The read
The winless Nets walk into TD Garden tonight against a Celtics team that just hung 134 on Chicago, and the books want Boston by 12.5. I expect Boston to win. I just don't trust them to win by that much.
Boston has won by more than 12.5 once in three games, and that came against a 1-3 Bulls team missing Nic Claxton and Patrick Williams that turned it over 25 times. Take that 35-point win out and the Celtics are minus-4 combined against Detroit and New York. They also give leads back: up 13 at halftime in Detroit, they lost by 8, and their fourth quarters read minus-14, minus-6, plus-5.
This is also Boston's second night of a back-to-back. The Celtics stay home and the starters played light Monday, so fatigue isn't the story. Minutes are. If Boston is up big after three, Tatum, George and company sit, and that's how a 12.5 gets beaten late.
Brooklyn's 27-point loss to Indiana came on the second night of its own back-to-back, with Julius Randle playing 24 minutes and Michael Porter Jr. 21. On normal rest, the Nets lost by 7 and by 4. They keep scoring late, too: 41 in the fourth at Cleveland after trailing by 16, plus 25, 27 and 37 free-throw attempts in their three games. And they force turnovers, 21 and 23 in their first two games, against a Boston team that gave it away 25 times Monday. Six of those were Derrick White's, and White is probable tonight with right hip synovitis.
This isn't a big play. Brooklyn allows 123.7 points a game on 50.6% shooting, and Boston is hitting 42.4% from three against a defense allowing 40.3%. The Nets also lost at home to a short-handed Charlotte, and if they turn it over 22 times like they did that night, this gets away early. Blending both teams' scoring puts Boston around 11.5 before any home edge, so the number is close.
Still, a team that hasn't shown it can protect a lead has to win by 13 on a back-to-back where the starters will rest in a blowout. I'll take the points.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
BOS won last season's series 3-1
3-1Boston won last season's series 3-1 and won by 11.8 a game across 4 meetings. Tonight is the first meeting this season. It's background context, and tonight's back-to-back for Boston is the more current factor.
REPLACEMENT
Devin Carter is OUT for BOS
OUTDevin Carter is out for Boston with mononucleosis and has no timetable for a return. That's a backcourt body gone for an unknown stretch, which matters more on a back-to-back when depth gets tested.
Tyler Bilodeau is OUT for BKN
OUTTyler Bilodeau, a two-way player dealing with a shoulder injury, is out for Brooklyn. He's at the end of the bench, so the rotation shouldn't change much.
Joshua Jefferson is OUT for BKN
OUTJoshua Jefferson is on G League assignment and won't play for Brooklyn. No rotation impact.
Grant Nelson is OUT for BKN
OUTGrant Nelson is a two-way player and is out for Brooklyn. No meaningful rotation impact.
Drake Powell is OUT for BKN
OUTDrake Powell is on G League assignment and won't play for Brooklyn. That's a young wing out of the mix, but this is a development move, not an injury.
Ben Saraf is OUT for BKN
OUTBen Saraf is on G League assignment and is out for Brooklyn. Little effect on the rotation.
SITUATIONAL
BOS on a back-to-back, BKN rested
B2B vs 2dBoston plays on no rest tonight while Brooklyn has had 2 days off. Tired legs on the second night of a back-to-back tend to show up late in games and in shooting. Factor the schedule into how much you trust Boston's starters for a full night.
STREAK
BKN has lost 3 straight
L3Brooklyn is 0-3 and losing by 12.7 a game, so these losses haven't been close. Three games is a short run, but the margin says the gap has been real. They do get a Boston team on no rest tonight, which is the kind of spot where a lopsided start can tighten up.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKDERRICK WHITEPOINTS UNDER 14.5
Everything about tonight pushes White's scoring down. He's on the injury report with right hip synovitis, it's the second night of a back-to-back, and Boston is laying twelve and a half to an 0-3 team that just got run off its own floor by Indiana. If this goes the way the number says, there's no reason to keep a guard with a sore hip on the floor in the fourth quarter. We saw that Monday: in an easy win over Chicago he played 18 minutes and scored 5.
He also hasn't been the guy getting the shots. Tatum and George take the first looks, and Pritchard is hot again off a 28-point night against Chicago. White's job in this lineup has been running the offense and defending, and his scoring has come in under this number in two of his three games. He'd need a big shooting night in limited minutes to beat 14.5. Close to even money on the under is a price I'll take.
- GARY'S PICKJAYSON TATUMPOINTS REBOUNDS ASSISTS UNDER 41.5
Tatum is playing tonight, and Boston made a point of saying it isn't resting him on the back-to-back. Playing is one thing, though. Heavy minutes are another. Monday was the preview: against a weak Chicago team at home, he played under 28 minutes and finished at 36 combined points, rebounds and assists. Brooklyn lost to Indiana by 27 two nights ago, gives up a lot of easy offense, and comes in on its third game in four nights. If Boston is up 20 after three quarters, Tatum sits and this line gets stranded.
The only time he's cleared this number was the close game with New York, when he played nearly 37 minutes and scored 36. A spread this size doesn't set up that kind of night. With Pritchard hot and George, Hauser and González all producing, Boston can spread the offense around and still win comfortably. I like the under at this price.
