The read
The Lakers bring a 2-0 start into Delta Center for a 3 p.m. local tip, their first road game of the season, against a Utah team that is 1-1 and plays again tomorrow. Los Angeles is the better team, but at 6.5 I'm taking the points.
The 2-0 start looks better than it is. Both wins came at home against short-handed opponents: Golden State was without Jimmy Butler III, Kristaps Porzingis, Moses Moody and Brandin Podziemski, and the Clippers were missing Bradley Beal, Brandon Ingram and Max Strus. The shooting was also unusually good. The Lakers went 46-of-79 and 46-of-81, Walker Kessler went 12-of-12 and then 10-of-14, and Austin Reaves hit 10 of 13 on Friday. They aren't due for a cold night, but those two games aren't their normal level either. The Clippers game was tied 64-64 at halftime and was decided largely by 25 Clippers turnovers.
The Lakers have been careless with the ball too: 18 turnovers against Golden State and 21 against the Clippers, with Luka Dončić committing 6 and then 11. That keeps a road game close.
The matchup I like most for Utah is in the frontcourt. Kessler has been the Lakers' best early story, including six blocks Friday, and he is at his best near the rim. Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen can both shoot from outside and pull him away from it. Brook Lopez, a big man who shoots threes, scored 22 points in 20 minutes against the Lakers on Friday. Utah also grabbed 14 offensive rebounds against New Orleans, and the Lakers gave up 15 to Golden State.
The injury report doesn't change much. Cameron Carr, Adou Thiero and Jusuf Nurkic are all out, but none of them has played. Jake LaRavia returning mostly takes minutes from Collin Sexton. The altitude, the early tip and Utah's back-to-back are already in the number.
The risk is Utah's ball security. The Jazz turned it over 18 times in each of their games, and the Lakers' defenders turned Clippers mistakes into a 14-1 third-quarter run. Utah's defense also allowed Ty Jerome 45 points at Memphis, and Dončić can have a night like that.
The Lakers should win, but I expect it to finish inside 7. Jazz +6.5.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
LAL won last season's series 4-0
4-0The Lakers swept Utah 4-0 last season and won by 12 a game. That is a lopsided series, but rosters and roles change over a summer, and four games is a small set. Use it as a sign of how badly Utah matched up last year, then check whether tonight's injury news on both sides changes that.
REPLACEMENT
Trey Alexander is OUT for UTA
OUTAlexander is on a two-way deal and in the G League. No effect on Utah's rotation tonight.
Adou Thiero is OUT for LAL
OUTThiero is out with knee swelling. A depth note for the Lakers.
Cameron Carr is OUT for LAL
OUTCarr is out with an oblique strain. A depth note for the Lakers.
Jusuf Nurkic is OUT for UTA
OUTNurkic is out with a foot injury that was expected to cost him weeks. Utah is short a big man against the Lakers.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKWALKER KESSLERREBOUNDS UNDER 10.5
Kessler had 8 and 9 rebounds in his first two games, both under this number, in 35 and 30 minutes against Golden State and the Clippers. Tonight's matchup should make rebounding harder for him. Utah starts Jackson at center and Lauri Markkanen at power forward, and both spend a lot of time behind the arc. If Kessler is guarding a big who's spotting up for three, he's out of position when the shot goes up, and long rebounds off missed threes go to guards and wings.
The Lakers also have other players taking defensive rebounds. Luka Dončić had 8 and then 6. Quentin Grimes had 8 Friday, and Ziaire Williams and Matisse Thybulle both get to loose balls. Utah went to the offensive glass hard against New Orleans and grabbed 14, so a lot of Kessler's time under the rim will go to boxing someone out while a teammate gets the ball. His offensive rebounds are limited too. The Lakers have made 46 shots in each game, and Kessler has gone 22 of 26 from the field, so there haven't been many misses near him to clean up.
I'll take plus money on the under.
What beats it is a long night of Utah misses. The Jazz shot 35 of 75 at Memphis, and a game like that gives Kessler a lot of chances even if he's playing farther from the rim. Jaxson Hayes played 26 minutes Friday and closed the game, and when Hayes is on the floor Kessler can stay in the paint. If the Lakers' shooting cools off on the road and the game stays close enough for him to play 35 minutes, he can get to 11.
- GARY'S PICKJAREN JACKSON JR.POINTS OVER 17.5
The frontcourt matchup is the main reason I'm on Utah plus the points tonight, and Jaren Jackson Jr. is at the center of it. He's starting at center, so he draws Walker Kessler, who has been the Lakers' best early story and does his work at the rim. Kessler had six blocks Friday. Jackson can make him leave the paint. He has taken four threes in each of his first two games and made two both times. If Kessler closes out, Jackson can put it on the floor and get to the basket or the line. If Kessler sags, Jackson gets an open shot. Two nights ago Brook Lopez, a big man who shoots threes, scored 22 points in 20 minutes against this same Lakers defense.
Jackson has also been Utah's most reliable scorer so far. His opener at Memphis was ugly, with five turnovers and fouling out in 28 minutes, and he still scored 15. Against New Orleans he played 33 minutes and scored 24 with 10 rebounds. With Jusuf Nurkic out, Utah's frontcourt minutes go to Jackson and Jaxson Hayes, and Jackson is the one Utah runs offense through. The Lakers have committed 25 and 22 fouls in their two games, which gives a big who attacks shot blockers plenty of free throws. I expect a close game, and that keeps him on the floor for his full workload.
What beats it is fouls. He fouled out at Memphis, and chasing Kessler on the other end while Kessler rolls to the rim could put him on the bench early. If the Lakers pull away, Utah has a game tomorrow and would have every reason to rest its starters in the fourth. Matisse Thybulle's hands in passing lanes could also turn some of his touches into turnovers.
