The read
Two days after Houston won 121–114 in Atlanta, the same teams meet again at Toyota Center. This time the Rockets have the home floor and Fred VanVleet back.
Saturday's 7-point margin undersells that game. Houston was on the second night of a back-to-back, reached its Atlanta hotel around 4–5 a.m., and played without VanVleet, Marcus Smart and Steven Adams. The Rockets still led 59–48 at the half, 85–65 in the third and 108–88 with 7:58 left. Atlanta didn't lead after the first five minutes. The final number came from a 24–9 run once the game looked settled.
Every change since then points toward Houston. Both teams had Sunday off and both play a third game in four nights, so the fatigue gap is gone. Smart and Adams are still out, but they missed Saturday too. Atlanta brings the same nine-man rotation. Mouhamed Gueye and Henri Veesaar haven't played all season.
VanVleet's return is about depth, not scoring. Reed Sheppard filled that spot Saturday with 19 points, 5-of-11 from three and 7 assists, and now joins Tari Eason and Bogdan Bogdanovic on the bench. Amen Thompson and Kevin Durant shouldn't need 39 and 37 minutes again.
The risks are real. Atlanta won the paint 58–46 and fast breaks 20–12 and grabbed 17 offensive rebounds. Houston's backup center spot is thin with Adams out; Clint Capela played 11 minutes Saturday. Dyson Daniels had five steals at Orlando and seven at Charlotte, and Houston turned it over 14 times Saturday. A sloppy Rockets night probably lands inside the number.
Atlanta also shot 13-of-49 from three Saturday, after 14-of-36 and 18-of-45 in its first two games. No team is owed makes, but a normal Hawks shooting night is the clearest way this stays close. Late fouling can also swing a basket either way at 5.5.
Still, the price assumes Saturday was closer than it was. Houston at home, on even rest and with VanVleet back, should clear 6 more often than not. Rockets -5.5.

The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
HOU won last season's series 2-0
2-0Houston beat Atlanta in both meetings last season by 20 a game. Two games is a very small series, so the margin says more about those two nights than the matchup. Tonight is the first meeting this season.
REPLACEMENT
Mouhamed Gueye is OUT for ATL
OUTMouhamed Gueye is out for Atlanta after surgery on a left foot fracture. It is a known absence, so his minutes are likely already spread across the rotation and baked into the numbers.
Henri Veesaar is OUT for ATL
OUTHenri Veesaar is out for Atlanta with a torn right ACL, a long-term absence. That is already part of how Atlanta plays, so it should not move tonight's number much.
SITUATIONAL
Both sides on 2 days rest
2d bothBoth teams have 2 days of rest, so the schedule does not favor either side.
STREAK
HOU has won 3 straight
W3Houston has won its first 3 by an average of 9.7. Three games is a short run, but winning by nearly ten a night is a clean start. Hot starts get priced in fast, so the useful question is whether the line has caught up to the form.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKAMEN THOMPSONREBOUNDS OVER 8.5
Amen Thompson has three double-doubles in three games, with 10, 10 and 11 rebounds. Tonight's matchup sets up for that to continue, and I get plus money on it.
Start with how Atlanta plays. The Hawks put up 96 shots Saturday, 49 of them threes, and made 13. Long misses come off the rim long, and Thompson is the Houston player who goes and gets them. He plays the guard spot on the floor but rebounds like a forward. Houston's interior help is thin too. Steven Adams is out again, and Clint Capela played 11 minutes Saturday. That leaves Thompson and Alperen Sengun to clean the glass, and Jabari Smith Jr. has stayed at 5 boards every night.
The obvious worry is minutes. Fred VanVleet is back, and I expect Thompson to come down from the 39 he played Saturday. That hurts less than it looks. He had 10 rebounds in 33 minutes against Dallas, so he doesn't need a heavy load to get to 9. Atlanta also attacks the offensive glass hard, with 17 offensive rebounds Saturday. When the Hawks crash, the boards come down in a crowd, and Thompson's length and second jump win those.
What beats it: Atlanta getting back to a normal shooting night, which means fewer misses to chase. A Houston blowout that sends him to the bench early in the fourth. Sengun pulling in everything around the rim, since he had 10 Saturday. Okongwu and Johnson keep winning the offensive boards and Thompson ends on 8. At +108 I'm happy to carry those risks. Thompson over 8.5 rebounds.
- GARY'S PICKJALEN JOHNSONPOINTS UNDER 21.5
Jalen Johnson is running Atlanta, and 21.5 is priced off what he has done this week. I think the shape of his scoring makes the under the better side tonight.
Johnson isn't scoring from outside. He is 2-of-14 from three this season, with no makes at Orlando or Charlotte. His points come from driving and from the line. That route goes straight at the worst matchup in the building. Houston can send Amen Thompson, Kevin Durant, Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason at him in turn, all long and quick enough to stay in front. When they showed him a crowd Saturday, he passed out of it and finished with 16 assists. That's how the Hawks get their best looks, and every possession he spends creating for Nickeil Alexander-Walker or Dyson Daniels is one he doesn't finish himself.
The 26 he scored Saturday came with help: 38 minutes, 8-of-10 free throws, and a late push when Atlanta was down 20 and needed everything from him. In his two normal-minute games he scored 20 and 19. VanVleet's return also means fewer loose Houston possessions. That should cut into the turnovers and the 20 fast-break points that gave Johnson open-floor chances.
What beats it: another close game that keeps him on the floor near 38 minutes. A free throw night like Saturday, which can carry him past the number with no jumper falling. A couple of threes going in. He has the ball every trip, so the risk is real, and the price is fair rather than generous. Johnson under 21.5 points.
