutes. The Knicks took 19 last night with Duren out and turned them into 25 second-chance points. Paul Reed has been productive, scoring 22 on 9-of-12 shooting at New York. Even so, Reed and Collins on the second night of a back-to-back against a team built to crash is a hard assignment.
Detroit's wings are thin too. Isaiah Joe is out. Ausar Thompson came back for 25 minutes last night, and Bickerstaff said Thompson's workload would be monitored across consecutive nights. Cunningham played 36 minutes at the Garden. Detroit's 13-point win in Philadelphia came with the rest edge on its side. Tonight Charlotte has that edge.
Charlotte's injuries don't change the read. Knueppel, White and Williams haven't played all season, so the 3-1 record was built without them.
There are good reasons to keep the stake modest. Charlotte's three wins came against teams now a combined 2-10, by 7, 5 and 7 points, and the Hornets lost to Atlanta by 47. Detroit won at Miami by 17, while Charlotte beat the Heat at home by only 5. The Hornets are shooting 29.8% from three on heavy volume and turned it over 21 and 27 times in two of their four games. If Detroit's tired legs still turn those mistakes into easy points, the rest advantage disappears.
Still, 7.5 is a lot to lay with a short-handed team on a back-to-back. Lineups weren't confirmed before tip, and if Cunningham sits, this gets even better. Take the Hornets and the hook.

The research

HEAD-TO-HEAD
DET won last season's series 3-0
3-0Detroit beat Charlotte all three times last season, winning by 16.7 points per game on average. Three games is a small sample, and that was last season's roster. Detroit is without Jalen Duren tonight, so the margin from last season may not hold.
REPLACEMENT
Kon Knueppel is OUT for CHA
OUTKon Knueppel is out for Charlotte with a left hamstring strain and has no timetable. That is one of three Charlotte absences tonight, alongside Coby White and Grant Williams, which leaves the rotation short against Detroit.
Jalen Duren is OUT for DET
OUTDetroit plays Charlotte without Jalen Duren, who has a right hamstring strain and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. This is a multi-week absence, so expect his minutes to be spread around for several games. Bettors should watch how Detroit fills his role tonight, because that rotation will likely repeat over the next stretch.
Kylan Boswell is OUT for CHA
OUTKylan Boswell is a two-way player in the G League, and he has been out since the season opener with a knee issue. This has little effect on Charlotte's main rotation.
Coby White is OUT for CHA
OUTCoby White is out for Charlotte with a left calf strain. With Kon Knueppel and Grant Williams also out, Charlotte's guard and wing minutes shrink, and Brandon Miller is the obvious candidate to carry more of the scoring.
Grant Williams is OUT for CHA
OUTGrant Williams is out for Charlotte with a right hamstring strain and is set to be re-evaluated. He joins Coby White and Kon Knueppel on the sideline, so Charlotte goes into Detroit thin.
Michael Ajayi is OUT for CHA
OUTMichael Ajayi is on a two-way deal and in the G League. This has little impact on Charlotte in Detroit.
Isaiah Joe is Day-To-Day for DET
Day-To-DayIsaiah Joe missed the front end of a back-to-back with a right hip issue. Day-to-day means he could return soon, so check his status before tipoff.
SITUATIONAL
DET on a back-to-back, CHA rested
B2B vs 2dDetroit is playing its second game in two nights, while Charlotte has had 2 days off. Tired home teams can fade late, especially on defense. Charlotte is short-handed, though, with Coby White, Kon Knueppel and Grant Williams all out. The rest edge and the injury edge point in opposite directions, so weigh both when looking at the spread.

2- GARY'S PICKPAUL REEDREBOUNDS OVER 8.5
With Jalen Duren out, the middle belongs to Reed, and the boards have followed: 11 at Miami, 8 at Philadelphia and 9 at New York since moving into the starting role. The 6 rebound game came off the bench in 16 minutes while Duren was still healthy, so that number tells you little about tonight. Charlotte is a volume shooting team that misses a lot.
The Hornets have put up close to 90 shots a night and their three point shooting has been cold outside the Miami game, which means a steady stream of long caroms for Detroit's center to clean up. Diabate will crash the offensive glass hard, and that is part of the appeal: Reed will be the one boxing him out and chasing everything that comes off the rim. The back-to-back is the only worry, but Detroit is thin up front with Collins as the only other real big, so Reed's minutes should hold in the mid twenties.
Getting plus money on a starting center's rebounds against a team that misses this often is a price I will take.
- GARY'S PICKBRANDON MILLERPOINTS OVER 23.5
Charlotte is without Kon Knueppel and Coby White, and that leaves Miller as the offense. The shot volume shows it: 28 attempts against Washington and 29 against Miami, with 39 and 34 points to show for it. The six point night against Atlanta came in a 47 point blowout where Miller played only 22 minutes, and that is the one script I would worry about.
I do not expect it here, because Charlotte stayed competitive in its other three games and the team is rested while Detroit plays its third game in four nights after a physical loss at the Garden. Ausar Thompson is the defender who could slow Miller down, but the ankle is still being managed and Bickerstaff has already talked about watching those minutes on the back-to-back. When Thompson sits, Detroit has few good options for a big wing with this kind of shooting range.
Miller also gets to the line, and with this many shots there are several ways to clear the number. At even money I will back the player taking every big shot for a short-handed team.
