The read
Minnesota rolls into Rocket Arena at 3-0, on the second night of a back-to-back and playing its third game in four nights. Cleveland has had a day off to think about two straight late fades. The Cavaliers are laying 4.5 at home, and I'm taking the points.
The schedule is already in this number. Everyone knew the Wolves would be on tired legs when this line opened, so it isn't a new edge for Cleveland. The fatigue is also lighter than it sounds. Three blowouts kept Minnesota's starters on short minutes last night: Edwards about 28, Ball 17, Gobert 31. Dosunmu, Shannon, Lyles, Beringer and Hyland have all played real minutes.
The edges that carry over are about possessions. Minnesota has won the boards by at least 15 in every game, with 22 offensive rebounds at Orlando and 17 at Miami. Cleveland just gave up 18 offensive boards to Brooklyn with Allen and Mobley both on the floor. The Cavs have also turned it over 21 and 23 times, and both fades ran through turnovers: eight in the third quarter at Philadelphia and eight in the fourth against Brooklyn. Minnesota has forced 18, 16 and 16.
I'm not buying the Wolves as a 20-point juggernaut. Opponents shot 10-38, 8-39 and 8-33 from three. Miami is 0-3, Orlando was missing Black, Isaac, Nelson and Penda, and Toronto played without Leonard. Cut those margins down hard. But Minnesota doesn't need to dominate to cover 4.5, only stay close. Cleveland isn't bad, either. Building leads of 29 and 22 says this is a good team, so I'm not counting on another meltdown. I'm betting on the possession battle.
The swing is Anthony Edwards, questionable with right knee injury management. Edwards carried the same tag last night and still scored 26 in about 28 minutes, so it looks like something being played through. But the second night of a back-to-back is exactly when rest days happen, and at 4.5 an Edwards absence decides the game. If Edwards is ruled out, I'm off this side.
DiVincenzo, Diop and Tomlin haven't played all season, so nothing changes there for either team.
Wolves +4.5, with Edwards in uniform.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
MIN and CLE split last season 1-1
1-1Minnesota and Cleveland split last season's two meetings 1-1. Two games is too small to say much about the matchup. Tonight is the first meeting this season.
REPLACEMENT
Donte DiVincenzo is OUT for MIN
OUTDonte DiVincenzo is out for Minnesota with an Achilles injury. It is a long-term absence, so the rotation has already adjusted around him.
SITUATIONAL
MIN on a back-to-back, CLE rested
B2B vs 2dMinnesota is playing for the second night in a row while Cleveland has had 2 days off. Tired legs on the road tend to show late in games and in shooting. A rest gap like this is one of the steadier edges in the league, and it usually gets some weight in the line already. It matters most for second-half and late-game spots.
STREAK
MIN has won 3 straight
W3Minnesota is 3-0 and has won by 23.3 a game, which is dominant. Three games is a short run, and margins that wide rarely last as the schedule gets tougher. The streak shows a team playing well early, and the market will have noticed. Expect the margins to come down toward normal.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKPEYTON WATSONPOINTS REBOUNDS ASSISTS UNDER 18.5
Peyton Watson is the fifth option in the Cleveland starting lineup. Mitchell, Harden, Mobley and Allen take most of the touches, and Tyson and Hezonja compete off the bench for whatever shots are left. Watson has played about 30 minutes a night and turned that into 18 and 11 in points, rebounds and assists combined. This line sits right on his better game.
This matchup works against every part of his line. His points come from spot-up threes and cuts, and through two games he's 6 for 18 from the field and 2 for 9 from three. Minnesota is long on the wing with McDaniels and Kuminga, and all three of its opponents have shot badly from deep. The rebounds are the bigger problem for him. Minnesota has won the glass by at least 15 in every game, Gobert and McDaniels clean up the long misses, and Watson has pulled down 3 and 1 while Allen and Mobley take the rest. Without help from the boards, he needs a big scoring night to get to 19.
What beats it is a hot shooting night. Three made threes plus a putback or two gets him there quickly, and a close game keeps him on the floor late. At close to even money, I'll bet he stays the fifth option.
- GARY'S PICKJAMES HARDENPOINTS UNDER 17.5
James Harden runs the Cleveland offense, but scoring has been the weakest part of his game so far. He's 6 for 20 from the field through two games, with 16 at Philadelphia and 12 against Brooklyn. The 12 came on 1 for 8 shooting, almost all of it at the free throw line. Mitchell takes the big shots, Allen and Mobley finish inside, and Harden's job has been setting them up, with 7 and 5 assists.
Minnesota is a hard matchup for a guard who needs space to get his jumper off. Dosunmu and McDaniels can both guard him, Gobert is waiting at the rim, and every team the Wolves have played has shot poorly from three. Cleveland went 7 for 29 from deep in Philadelphia. If Harden's threes don't fall, there isn't much easy offense left for him to reach 18.
What beats it is the whistle. Minnesota fouls a lot, 26 times at Miami and 23 last night, and Harden drew enough contact against Brooklyn to score 12 on one made field goal. A dozen free throws and a couple of threes would clear this. An Edwards absence would also thin out Minnesota's perimeter defense. I'm betting Minnesota's length keeps him a passer first.
