The read
An 0-3 Kings team rolls into Frost Bank Center on one day of rest, and the market wants the 1-2 Spurs to win by 19. That's a lot to ask of a team that hasn't done it yet.
San Antonio's best night was a 16-point win at Dallas. That Mavs team was missing Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving and coughed up 21 turnovers. Across three games the Spurs have scored 112.0 and allowed 112.0 a night, a net of zero. The shooting doesn't scream blowout either: they're 37-of-116 from three (31.9%) while taking 37 to 42 a game. Covering 18.5 probably takes a hot night from deep, not just the better roster.
The bigger factor is the calendar. Tonight opens the Spurs' second back-to-back. If this is a 20-point game in the third quarter, Mitch Johnson has every reason to sit Wembanyama, Fox and Castle and hand it to Kornet, Bryant, Reed and Barnes. That's exactly where big spreads leak.
Sacramento can score into that window. Zach LaVine has put up 28, 22 and 37 on 29-of-59 shooting. Domantas Sabonis is 21-of-26 from the field with 18, 19 and 15 rebounds. Two of the Kings' three losses were close: 8 to Portland and 11 to a 4-0 Memphis team.
The Kings aren't good. They've allowed 124.0 a game, and a Clippers team without Bradley Beal, Brandon Ingram and Max Strus beat them by 25. Opponents have made 43 threes to Sacramento's 26, and Darius Acuff Jr. is 4-of-27 from deep. With Keegan Murray, Dylan Cardwell and Maxime Raynaud out, only Precious Achiuwa and Jonathan Mogbo back up Sabonis against Wembanyama. Memphis just grabbed 18 offensive rebounds against them.
On raw margins this line is fair. Sacramento is minus 14.7 a game and San Antonio is even, a 14.7-point gap before home court. My edge isn't about who's better. It's that the Spurs starters will likely sit before a 19-point lead is safe. Kings +18.5 at -105, small stake.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
SAS won last season's series 3-0
3-0San Antonio swept Sacramento 3-0 last season and won by 19.3 a game. Tonight is the first meeting this season. Last season's results are a reference point, and tonight's injury report matters more than an old sweep.
REPLACEMENT
Keegan Murray is OUT for SAC
OUTKeegan Murray is out for Sacramento and will be re-evaluated in 10-to-14 days. He's a starting forward, and on a team already short on bodies, more of the load falls on whoever is healthy, including LaVine.
Jayden Quaintance is OUT for SAS
OUTJayden Quaintance is out for San Antonio, still recovering from knee surgery. He hasn't been part of the rotation, so tonight's lineup shouldn't look any different without him.
Ben Simmons is OUT for SAC
OUTBen Simmons is out for Sacramento after Achilles surgery. It's a long-term absence the team has already planned around, so don't expect a fresh shift in roles tonight.
Tobias Harris is OUT for SAS
OUTTobias Harris is out for San Antonio with a left calf strain. That's a veteran forward's minutes to fill, so check who starts in his place before looking at frontcourt player lines.
Dylan Cardwell is OUT for SAC
OUTDylan Cardwell is out for Sacramento with a left calf strain and will be re-evaluated in one week. It thins the frontcourt a little more on a team already missing several players tonight.
Maxime Raynaud is OUT for SAC
OUTMaxime Raynaud is out for Sacramento with a right kneecap subluxation. Reports say he is progressing, but tonight's frontcourt minutes will go elsewhere.
Sean Pedulla is OUT for SAC
OUTSean Pedulla, a two-way player, is out for Sacramento. Minor on its own, but it adds to a long injury list.
SITUATIONAL
SAS on 3d, SAC on 2d
3d vs 2dSan Antonio has 3 days of rest and Sacramento has 2. Both teams are fresh, so the schedule offers no real edge.
STREAK
SAC has lost 3 straight
L3Sacramento is 0-3 and losing by 14.7 a game, the widest losing margin on tonight's board. Their injury list is long tonight, with Murray, Simmons, Cardwell and Raynaud all out. A depleted roster helps explain the margins, so the slide may hold as long as those players stay out.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKVICTOR WEMBANYAMAPOINTS UNDER 26.5
This number is set for a superstar who carries the scoring load every night, and that isn't how this Spurs team is built right now. Harper has scored 18, 20 and 22 in his first three games, Castle has been between 15 and 24, and Fox keeps putting up 19. That's a lot of shots going to guards before Wemby touches the ball. He's topped out at 25 so far, and the 12 point opener shows how low his floor can go when the jumper isn't falling.
The game script helps too. San Antonio is laying 18.5 against a Kings team that has given up 121, 128 and 123 in three straight losses. If this goes the way the spread says, Wemby is on the bench for a big chunk of the fourth quarter. He only played 29 minutes in the comfortable win at Dallas. Tonight is also the first night of a back-to-back, so Mitch Johnson has every reason to protect his franchise player once the margin is safe. Sabonis has no answer for him in the post, which is the one risk here, but even an efficient night in 28 minutes probably lands in the low twenties. I'll take the under at a fair price.
- GARY'S PICKDE'AARON FOXASSISTS OVER 6.5
Fox has set up teammates as well as anyone in this backcourt. He has 9, 9 and 7 assists so far, and he did it in modest minutes, including only 28 in the Dallas win when he still handed out nine. With Castle and Harper both looking to score, Fox has settled into the role of the guard who organizes the offense and gets the ball to Wembanyama, and that role produces assists whether he plays 28 minutes or 34.
The opponent matters here. Sacramento's defense has been leaking points, with opponents scoring over 120 a night, and teams that give up that many baskets give up plenty of assists along with them. The Kings are also short on size with Murray, Raynaud and Cardwell all out, so Fox should have easy lanes to drive and kick or to find Wemby rolling to the rim. He's facing his old team, which usually means he's dialed in early, and early is when this game should be decided. Getting plus money on a line he has cleared every night this season is a price I'll take.
