The read
Memphis rolls into Golden 1 Center at 2-0 with Zach Edey resting on the front end of a back-to-back, and Sacramento is still chasing its first win, now without Keegan Murray. The Grizzlies lay 3.5 on the road, and I'm laying it with them.
Edey's rest and Cedric Coward's questionable tag have been on the report since Saturday night, so they're already in this number. The late news is Murray going from Doubtful to Out, and that hurts depth more than production. Murray went 1-of-8 and 4-of-9, 0-for-7 from three, and sat the entire fourth quarter Friday. Precious Achiuwa was already outplaying the role. The extra minutes fall to Daeqwon Plowden, Emanuel Sharp, Nique Clifford and Malik Monk, who was scoreless on six shots in Friday's return. Zach LaVine, Domantas Sabonis and Darius Acuff Jr. already played 34 to 39 minutes, and the Kings still lost both third quarters badly.
The shot profile is about who's on the roster. Sacramento attempted 31 and 28 threes while opponents took 48 and 35. Memphis took 34 and 39. That isn't a cold streak the Kings are owed back. Their equalizer is the foul line, 28-of-30 Friday, and Memphis fouls plenty, so that's Sacramento's path to staying close.
Memphis can absorb its absences. Edey plays 21 to 22 minutes, and Isaiah Stewart and Quinten Post can cover them. Jerami Grant, GG Jackson, Scotty Pippen Jr., Cam Spencer and Kris Murray all play real minutes, and Memphis won at Golden State without Coward. The Kings, meanwhile, allowed 121 and 128 to teams missing pieces of their own.
The case against is real. Sabonis has 18 and 19 rebounds, and Memphis's 15 and 18 offensive-rebound nights came with Edey on the floor. The 2-0 also flatters the Grizzlies. Ty Jerome's 45 on 17-of-25 isn't a nightly baseline. The Golden State win needed a 12-point comeback in the final four minutes despite 25 turnovers, against a winless, short-handed team. Play that loose and Sacramento covers.
Still, the late news leaves the Kings thinner, and Memphis's depth and three-point volume should build a margin past the number. Sabonis on the glass is why this is a lean, not a hammer.

Props on this game
1- GARY'S PICKPRECIOUS ACHIUWAPOINTS OVER 10.5
Achiuwa scored 15 and 14 coming off the bench in 26 to 29 minutes, and Murray's injury moves him into the starting five. Murray was taking 26 to 28 minutes a night, and Christie had already sat him the whole fourth quarter Friday to keep Achiuwa on the floor. That role was trending toward Achiuwa before the injury report made it official.
The matchup helps. With Edey resting, the Memphis rim protection drops off a cliff, and Achiuwa does his damage on rolls, cuts and putbacks around Sabonis's playmaking. Sabonis averaged nine assists in the first two games, and a big rolling into an empty paint is exactly where those passes go. Memphis also fouled 26 and 30 times, so a player who lives near the basket gets trips to the line.
At even money I'm not asking for much more than he's already done in a smaller role.
What beats it is efficiency coming back to earth. Achiuwa is 12-of-19 so far, and if those layups turn into contested misses against Stewart, he can end up around nine. The shots could also run elsewhere: LaVine and Darius Acuff Jr. take a lot of attempts, and if Christie goes small with Daeqwon Plowden or Malik Monk to chase Memphis's shooters, Achiuwa's minutes don't grow the way they should. Foul trouble on a physical big is the last risk. I still like the bigger role at this price.
