The read
The 0-3 Warriors walk into Ball Arena tonight with Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Brandin Podziemski and Al Horford back, and Denver is laying 7.5. The question isn't who wins. It's whether the Nuggets win by eight or more, and I lean no.
Start with who's actually rested. Golden State carries the game-3-in-4-nights tag, but its core sat Saturday at Phoenix and last played Friday. Denver's stars got no such break: Nikola Jokic logged 44 minutes, Jamal Murray 43 and Christian Braun 40 in Saturday's overtime win, with one day off since.
Then look at Denver's wings. Cameron Johnson is Doubtful and accounts for 18.5% of the team's points. Alpha Diallo, Julian Strawther and Spencer Jones are out. That pushed Bryce Hopkins into the starting five, and Hopkins scored 2 points in 19 minutes against New Orleans. Trevon Brazile has been a find, but it's a short bench to build a margin with.
Denver's defense hasn't earned a big number either. An 0-3 Pelicans team led 108-89 after three quarters in Denver and scored 135. It took 42 from Murray, a 35-point triple-double from Jokic and overtime to win by six.
When Golden State has had its group, it has competed. With Curry, Green and Podziemski on the floor, the Warriors led 3-0 Memphis 90-84 after three and lost by three. They crash the glass too, with 19, 18 and 15 offensive rebounds, and extra possessions keep margins tight.
The risks are real. Jokic draws Graham Ike, Horford and Green, and Walker Kessler went 12-for-12 against this frontcourt in the opener, a Lakers blowout with Curry and Green playing. The Warriors have allowed 127, 111 and 131 and turned it over 15 to 19 times a night. Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg played 37 and 36 minutes on the back-to-back and now goes at altitude. And their cold three-point shooting isn't owed a turnaround.
It's a lean, not a hammer. Johnson's absence has been priced since the first report. The edge is a number that may be shading Golden State for a schedule its best players didn't really play through.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
GSW and DEN split last season 2-2
2-2Golden State and Denver split last season's four meetings 2-2. Neither team had the upper hand. Tonight is the first meeting this season.
REPLACEMENT
Julian Strawther is OUT for DEN
OUTJulian Strawther is out for Denver with a left knee sprain. With Spencer Jones also out, Denver has fewer wing options against Golden State.
Moses Moody is OUT for GSW
OUTMoses Moody is out for Golden State after left patellar tendon surgery. He joins Jimmy Butler and Kristaps Porzingis on the sidelines, leaving Golden State thin on the wing at Denver.
Jimmy Butler is OUT for GSW
OUTJimmy Butler is out for Golden State as he recovers from right ACL surgery. This is a known long-term absence, so the market should already reflect it. It does thin out an already short-handed group.
Spencer Jones is OUT for DEN
OUTSpencer Jones is out for Denver while the team manages hamstring injuries on both legs. Julian Strawther is also out, so Denver's wing depth takes a hit against Golden State.
Kristaps Porzingis is OUT for GSW
OUTKristaps Porzingis is out for Golden State and is not with the team. He has been weighing his future in basketball, so this looks like more than a one-game absence. His size is off the floor either way.
SITUATIONAL
Both sides on 2 days rest
2d bothBoth teams have 2 days rest, so the schedule is even. Golden State's injury list is the bigger factor, with Jimmy Butler, Kristaps Porzingis and Moses Moody all out.
STREAK
GSW has lost 3 straight
L3Golden State is 0-3 and has lost by 11.3 a game. Three games is a small sample, but double-digit losses are a real early warning. Losing streaks can push a price too far, so weigh how many key players are missing before treating the start as the team's true level.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKSTEPHEN CURRYPOINTS OVER 24.5
Stephen Curry has scored 23 and 24 in his two games while getting very little help from his jumper. He went 2-for-7 from three against the Lakers and 3-for-10 against Memphis. The 23 came in 21 minutes of a blowout. He is still getting to the line, 18-for-18 across the two nights, and that keeps his floor high even when the shot is off.
Tonight he comes in rested. Golden State held him out Saturday at Phoenix, so he last played Friday and gets two days off. Denver had no such break. Jamal Murray played 43 minutes Saturday and Christian Braun played 40, and those are the two guards who have to chase him.
Denver is also thin on the wing. Cameron Johnson is Doubtful, and Alpha Diallo, Julian Strawther and Spencer Jones are out. Bryce Hopkins moved into the starting five and played 19 minutes Saturday. The Nuggets do not have many fresh bodies to throw at Curry. An 0-3 New Orleans team scored 135 in this building two nights ago.
I have Golden State keeping this inside the number, and a close game means Curry is on the floor late. With 30 or more minutes, his scoring pace this season clears 24.5 without needing a hot shooting night.
What beats it: Golden State could manage his minutes again after sitting him Saturday. Brandin Podziemski and Yaxel Lendeborg both want shots, and Lendeborg has been the team's leading scorer. Braun is a real defender and Denver can trap Curry to make someone else beat them. If the three stays cold and the free throws dry up, or Denver blows it open and he sits the fourth, he falls short.
- GARY'S PICKNIKOLA JOKICREBOUNDS OVER 12.5
Golden State misses a lot of shots. The Warriors went 38-for-92 against the Lakers, 34-for-83 against Memphis and 41-for-91 at Phoenix, with three-point shooting of 8-for-36 and 14-for-41 in two of those. That is a steady supply of long and short misses, and the defensive glass belongs to Nikola Jokic.
The Warriors' frontcourt has nobody built to move him off his spot. Graham Ike, Al Horford and Draymond Green will take turns on him, and Walker Kessler went 12-for-12 against that group in the opener. Jokic pulled 15 rebounds against New Orleans with real size on the floor. Cameron Johnson being Doubtful also takes one rebounding wing out of Denver's rotation, which leaves more of the defensive boards for the big man.
I think this stays competitive, so Jokic should get his full minutes rather than sitting a decided fourth quarter. At plus money on a number he already beat in a full game, I'll take it.
What beats it: Golden State crashes the offensive glass hard, with 19, 18 and 15 offensive rebounds, so some of those misses go back to the Warriors. Trevon Brazile has grabbed 12 and 9 in his two games and takes boards off the same pile, and Braun and Aaron Gordon rebound well for their positions. Jokic played 44 minutes Saturday, and in the opener at Oklahoma City he finished with 7. If Green drags him out to the perimeter on switches or Denver pulls away early, the total stalls short.
