The read
Nikola Jokić opens Denver's season on ESPN at Paycom Center, where Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder are already 1-0 after a 12-point win in San Antonio. The number has been Oklahoma City -8.5 since Tuesday morning, and nothing since has budged it.
That stillness says plenty. The line opened before the Thunder beat the Spurs 116-104, and before Julian Strawther was ruled out and Spencer Jones listed questionable. The market saw all of it and stayed put, treating the opener as one game and Strawther as a bench piece. Right on both counts.
Don't lean on Tuesday. Oklahoma City shot 14-for-31 from three, Victor Wembanyama went 1-for-13, and Jared McCain hit 6 of 8 threes days after an 0-for-8 preseason night in Houston where the team went 5-for-36. Shooting like that swings margins both ways. Denver's 3-2 preseason means about as little, and a day between games for the Thunder is ordinary scheduling.
What matters is the shape of the minutes. Denver brings back the same starting five from a 54-28 team: Murray, Braun, Johnson, Gordon and Jokić. Oklahoma City kept its core three but lost Lu Dort, Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins, and is still sorting out who defends, who shoots and who connects. Holmgren was brilliant on Wembanyama, but Jokić is a different puzzle, with passing out of help, rebounding and punishing rotations.
The Thunder's real edge is the stretch when Jokić sits. Denver's bench is rebuilt around DeMar DeRozan, Tyus Jones and Marvin Bagley III, while Oklahoma City's reserves just outscored San Antonio's 48-29. That's where a Thunder cover would get built. But David Adelman has floated a nine-man rotation, and in an opener against the West's best, expect Jokić and Murray to carry heavy minutes. That caps how long those new units are exposed.
Most of this game is an intact Denver five against a reshaped Thunder five, and that's the matchup most likely to play tight. At 8.5, I'd rather be holding the points.
The risk is plain: if the DeRozan-Jones-Bagley groups bleed early, this gets away. Late news limiting Jokić or Murray would flip me. Short of that, Denver plus the points.

The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
OKC won last season's series 3-1
3-1Oklahoma City won last season's series 3-1, but by only 0.3 a game across 4 meetings. That is about as close as a series gets, so the 3-1 record says less than it seems. Tonight is the first meeting this season, and the margins suggest these two play tight games.
REPLACEMENT
Thomas Sorber is OUT for OKC
OUTSorber is out after right knee surgery, and he was already listed out the day before. This was expected, so the line should already account for it. The main question is who absorbs his frontcourt minutes for Oklahoma City.
Nikola Topic is OUT for OKC
OUTTopic will not play after low back surgery, and that was reported the day before. It is a known absence, so expect it to be priced in. It mostly affects Oklahoma City's guard depth rather than the top of the rotation.
Otega Oweh is OUT for OKC
OUTOweh is out after right Achilles surgery, reported in mid October. This is a long-term absence and should already be built into Oklahoma City's rotation and the number.
Julian Strawther is OUT for DEN
OUTStrawther is out with a left knee sprain diagnosed last week. That takes a wing out of Denver's bench rotation for the opener, which can push more minutes to the starters and whoever is next up.
Spencer Jones is Questionable for DEN
QuestionableJones is questionable with a hamstring issue on both legs. With Strawther already out, Denver's depth is thin on the wing if Jones sits too. Wait for the final status before backing anything tied to Denver's bench minutes.
SITUATIONAL
DEN opens its season
OPENERThis is Denver's first game, and Oklahoma City comes in on 2 days rest with a game already played. The Thunder have a small head start on rhythm. Early-season lines lean heavily on last year, so expect some noise.

2- GARY'S PICKNIKOLA JOKICPOINTS REBOUNDS ASSISTS OVER 46.5
This line sits well below where Jokić lived last season, when he averaged 27.7 points, 12.9 rebounds and 10.7 assists. I'm also expecting him to carry a big load tonight.
Start with the minutes. Denver's bench is new from top to bottom: DeRozan, Tyus Jones and Bagley have never played a regular-season game together. Adelman has talked about a nine-man rotation, and in an opener on ESPN against the defending top seed, the fastest way to steady those reserve groups is to keep them short. My side read on this game is that it stays within the number, and a close game keeps Jokić on the floor through the fourth quarter. That points to something close to a 40-minute night.
The combined number also takes the sting out of Oklahoma City's defense. Holmgren just locked up Wembanyama, and Hartenstein knows how to body Jokić. When they take away his scoring, the help comes and Jokić turns it into assists for Murray, Johnson and Braun. When they stay home and play him straight, he scores over them. Oklahoma City can push his production from one column into another, but over a full night it is very hard to shrink the total. On the glass, the Thunder lost Dort's physicality on the perimeter, and Hartenstein played only 17 minutes on Tuesday while the rookie Mara learned drop coverage on the fly. That leaves more defensive rebounds for Jokić.
What beats it: a game that gets away early in either direction and sends him to the bench in the fourth, or foul trouble from the Thunder's size. The other risk is Denver's shooters going cold, which turns good passes into empty possessions.
- GARY'S PICKJALEN WILLIAMSPOINTS UNDER 18.5
This number prices Jalen Williams as the clear second scorer. That is not how Oklahoma City's offense looked on Tuesday.
In San Antonio he took a back seat. Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32, McCain added 20 off the bench, and Mitchell ran the second unit with six assists. Williams played 30 minutes and finished with 12 points, contributing more on the glass than as a scorer. With Dort, Joe and Wiggins gone, Daigneault is spreading touches around to find out who can shoot and create. A hot McCain and a busy Mitchell come straight out of the possessions that used to go to Williams.
The matchup does not open things up for him either. Denver can put Christian Braun or Aaron Gordon on him, and Gordon is strong enough to keep him out of the lane where he does most of his work. Shai will draw most of Denver's attention, and Williams gets the cleaner look. A cleaner look is still a contested midrange shot against a big wing, though, and that type of shot does not usually add up to 19 points. His last season was broken up by injury, and even then his scoring stayed below this mark. I think the line is built on his reputation more than on his current role.
What beats it: Oklahoma City's bench shooting cooling off, which would push the offense back onto him. The same goes for Denver trapping Shai hard enough that Williams becomes the main creator for long stretches. A tight game that keeps the starters on the floor late also gives him more chances to get there.
