The read

Brooklyn is back at Barclays less than a day after a 125-121 loss in Cleveland. Indiana arrives with a day of rest after Dallas led by as many as 37 in Indiana's own building. The back-to-back has been in this number since it opened, and Mikel Brown Jr.'s rest was announced before Saturday's game, so neither one is the bet. Brown shot 3-10 and 2-8 in about 20 minutes a night anyway. The Nets' offense runs through Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr.

The bet is the matchup. Indiana's offense lives inside: 47-90 with only 9 threes at New Orleans, then 39-88 with 7 against Dallas. Pascal Siakam went 13-23 and 8-13, Ivica Zubac 7-12 and 4-7, and the Pacers got to the line 29 and 28 times. Brooklyn has given up 48 paint points to Charlotte and 46 to Cleveland while committing 25 and 30 fouls. Porter and Egor Dëmin both fouled out Saturday, and Day'Ron Sharpe was ejected. That's a bad combination against Siakam and Zubac.

Ball-handling is the other crack. Brooklyn turned it over 22 and 18 times. With Brown out, more of the creation falls on Dëmin and a bench Jordi Fernández is still sorting out. Chaney Johnson jumped from about 5 minutes to 27, Nolan Traoré dropped from about 16 to 5, and Josh Minott just debuted.

This isn't a hammer. Indiana has allowed 120 and 121 points, with 66 and 77 in the first half. Randle and Porter are healthy and playing big minutes, and Brooklyn made 20 threes in Cleveland. The Pacers turned it over 19 times against Dallas. Indiana's 9-30 and 7-32 from deep isn't owed a bounce, and this pick doesn't need one. Two games is a thin sample on both sides.

At 6.5, the question is whether Indiana wins by 7 or more. The schedule is priced. The paint-and-free-throw mismatch against Brooklyn's foul-prone frontcourt isn't. Small play on the Pacers.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • IND won last season's series 2-1

    2-1

Indiana won last season's series 2-1, by 8.3 a game across 3 meetings. Three games is thin. The rest edge tonight, with Brooklyn on a back-to-back, says more than this record.

REPLACEMENT

  • Johnny Furphy is OUT for IND

    OUT

Furphy is still recovering from a torn right ACL. His absence is long known and already built into Indiana's rotation.

  • T.J. McConnell is OUT for IND

    OUT

McConnell is out with a right hamstring strain. His backup minutes at guard go to Indiana's other ball handlers tonight.

SITUATIONAL

  • BKN on a back-to-back, IND rested

    B2B vs 2d

Brooklyn plays its second game in two nights while Indiana has had 2 days off. Tired teams tend to fade late and shoot worse from outside. Indiana is short T.J. McConnell, which trims its bench, so the rest edge is real but partly offset.

    Brooklyn Nets

Sharpe has scored 8 and 7 in two starts, on 4-5 and 3-10 shooting. The line sits above both. Brooklyn's offense runs through Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr., and Mikel Brown Jr. is resting tonight. Brown's shots go to Egor Dëmin, Chaney Johnson and the guards. Sharpe isn't getting called plays. Sharpe's points come off putbacks and dump-offs, and tonight Ivica Zubac is the one waiting at the rim.

Minutes cap this too. Sharpe played 30 in the opener and 23 in Cleveland before being ejected for two flagrant fouls. Brooklyn has committed 25 and 30 fouls in two games. Indiana attacks the paint with Pascal Siakam and Zubac and lives at the line, which is why I'm on the Pacers tonight. A foul-prone center on the second night of a back-to-back has a hard time reaching 11. Moritz Wagner and Noah Clowney are right there to take those minutes.

What beats it: offensive rebounds. Brooklyn grabbed 18 in Cleveland, and Sharpe has pulled 8 boards in each game. A few putbacks and a couple of trips to the line get this over without a single play run for Sharpe. Zubac getting into early foul trouble would also hurt this, because Sharpe would get a softer matchup and a longer night.

    Indiana Pacers

Brooklyn misses a lot of shots. The Nets went 36-80 against Charlotte and 39-98 in Cleveland, and 49 of Saturday's attempts were threes. That creates a steady supply of long rebounds. Tonight the Nets are also on the second night of a back-to-back, when tired legs tend to leave jumpers short. Zubac pulled 15 rebounds in 34 minutes at New Orleans and 11 in under 24 against Dallas. Indiana trailed that Dallas game by as many as 37, so the starters' night ended early.

Brooklyn's frontcourt helps too. Day'Ron Sharpe is the Nets' main presence on the glass. Sharpe has struggled with fouls and was ejected Saturday after two flagrants. When Sharpe sits, Brooklyn goes to Moritz Wagner or Noah Clowney, and neither battles Zubac for position the same way. At plus money, Zubac needs 12 after clearing that number in the full-minutes game and coming within one in the short one.

What beats it: Brooklyn crashing the offensive glass like it did in Cleveland, where it grabbed 18 offensive rebounds. Those come straight out of Zubac's total. Siakam and Jarace Walker also take their share of defensive boards. If Indiana pulls away the way I think it can, Zubac could sit for most of the fourth quarter. Foul trouble for Zubac would cut the minutes too.
