The read
Both teams are on the second night of a back-to-back at the Delta Center, less than a week after Memphis beat Utah by 20 in Memphis. The Grizzlies are 3-0 and laying a point and a half on the road. I'm taking the Jazz.
Ty Jerome went 17-for-25 for 45 points in that 20-point win. Golden State led Memphis 106-94 with 3:47 left before Cameron Boozer's late jumper won it. Sacramento was missing Keegan Murray and Ben Simmons. The three teams Memphis has beaten are a combined 1-8. Jerome has been excellent and could keep it up, but three games is a thin record to price a road favorite on. Boozer has also shot 2-for-15 and 6-for-21 in two of them.
Utah is better than 1-2. In the Lakers loss, Luka Doncic scored 52, the Lakers made 20 threes and went 32-for-38 at the line. The Jazz still won the paint and the second-chance points 34-11. Lauri Markkanen, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Keyonte George have Utah scoring 120 and 123 in its last two games.
This is the third game in four nights for both teams. Memphis flew in from Sacramento to play at altitude, while Utah slept at home. That's already in the number, but at 1.5 it's a reason not to lay points with the traveling team.
The risk is real. In the first meeting, Memphis took 93 shots to Utah's 75, won the offensive glass 15-5 and committed 13 turnovers to Utah's 18. Utah has turned it over 17 or 18 times in every game, and Zach Edey is expected back. That's why this is a lean, not a strong play.
The swing factor is Jaxson Hayes, questionable with a sore shoulder. Jusuf Nurkic is out, and Mo Bamba, Tony Bradley and Kyle Filipowski were all coach's-decision DNPs on Sunday. That leaves Hayes as Utah's only real center. If Hayes is ruled out against a returning Edey, this play is off. If Hayes suits up, take Utah plus the points.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
MEM and UTA split last season 2-2
2-2Memphis and Utah split last season's four meetings 2-2. The series gave neither side an edge. Tonight is the first meeting this season.
REPLACEMENT
Jusuf Nurkic is OUT for UTA
OUTJusuf Nurkic is out for Utah for at least four weeks with a partial plantar plate tear in his right foot. Utah loses size inside against Memphis, and Lauri Markkanen could see more time near the basket.
Trey Alexander is OUT for UTA
OUTTrey Alexander is out for Utah with a left knee bone bruise. His minutes go to others in the backcourt, a depth question for tonight.
SITUATIONAL
Both sides on a back-to-back (played yesterday)
1d bothBoth teams played yesterday, so both are on the second night of a back-to-back. Neither side gains from the schedule, though tired legs on both ends can slow the pace and drag the scoring down.
STREAK
MEM has won 3 straight
W3Memphis is 3-0 and has won by 11.3 a game. Three games is a short sample, but double-digit margins point to more than luck. Early streaks draw market attention, so watch whether the price now expects the margins to keep coming.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKCAMERON BOOZERREBOUNDS OVER 9.5
Cameron Boozer has pulled down 11, 13 and 11 rebounds in his first three games, playing 31 to 37 minutes each night. The book is asking for 10 and paying plus money. I'll take it.
The main worry is Zach Edey coming back and eating into Boozer's boards. Two of those three games already came with Edey on the floor, though, and that includes 11 rebounds against this same Jazz team last Wednesday. Edey has played 21 and 22 minutes this season, so Boozer still has plenty of time on the floor as the main big without him. Memphis won that first meeting on the glass 55-38 and grabbed 15 offensive rebounds to Utah's 5.
Utah is thin up front. Jusuf Nurkic is out and Jaxson Hayes is questionable with a sore shoulder. Mo Bamba, Tony Bradley and Kyle Filipowski all sat Sunday on coach's decisions. Jaren Jackson Jr. is a shot blocker who had two rebounds against the Lakers, and that frontcourt doesn't scare me on the defensive glass. Both teams are on the second night of a back-to-back, and tired legs miss shots. More misses mean more chances for Boozer.
What beats it: Edey plays bigger minutes in his return and grabs every board around the rim. Utah shoots well enough to keep the misses down. Or the game gets out of hand either way and Boozer sits the fourth quarter. If Hayes is active and plays his normal minutes, Utah is tougher on the glass, though not by enough to move me off this number.
- GARY'S PICKAIRIOUS BAILEYREBOUNDS OVER 4.5
Airious Bailey has rebound totals of 5, 7 and 12 this season, and the line only asks for five. Utah is short on size, which puts more of the glass on its wings, and Bailey is the wing who goes and gets it.
He has started the last two games and played 29 minutes Sunday against the Lakers. That's where he got 12 boards on top of 17 points. With Nurkic out and Hayes questionable, Will Hardy has no real center behind Hayes. If the shoulder keeps Hayes out or limits him, Bailey's role on the boards and his minutes both grow.
Memphis puts up a lot of shots. The Grizzlies took 93 against Utah, 86 at Golden State and 95 in Sacramento, and they missed a lot of them. Every possession they don't rebound for themselves is a defensive board up for grabs, and on the second night of a back-to-back that shot volume should produce plenty of misses.
What beats it: the first meeting is the warning. Bailey came off the bench, played 24 minutes and finished with exactly five rebounds, while Memphis owned the offensive glass. Boozer and a returning Edey could clean up most of the misses again. Minutes are the other risk. Josh Green and Josh Okogie are now in the rotation, and Bailey sat the whole fourth quarter against New Orleans. If he is back on the bench and stuck around 20 minutes, five boards gets tight.
