The read

Target Center hosts its home opener tonight, with two 2-0 teams meeting at a number barely bigger than home court. The market has them even on a neutral floor. I have Minnesota a little better than that because of how each team has been building its leads.

Toronto's two wins came more from opponents falling apart than from its own shooting. Chicago turned it over 27 times and Washington 20, while the Raptors shot 10-31 and 7-34 from three. Minnesota doesn't give the ball away like that, with 14 and 12 turnovers in two road wins. The free possessions that carried Toronto shouldn't be there tonight. And nobody is owed made threes: Quickley, Barrett, Barnes, Leonard and Walter are the shooters this roster has.

The foul line leans Minnesota too. Toronto committed 31 and 29 fouls, and its opponents went 30-35 and 34-47 at the stripe. Minnesota got to the line 29 and 30 times with Anthony Edwards attacking the rim. In a game priced this tight, a few extra free throws decide the cover.

Kawhi Leonard is still on a conditioning restriction. He played 24 minutes in a blowout and 28 in a real game, and there's no word it's lifted. His leftover minutes go to Ja'Kobe Walter, Collin Murray-Boyles and Jamison Battle. At a big spread that's noise; at 1.5 it matters. Minnesota has more shooting, at 21-50 and 14-37 from deep, and a settled bench of Ayo Dosunmu, Terrence Shannon Jr., Trey Lyles and Joan Beringer behind Rudy Gobert.

Some things don't move me. Edwards' 45-point night and the 5-for-23 night after it are two games of a long season. Donte DiVincenzo and Nate Bittle haven't played, so neither rotation changes. Both teams had a day off, and the home-opener story isn't worth points.

The risk is real. Toronto's defense forces turnovers on purpose through Scottie Barnes, Murray-Boyles and Jamal Shead. Both teams also hammer the offensive glass: Toronto had 19 and 16 offensive rebounds, Minnesota 22 and 17. If the Raptors win the extra-possession fight, this flips. Minnesota's wins also came against teams that are now 0-3 and 0-2.

This is a lean, not a hammer. Minnesota -1.5 at a near-even price is where I land.

Injuries noted

Toronto Raptors: Nate Bittle (Out) — Injury/Illness - Right Foot Avulsion Fracture

Minnesota Timberwolves: Donte DiVincenzo (Out) — Injury/Illness - Right Achilles Tendon Repair / Surgery

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • MIN won last season's series 2-0

    2-0

Minnesota won both meetings last season by 5 a game. Two close games is too small a sample to say much, especially with Toronto's roster changed.

REPLACEMENT

  • Nate Bittle is OUT for TOR

    OUT

Bittle is out with a foot fracture. A depth note for Toronto's frontcourt.

  • Donte DiVincenzo is OUT for MIN

    OUT

DiVincenzo is out after Achilles surgery. Minnesota has known about this for a while, so his minutes are already spread across the guard rotation.

SITUATIONAL

  • Both sides on 2 days rest

    2d both

Both teams have had 2 days off. No rest edge either way.

    Points under 24.5

    Toronto Raptors

Kawhi Leonard is still on the conditioning restriction Darko Rajakovic described before the opener, and nothing says it's lifted for tonight. So far that has meant 24 minutes in a blowout of Chicago and 28 in a game Toronto had to close out at Washington. A 24.5 line asks for nearly a point a minute from a player capped somewhere in the high twenties.

The shooting doesn't support a jump. Leonard is 12-37 from the floor and 4-14 from three through two games. The 23 against Chicago came largely from the line in a game that was over after one quarter, when the Bulls were fouling all night. Minnesota fouls far less: 19 and 26 fouls in its two wins, with Miami and Orlando getting to the line 26 and 19 times. Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert also make the midrange and the rim harder to get to than anything Washington or Chicago showed.

The Toronto shots are spread around too. Scottie Barnes took 26 at Washington, RJ Barrett has been the most efficient scorer on the roster, and Immanuel Quickley runs the offense. Leonard doesn't need to force it, and the minutes cap gives no room to make up a slow start.

What beats it: a tight game where the restriction quietly loosens and Leonard plays past 30 minutes, or one hot midrange quarter. A great shooter can get to 25 fast, and that's the risk I'm taking. Under 24.5 at -122.

    Rudy Gobert
    Rebounds over 10.5

    -128 · CASHED · ACTUAL 13

    Minnesota Timberwolves

Gobert's rebound number comes down to how many misses Toronto puts up, and the Raptors put up a lot. They took 101 shots at Washington and 98 against Chicago, made 44 each night, and went 17-65 from three across the two games. Toronto keeps its shot volume high by forcing turnovers and crashing the glass, and that means a steady flow of missed shots at Gobert's end of the floor.

Gobert grabbed 15 in 33 minutes at Miami. At Orlando it was 9 in 30 minutes, with Joan Beringer taking 9 in under 15 minutes as the backup. Gobert's minutes have held around 30 or more, and a game priced at 1.5 shouldn't turn into a blowout that hands the fourth quarter to Beringer.

Toronto's frontcourt is the obstacle. Jakob Poeltl, Scottie Barnes and Collin Murray-Boyles chase offensive boards, 19 at Washington and 16 against Chicago, and each one is a rebound Gobert doesn't get. Minnesota also shares the defensive glass, with McDaniels and Kuminga each posting an eight-rebound game already.

What beats it: Poeltl keeping Gobert off the ball, long three-point misses bouncing out to the perimeter, or Toronto finally shooting well and leaving fewer misses. I'll take the volume. Over 10.5 at -128.
