The read
Miami is 0-3, outscored by 47, and still laying 7.5 at Kaseya Center to a Dallas team getting Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg back. The market is pricing the roster, not the record, and three games against Minnesota and Detroit, both 3-0, plus a 5-point loss at Charlotte isn't enough to argue with that.
The case for Miami starts with Dallas's rotation. Irving returns, but Irving's two appearances lasted 23:45 and 24:54, so plan on roughly half the game without Irving. Those minutes fall to Marcus Sasser, Sergio De Larrea and two-way signee Walter Clayton Jr. Naji Marshall is out after logging 29, 33 and 21 minutes, on top of Dereck Lively II, Santi Aldama and Caleb Martin. At a small number that's a depth issue; at 7.5 it's where the cover gets made, because leads grow when a team's best creator sits.
Ball security is the next problem. Dallas turned it over 21 times at Houston, and San Antonio converted Dallas giveaways into 26 points on Saturday. Young guards handling for long stretches against Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo in the open floor is a bad matchup. The glass leans the same way: Houston grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and San Antonio 15, and Daniel Gafford is the only true big Dallas has in heavy use.
Miami's biggest weakness doesn't line up with Dallas's strength, either. The Heat got buried by threes — Minnesota went 21-50, Detroit 18-38, Charlotte 16-43. Dallas took 37, 34 and 28. This isn't a team built to win that way.
The risks are real. Adebayo fouled out against Detroit and Antetokounmpo fouled out at Charlotte, and Miami's margin disappears when Antetokounmpo sits. Miami's shooting, 8-33, 15-51 and 13-35 from three, isn't due to bounce back. And Dallas with Irving and Flagg won by 16 at Indiana. Flagg is probable with a shoulder sprain after playing 17 minutes in that game and sitting Saturday; a late scratch would only strengthen this side.
Both teams are on game three in four nights with a day off — that's already in the price. At -122 this is a lean, not a hammer, but Miami's frontline against a thin Dallas rotation is the side.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
DAL and MIA split last season 1-1
1-1Dallas and Miami split last season's two meetings 1-1. Two games tells you little about the matchup. Tonight is the first meeting this season.
REPLACEMENT
Santi Aldama is OUT for DAL
OUTSanti Aldama is out for Dallas after right knee surgery. Dallas is also without Dereck Lively II and Tarik Biberovic, so the frontcourt is thin tonight at Miami. Expect more minutes for whoever is left up front.
Dereck Lively II is OUT for DAL
OUTDereck Lively II is out for Dallas after right foot surgery. With Santi Aldama and Tarik Biberovic also out, Dallas is short on size at Miami, which matters for rebounding and rim protection.
Tarik Biberovic is OUT for DAL
OUTTarik Biberovic is out for Dallas with right heel bursitis. He joins Santi Aldama and Dereck Lively II on the sidelines, which leaves Dallas thin at Miami.
SITUATIONAL
Both sides on 2 days rest
2d bothBoth teams have 2 days rest, so there is no schedule edge. The bigger factor is Dallas missing Santi Aldama, Dereck Lively II and Tarik Biberovic.
STREAK
MIA has lost 3 straight
L3Miami is 0-3 and has lost by 15.7 a game. That is a rough start, but three games is a small sample to call it who they are. Losing streaks often push the market to price a team lower than it deserves. The size of the losses matters more than the count here, so look for whether they are closing that gap.

2- GARY'S PICKDAVION MITCHELLPOINTS REBOUNDS ASSISTS OVER 20.5
Davion Mitchell is the one Miami guard whose role has held through an ugly 0-3 start: 32.8, 32.9 and 37.0 minutes, and the Heat lean on Mitchell harder the worse things get. The comeback at Charlotte ran through Mitchell, who shot 8-13 and finished with 22 points and 10 assists. The line is 20.5 at -115, and Mitchell has posted 22, 25 and 33.
The matchup helps. Dallas gets Kyrie Irving back, but Irving has played under 25 minutes both times, so the rest of the point guard minutes go to Marcus Sasser, Sergio De Larrea and Walter Clayton Jr. None of them is going to make Mitchell's night hard at the point of attack. Dallas has also turned it over 14, 21 and 18 times, and live-ball turnovers become Miami running the floor, which is where Mitchell piles up assists to Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo at the rim. With Naji Marshall out, Dallas has even fewer bodies to throw at the ball.
The scoring side holds up too. Defenses collapse on Antetokounmpo, Mitchell gets clean looks, and Mitchell has made seven threes in three games.
What beats it is the same blowout I'm backing in the game call. If Miami is up 20 going into the fourth, Erik Spoelstra pulls the starters and Mitchell's minutes slide into the high 20s. The other path is another cold shooting night like Detroit, when Miami went 39-102 from the floor and Mitchell's assists fell to five. At this number I'll carry that risk.
- GARY'S PICKANDREW WIGGINSPOINTS UNDER 12.5
Andrew Wiggins at 12.5 points is priced off the name. In this Miami rotation Wiggins is the fifth option: 11, 8 and 4 points, on 10-28 shooting and 2-11 from three. The minutes keep shrinking, 27.3 to 25.6 to 18.4, while Pelle Larsson has gone 24, 29, then 36. When Miami came back from 22 down at Charlotte, the group that did it was Mitchell, Adebayo, Larsson, Hardaway and Portis, and Wiggins sat.
The shots run through Antetokounmpo first, then Mitchell, Adebayo and Klay Thompson, who is still hunting threes. Wiggins is left to cut and take what's there. Dallas is thin on the wing with Naji Marshall out, but the Mavericks will load up on Antetokounmpo, and Wiggins hasn't been the one making teams pay for that.
The game script helps as well. If Miami covers 7.5 the way I expect, the fourth quarter belongs to the bench, and a player already losing minutes to Larsson loses more of them.
What beats it is a night where the jumper falls. Wiggins can hit four catch-and-shoot threes against Max Christie or Zaccharie Risacher, and if Antetokounmpo picks up fouls again the touches spread out. Dallas giveaways could also hand Wiggins a few easy points in transition. At -111 I'm fine owning that.
