The read

The Thunder are 2-0 and home on two days' rest at Paycom Center tonight, laying 16.5 to a Clippers team with Beal, Ingram and Strus in street clothes. The market already priced all of that, along with OKC's back-to-back tomorrow. The question is what this matchup adds, and I think it adds to Oklahoma City's side.

Start with how OKC has been winning. The Thunder beat San Antonio and Denver by 12 apiece while shooting poorly, going 36-95 from the field and 11-43 from three against the Nuggets. The margin came from possessions: 95 shots in each game, only 12 and 11 turnovers, 22 turnovers forced from Denver and 16 offensive rebounds. I'm not counting on the threes to start falling. Ball security and pressure carry from night to night.

Now look at who walks in. The Clippers turned it over 17 times against a short-handed Kings team and 25 times at the Lakers. Garland had 9 of those, and the Lakers scored 33 points off them. With Beal and Ingram out, the offense leans almost entirely on Garland and Dunn. OKC's backcourt is the toughest pressure they've seen: Wallace had 4 steals and Mitchell 5 against Denver, with Caruso and Gilgeous-Alexander on top of that. At a number this big, that matters most. Home blowouts get built on runs off live-ball turnovers.

The Clippers' defense hasn't helped either; the Lakers shot 46-79. Their nine-man rotation leans on rookie Wagler and Sanders. OKC's bench of McCain, Mitchell, Caruso and Jaylin Williams can hold or extend a lead.

The risks are real. If OKC is up 20 after three, the starters likely rest with tomorrow's game ahead, and Gilgeous-Alexander already asked out late against Denver. If Garland has a three-turnover night and the Clippers shoot threes like they have (16-37, 14-35), this is a 10-to-14-point game. And if Lopez's 8-for-9 night carries over, it pulls OKC's bigs away from the rim.

Still, OKC's formula feeds directly on the Clippers' biggest weakness. I'll lay the 16.5.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • OKC won last season's series 3-0

    3-0

Oklahoma City swept the Clippers 3-0 last season, by 19.3 a game. Three games is a small sample, but those were blowouts, and the Clippers come in tonight missing a long list of players. Large spreads in this matchup have history behind them.

REPLACEMENT

  • Bradley Beal is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Beal is out with a right knee issue, one of several Clippers missing tonight. That pushes more shots toward Garland and whoever starts on the wing.

  • Otega Oweh is OUT for OKC

    OUT

Oweh is no longer with the team. It does not change Oklahoma City's rotation.

  • Thomas Sorber is OUT for OKC

    OUT

Sorber is out after knee surgery. It is a known depth loss for Oklahoma City's frontcourt.

  • Brandon Ingram is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Ingram is out after heel surgery and was not expected back to start the season. Losing him takes a scorer off a Clippers roster already short several players.

  • Yanic Konan Niederhauser is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Niederhauser is out after foot surgery. It is a long absence already priced in, though it thins the Clippers' big man depth.

  • Nikola Topic is OUT for OKC

    OUT

Topic is out after back surgery. It is a long absence and only a depth note for Oklahoma City.

  • Jordan Miller is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Miller is out after shoulder surgery. It is a known absence and mostly a depth loss for the Clippers.

  • Max Strus is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Strus is out with a partially torn plantar fascia. He adds to a thin Clippers wing group tonight.

SITUATIONAL

  • OKC on 3d, LAC on 2d

    3d vs 2d

Oklahoma City has had 3 days off, the Clippers 2. One extra day is a minor edge and unlikely to matter much on its own.

    Darius Garland
    Assists under 6.5

    -115 · LOST · ACTUAL 11

    LA Clippers

Garland has been the Clippers' whole offense with Beal and Ingram out, but the job so far is scoring. Garland put up 30 and 26 while handing out 4 and 6 assists, and that was against Sacramento and the Lakers. Tonight brings the toughest ball pressure the Clippers have seen. Wallace had 4 steals and Mitchell 5 against Denver, and Caruso and Gilgeous-Alexander are on top of that. Garland coughed it up 9 times at the Lakers. Possessions that end in a turnover never become assists.

The Clippers also spread the playmaking around. Dunn had 5 assists at the Lakers, Sanders 5 off the bench, and Wagler opened with 5 against Sacramento. When OKC traps Garland, the ball swings to those three and they make the next pass. The Clippers' best chance to keep this close is Garland hunting his own shot, which pushes this toward points over assists.

Then there's the spread. I already laid 16.5 with Oklahoma City. If the game goes that way, Lue has no reason to keep Garland out there for the fourth quarter on one day's rest, and a 30-minute night makes 7 assists a stretch.

What beats it: Lopez stays hot. He went 8 for 9 at the Lakers, and if Garland's pick-and-pop passes keep going in, the assists pile up. A close game that keeps Garland on the floor for 37 minutes beats it too, and so does a night when OKC's pressure gets broken and the Clippers run.

    Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
    Points under 28.5

    -115 · LOST · ACTUAL 34

    Oklahoma City Thunder

This one comes down to minutes and game script. Oklahoma City is laying 16.5 at home and plays again tomorrow night. Gilgeous-Alexander logged 36 and 34.6 minutes in two 12-point wins. In a bigger margin the number drops. Against Denver, with the game decided, Gilgeous-Alexander asked to come out and never came back. If OKC leads by 20 after three quarters, nobody on that bench is pushing the star's minutes the night before a back-to-back.

The Thunder don't need a 30-point night to win this, either. Jalen Williams led them with 21 against Denver, McCain hit for 20 in the opener, and Mitchell, Caruso and Wallace all chip in. Their margin has come from forcing turnovers and owning possessions, and that makes the scoring spread out instead of running everything through one player.

The Clippers also have the right people to make this a grind for Gilgeous-Alexander. Dunn is one of the better point-of-attack defenders in the league, and Jones Jr. gives them length on the wing. Gilgeous-Alexander is 6 for 18 from three through two games, and the first half against Denver went 0 for 7.

What beats it: the Clippers keep it within single digits and Gilgeous-Alexander plays 36 minutes, the way the San Antonio game went with 27 shots and 32 points. The Clippers have also been fouling 21 to 24 times a game. Gilgeous-Alexander living at the line could clear this in three quarters.
