The read

Two unbeaten teams meet Sunday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Philadelphia is 3-0 and playing for the second straight night, while Detroit is 2-0 and comes in rested. The market has made Philly's schedule the main story. I think the bigger story is who Detroit is missing.

Philly's tough spot is real, and it's already in the price. This is the second night of a back-to-back and the third game in four nights. Joel Embiid sits for plantar fasciitis management after playing 36 minutes Saturday, Jabari Walker is out, and Adem Bona is the only healthy true center. That's why a 3-0 home team is getting points.

What the price may not fully reflect is that Detroit is down two starters. Jalen Duren (hamstring) is exactly the player who would have punished a thin Sixers frontcourt that allowed 17 offensive rebounds to Milwaukee and 14 to New York. Without Duren, it's Paul Reed against Bona, which is an even matchup. Ausar Thompson (ankle) went from Questionable to Out on the 6:00 PM report, and Thompson is Detroit's best option against Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown. Ron Holland II is a reasonable fill-in, but Detroit's defense on Philly's top two scorers gets worse.

Philly keeps its three main creators, and the returning one is the freshest. LeBron James is back after resting Saturday. Embiid's shots go to Maxey (28, 32, 26 points) and Brown (19, 21, 27), not to the end of the bench. Ball security is another edge: Detroit has turned it over 17 and 19 times, while Cleveland and Milwaukee gave it away 21 and 22 times against Philly.

The risks are real. Maxey has played 40, 42 and 36 minutes, and tired legs could produce another sloppy first half like the one against Cleveland. VJ Edgecombe is questionable with an abdominal contusion. Detroit's bench outscored Miami's 64-39. And I'm not counting on Duncan Robinson's five threes a game continuing, or on them stopping.

At 1.5, Philly covers with any win or a one-point loss. With LeBron back at home and Detroit missing the two players best built to exploit this spot, I'll take the points. It's a small play, and if Edgecombe is ruled out, most of the edge goes away.

    -110 · CASHED · ACTUAL 29

    Philadelphia 76ers

Tyrese Maxey Over 26.5 points at -110.

Joel Embiid is out, and that matters more for this prop than anything else on the injury report. Embiid took 20 shots Saturday and 15 or 16 in each of the first two games, and he was the reason Philly got to the line. Those possessions don't go to Adem Bona. Maxey is the primary ball handler, and he has already scored 28, 32 and 26 with Embiid sharing the ball. This line sits below what he has been producing in a role that is about to get bigger.

The matchup helps him too. Ausar Thompson is out, so Detroit loses the one wing it would trust to chase Maxey for 35 minutes. That leaves Ron Holland II, Isaiah Joe, Kevin Huerter and Duncan Robinson to take turns, and Robinson in particular is someone Philly will hunt in pick and roll. Detroit has also turned the ball over 17 and 19 times in two games, and Maxey's speed in transition is where he gets easy points. Philly has shot 27, 30 and 34 free throws, and with fewer post touches for Embiid, more of those trips should come from Maxey attacking downhill.

What beats it: legs. This is the second night of a back-to-back and the third game in four nights, and he logged 42 minutes Thursday. If his jumper is short early, he could be inefficient on heavy volume. LeBron James is back, and he will run some of the offense himself, which could cut into Maxey's touches. A lopsided score either way could also sit him for most of the fourth quarter. I'm betting on volume, and the volume should be there.

    Paul Reed
    Rebounds over 9.5

    -103 · LOST · ACTUAL 8

    Detroit Pistons

Paul Reed Over 9.5 rebounds at -103.

With Jalen Duren out, Reed becomes Detroit's center. Once Duren left Friday in Miami, Reed played 26 minutes and grabbed 11 rebounds. Detroit has nobody else it really wants at the five. Tolu Smith has played two garbage time minutes this year, so beyond Reed the plan is John Collins playing small. That should put Reed in the low 30s in minutes if he stays out of foul trouble.

Philly's frontcourt is in bad shape. Embiid, Jabari Walker, Ariel Hukporti and Tacko Fall are all out. That leaves Bona as the only true center, with LeBron and Dean Wade filling in. With Embiid on the floor, Philly still gave up 17 offensive rebounds to Milwaukee and 14 to New York. Now they're without him on the second night of a back-to-back, and tired teams box out poorly. Detroit has crashed hard all season with 14 and 12 offensive boards. Philly has also missed plenty of shots, roughly 50 a night, so Reed will see a lot of chances on the defensive glass.

What beats it: fouls first. Reed has always played aggressively, and if he picks up two fouls early, Detroit goes small and his minutes disappear. That is how he ended up playing only 16 minutes against Boston. Bona's length and leaping can take some boards away, and LeBron is a strong defensive rebounder who will be fresh after resting Saturday. A lot of Philly's misses come from three, and long rebounds can go to guards like Cade Cunningham and Holland instead of the center. If the minutes are there, I like the over.
