The read
Two 2-1 teams meet at Spectrum Center tonight, both coming off a Friday-Saturday back-to-back with Sunday off. Charlotte closes its homestand, and Washington continues the road trip that started in Chicago. The Hornets are laying 2.5, and I'm taking the Wizards.
The schedule is a wash. Both teams are playing their third game in four nights, and this number already prices in Charlotte's home floor. The injury lists are mostly baked in too. Knueppel, White and Williams haven't played for Charlotte, and Dybantsa, Vukcevic and Watkins haven't played for Washington, so the three games each team has played show the rosters taking the floor tonight. The one new name is Naz Reid, listed probable with an illness this morning. Reid has been Charlotte's steadiest player (20, 17, 23), and anything short of a full night thins the Hornets' frontcourt against Anthony Davis, Alex Sarr and Deandre Ayton.
The real case is how these teams score. Washington lives at the rim and the line: 41, 35 and 28 free-throw attempts, plus 70 points in the paint against Milwaukee. Charlotte, without Knueppel and White, has leaned on volume threes: 48, 51 and 43 attempts, with 15, 11 and 16 makes. Brandon Miller has gone 7-21, 2-14 and 10-29 from the field. Nobody is due anything. But one offense rests on a shot that swings night to night, and the other rests on something that holds up. Charlotte has also turned it over 20, 25 and 16 times, and Trae Young is built to make them pay for that.
The results line up. Charlotte's wins came against two 0-3 teams: 110-103 in Brooklyn, and 115-110 over Miami after leading 92-70. In between came a 47-point home loss to Atlanta. Washington beat Milwaukee 128-116 and won 124-120 in Chicago. At 2.5 this is close to a who-wins question, and I trust the Young-Davis side to win it.
What beats me: - Charlotte's offensive glass: 19 and 15 offensive boards in two games, and Washington allowed 19 to Toronto. - Davis's cold stretch: 3-12 and 8-21 the last two games. - Washington's own shaky three-point shooting: 6-28, 12-37 and 10-33. - A Miami-style 16-43 night from deep, with Reid healthy and Grayson Allen hot.
This is a lean, not a hammer.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
CHA won last season's series 4-0
4-0Charlotte swept Washington 4-0 last season and won by 16 a game, which is about as one-sided as a series gets. Tonight is the first meeting this season. Four games is a small series, and a margin that wide can shift with new rosters. It tells you how these teams matched up last year, so weigh it against who is actually available for each side tonight.
REPLACEMENT
Jamir Watkins is OUT for WAS
OUTJamir Watkins is out for Washington as he recovers from left ACL surgery, a long-term absence that is already part of how Washington plays.
Tristan Vukcevic is OUT for WAS
OUTTristan Vukcevic is out for Washington with a left hip impingement. Washington is also without AJ Dybantsa and Jamir Watkins, so the depth behind Anthony Davis is thin at Charlotte.
Kon Knueppel is OUT for CHA
OUTKon Knueppel is out for Charlotte with a left hamstring strain. Coby White and Grant Williams are out too, so Brandon Miller should see a heavy load against Washington.
Grant Williams is OUT for CHA
OUTGrant Williams is out for Charlotte with a right hamstring strain, one of three Charlotte players missing tonight with Coby White and Kon Knueppel. Bench depth is the concern for Charlotte against Washington.
Coby White is OUT for CHA
OUTCoby White is out for Charlotte with a left calf strain. Losing a ballhandler pushes more shots and usage toward the remaining guards and wings. Check who absorbs that role tonight.
AJ Dybantsa is OUT for WAS
OUTAJ Dybantsa is out for Washington with a left ankle sprain. That takes a major piece out of the lineup and pushes more shots to others. Check who picks up the usage, since that is where the value shifts tonight.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKBRANDON MILLERPOINTS UNDER 24.5
This line is built off one big night. Miller scored 34 on Saturday, and it took 29 shots and 36 minutes against a Miami team that is still looking for its first win. His other two games went 6 points on 2-14 and 18 points on 7-21. Across three games he is 19-64 from the field, and he is averaging a little over 19 points. I'm laying -112 on the under at 24.5.
Most of his points come from jumpers. Charlotte barely gets to the line, with 25, 12 and 15 free-throw attempts as a team, so Miller doesn't have an easy way to add points when his shot is off. To clear 24.5 he needs heavy volume and a good shooting night in the same game. That's a tough combination against Washington's wings. Bilal Coulibaly is built for this assignment, and Kyshawn George brings length on the back line. He had four blocks in Chicago.
Miller also has more company than the injury list suggests. Naz Reid has scored 20, 17 and 23. Grayson Allen has put up 20 or more off the bench twice. Dennis Schroder scored 25 on Saturday. Charlotte has three other players who can take shots in a close game, and a close game is what I expect at 2.5.
What beats me: - Reid's illness takes him off the floor early and pushes his shots to Miller. - With Knueppel and White out, Miller takes 25 or more shots again and hits enough of them. - A hot shooting night from deep, where four or five threes do most of the work. - Overtime.
- GARY'S PICKTRAE YOUNGASSISTS OVER 9.5
Young has 13, 12 and 9 assists in his first three Washington games, playing between 34 and 38 minutes, and the whole offense runs through him. I'm paying -134 for the over at 9.5. The price is steep, but this matchup fits what he does.
Washington plays at the rim. Against Milwaukee they scored 70 points in the paint, and they keep getting to the line. Young has finishers to find: Anthony Davis on the pick and roll, Alex Sarr and Deandre Ayton as lob targets, and George and Champagnie cutting. Charlotte's frontcourt is Moussa Diabate, Reid playing through an illness, and Ryan Kalkbrenner off the bench. A thin front line protecting the paint gives Young the dump-offs and lobs that make up most of his assists.
Charlotte also gives the ball away: 20, 25 and 16 turnovers in three games. Those turn into Washington runouts with Young pushing the ball, and transition is where his easiest assists come. With the spread at 2.5 his minutes should be safe, and Washington doesn't have another creator who takes the ball from him.
The 9 assists in Chicago are the floor I'm watching. That came on a night when Washington went 10-33 from three, and the shooting around him is the real risk. Washington has gone 6-28, 12-37 and 10-33 from deep, so his kickouts haven't been producing many assists.
What beats me: - Another cold shooting night from the Washington wings. - Davis or Champagnie scoring off offensive rebounds instead of off Young's passes. - Young looking for his own shot, the way he did with 25 in Chicago. - A lopsided game in either direction that cuts his fourth-quarter minutes. - The juice: -134 doesn't leave much room for error.
