The read
Madison Square Garden, Tuesday night: the 0-3 Knicks host a 3-0 Pistons team, and the book still has New York laying 4.5. The market is saying three games of results don't make a rating. When you open those games up, I agree.
New York lost by 6, 4 and 9. They've been outscored 62-42 off turnovers, which accounts for the entire 19-point deficit. They've also made 36 threes to their opponents' 44, a 24-point gap. Mikal Bridges is 5-for-23 from the floor and 0-for-10 from deep, and Jalen Brunson is 4-for-15 from three. Those are slumps. The real part is Karl-Anthony Towns going 23-for-37 with 36 rebounds, and a Knicks team winning the offensive glass 38-26 with a 58-35 edge in second-chance points.
Detroit's start has had help. The Pistons are shooting 42.0% from three, Duncan Robinson is 15-for-28, and opponents are hitting just 32.5% against them. Miami went 15-for-51. Philadelphia went 7-for-27 without Joel Embiid and VJ Edgecombe. Meanwhile Detroit has 54 turnovers and has given up 64 points off them while scoring 39. Cade Cunningham alone has 16. Hot shooting has covered that up.
The matchup leans New York. Jalen Duren is out, leaving Paul Reed and John Collins against Towns. Even without Embiid, Philly put 52 in the paint on Detroit Sunday. Ausar Thompson, Detroit's best defensive wing when healthy, is questionable with an ankle sprain. Isaiah Joe is also questionable after leaving Sunday early. And it's Detroit's third road game in five days.
The risks are real. The Knicks led Orlando 75-71 after three and lost the fourth 40-27. They're -20 in third quarters, and the bench is still unsettled. Cunningham has 8 assists in every game and can keep this close on his own. Detroit also already won by 13 in Philly without Duren or Thompson.
Still, I'll take the Knicks to finally get one, and get it by five or more.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
DET won last season's series 3-0
3-0Detroit swept the Knicks 3-0 last season and won by 28 a game, which was a lopsided series. Tonight is the first meeting this season, and both rosters and form have changed since. Last year's margins are background. This season's games are better evidence for pricing tonight.
REPLACEMENT
Jalen Duren is OUT for DET
OUTJalen Duren is out for Detroit with a right hamstring strain and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. Losing the starting center affects rebounding and rim protection, so look at who takes the center minutes and how the Knicks attack the paint.
Jose Alvarado is OUT for NYK
OUTJose Alvarado is out for the Knicks with a left ankle sprain. That takes away a backup guard, which can push more minutes and ball-handling onto the starters.
Ugonna Onyenso is OUT for DET
OUTUgonna Onyenso, a two-way player, won't play for Detroit. With Duren also out, Detroit is thinner at center.
Isaac Jones is Questionable for DET
QuestionableIsaac Jones, a two-way player, is questionable for Detroit. With Duren out, he could get some minutes at center if he plays.
Elijah Harkless is Questionable for DET
QuestionableElijah Harkless, a two-way player, is questionable for Detroit. Little rotation impact either way.
Isaiah Joe is Questionable for DET
QuestionableIsaiah Joe is questionable for Detroit with a right hip contusion. He gives them spacing off the bench, so watch his status if you're looking at Detroit's three-point output.
Ausar Thompson is Questionable for DET
QuestionableAusar Thompson is questionable for Detroit with a right ankle sprain. He's a key defender on the wing, so his status affects how well Detroit can guard Brunson. Check before tip.
SITUATIONAL
Both sides on 2 days rest
2d bothBoth teams come in on 2 days of rest, so the schedule gives neither side an edge tonight.
STREAK
NYK has lost 3 straight
L3The Knicks are 0-3, losing by 6.3 a game. That's a modest margin, closer to tight losses than blowouts. Three games is a small sample for a team with Brunson, and the margins suggest a team on the edge of winning these more than one getting run off the floor.
DET has won 3 straight
W3Detroit is 3-0 and winning by 12.7 a game, so the wins have been comfortable. Three games is early, but blowout margins carry more weight than a few close escapes. They play tonight without Jalen Duren, which tests whether that margin holds with a thinner frontcourt.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKDUNCAN ROBINSONPOINTS OVER 11.5
This number is priced for a role player, and Robinson has been Detroit's second scorer every night. He has put up 21, 17 and 21 with five threes in each game. He starts, he plays close to thirty minutes, and Cunningham keeps finding him because the drive and kick is how this offense works.
Four made threes clear the line by themselves, before any free throws or a cut to the rim. His minutes look safe too. Isaiah Joe is questionable after leaving the Philadelphia game early, and Ausar Thompson's ankle is still uncertain, so Detroit has less wing depth to take his shots.
The Knicks just let Orlando hit 18 threes at the Garden, and Mike Brown is still publicly asking this group to compete harder on defense. New York can put Bridges or Hart on him and make him work, but that would mean they leave Cunningham with an easier matchup. I'll lay the juice on a shooter who is getting good looks and has a low line to clear.
- GARY'S PICKJALEN BRUNSONASSISTS UNDER 5.5
Brunson has finished with 4, 4 and 3 assists, and I'm getting plus money that he stays under six. The Knicks are 0-3 and he is trying to win games by himself. He took 28 shots against Orlando, and when the possession matters the ball stays in his hands until he shoots it. His assists also need teammates who are hitting shots, and that hasn't been happening.
Bridges has gone 0 for 8, 2 for 8 and 3 for 7, and New York shot 9 for 38 from deep on Sunday. The rest of the playmaking is spread around. Kolek handed out nine assists in fifteen minutes off the bench, Hart brings the ball up often, and Anunoby had an eight assist game in Boston. Detroit is a long, active defense that has held its last two opponents to poor shooting from three.
Brunson did say everything falls on him and that he wants to organize the offense better, so he could make a point of passing more tonight. Even so, his habits this season point to him shooting, so I'll take the under at this price.
