The read

LeBron James and Jaylen Brown make their Philadelphia home debuts tonight, two days after the Sixers beat the champs on ring night. Cleveland opens its season in a building that will be loud from the jump. The number is Philadelphia -2.5, and I'm taking the points with the Cavaliers.

Start with how the line got here. It opened at -2.5 before the Knicks game, moved to -3.5 the day after that win, and was back to -2.5 by Thursday afternoon. The market tried a bigger price on Philly's opener and didn't keep it. That 106-100 win was impressive, but it was one game. The Sixers went 11-for-40 from three, Joel Embiid went 4-for-15, and one strong defensive night isn't a defense yet. Cleveland's 1-2 preseason doesn't count for much either.

What does count is where this matchup hits. Philly's thinnest spot is center behind Embiid: - Ariel Hukporti, Tacko Fall and Dominick Barlow are out. - Adem Bona struggled against Andre Drummond. - Nick Nurse ended up using Jabari Walker, and even LeBron, at center.

Cleveland can play two real bigs in Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, with Thomas Bryant behind them. Every Sixers starter played at least 33 minutes Tuesday, in a rotation described as about seven and a half deep. At a short number, those bench center minutes are where the margin can swing.

Cleveland also brings continuity. The core of last season's conference-finals team is back. James Harden has had a full camp next to Donovan Mitchell and Mobley. Peyton Watson and Mario Hezonja join a group that already knows how it plays. Philly is still fitting two new stars into a unit that has played one game together.

The risk is Allen, who is questionable with right patellar tendinopathy. The frontcourt edge is most of this case, and with Khalifa Diop out, there's less depth behind Allen. If Allen is ruled out late, most of the edge goes away. With Allen in uniform, Cleveland plus the points is the better side of this number.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • CLE won last season's series 4-0

    4-0

Cleveland swept Philadelphia last season and won by 13.3 a game across 4 meetings. That is a lopsided series, but it is 4 games from a different season, and tonight is the first meeting with new rosters and a fresh injury report. Use it as a sign of how the matchup went last year, then check who is actually playing tonight before putting weight on it.

REPLACEMENT

  • Dominick Barlow is OUT for PHI

    OUT

Barlow is out with a low back stress reaction, and earlier reporting said he would miss at least two weeks. That makes this a longer absence, so Philadelphia's frontcourt minutes get spread around for a stretch. Look at who picks up his rotation spot, since that player's role can be underpriced in the first games.

  • Nae'Qwan Tomlin is OUT for CLE

    OUT

Tomlin is out with a low back stress reaction, and earlier reporting had him missing several weeks. This is a stretch absence, so the minutes he would have played go to someone else on Cleveland's bench for a while.

  • Ariel Hukporti is OUT for PHI

    OUT

Hukporti is out with a right Achilles rupture, reported back in early October. That is a long-term injury, so his absence is part of Philadelphia's baseline now. It also thins the center spot alongside the other frontcourt players out tonight.

  • Tacko Fall is OUT for PHI

    OUT

Fall is out with a left quadriceps strain. Together with Barlow and Hukporti also out, Philadelphia is short on bigs tonight. That can matter for rebounding and for whoever ends up playing center minutes.

  • Khalifa Diop is OUT for CLE

    OUT

Diop is out with what is listed as left knee injury management, reported the day before. It is a depth absence for Cleveland's frontcourt, and with Jarrett Allen questionable, the center rotation could get thin. Check Allen's status before the game.

  • Jarrett Allen is Questionable for CLE

    Questionable

Allen is questionable with right patellar tendinopathy. With Diop already out, Allen's status matters for Cleveland's size, especially against a Philadelphia team short on bigs. If he plays, Cleveland should have the edge inside. If he sits, that edge shrinks.

  • Dean Wade is Questionable for PHI

    Questionable

Wade is questionable with a left ankle sprain, the same status reported the day before. A questionable tag on opening night can go either way, so check the final report before game time.

SITUATIONAL

  • CLE opens its season

    OPENER

This is Cleveland's first game, while Philadelphia comes in on 2 days rest, which means the Sixers already have a game behind them. Openers can look sloppy as rotations settle, so early lines carry more guesswork than usual.

    EVAN MOBLEYREBOUNDS OVER 8.5
    NBACleveland Cavaliers· -115

    Evan Mobley
    Rebounds over 8.5

    -115 · LOST · ACTUAL 8

    Cleveland Cavaliers

My side in this game is Cleveland plus the points, and most of that case is the frontcourt. Mobley over 8.5 rebounds at -115 is the most direct way to bet the same idea at the player level.

Philadelphia has almost nothing at center behind Joel Embiid. Ariel Hukporti, Tacko Fall and Dominick Barlow are all out. Adem Bona got pushed around by Andre Drummond on Tuesday, and Nick Nurse ended up using Jabari Walker and even LeBron James in the middle. Every minute Embiid sits, Mobley is boxing out a forward playing out of position. Embiid also logged 33 minutes on Tuesday, and this is Philly's second game in three nights.

The Jarrett Allen question doesn't hurt this bet. If Allen plays, Cleveland runs two real bigs at a short Sixers rotation and the glass tilts their way. If Allen sits, Mobley moves to center and the rebounds Allen would have taken come to him, with only Thomas Bryant behind him and Khalifa Diop out.

The total has also moved up from 236.5 to 237.5. Philadelphia played fast in its opener and shot 11-for-40 from three, and long misses from a team still finding its spacing mean more boards. Mobley comes in off a camp where Kenny Atkinson called him elite, and the Harden pick and roll keeps him around the rim, which puts him in rebounding position on both ends.

What beats it: Embiid plays heavy minutes and controls the defensive glass himself, Allen plays and takes the boards that would have gone to Mobley, or Cleveland shoots well enough that there isn't much to clean up. A lopsided game that sends the starters to the bench early would also cap it.

  • GARY'S PICK
    TYRESE MAXEYPOINTS OVER 23.5
    NBAPhiladelphia 76ers· +100

    Tyrese Maxey
    Points over 23.5

    +100 · CASHED · ACTUAL 32

    Philadelphia 76ers

The market set Maxey's number at 23.5 at even money, which leans hard on the idea that LeBron James, Jaylen Brown and Joel Embiid will take shots away from him. On Tuesday, with all three on the floor, he scored 28 on a night when his team couldn't shoot.

Minutes are the base of this bet. Nurse ran about seven and a half deep in the opener, and Maxey played 40. Nothing suggests that changes in the home opener against a team Philly hasn't separated from yet. With a short spread, the starters should be out there late.

The matchup helps him. James Harden and Donovan Mitchell are Cleveland's lead creators and nobody's first choice to chase Maxey through screens for 40 minutes. Cleveland gave up a lot of points across its preseason, and its transition coverage was a concern all camp. Philadelphia scored 24 fast break points in New York, and Maxey is the one who pushes it. In a game totaled near 238, he should get plenty of chances in the open floor before Cleveland's defense gets set.

He's also the release valve when the other stars stall. Embiid went 4-for-15 and LeBron was 5-for-13 on Tuesday, and Maxey was the one who kept the offense going. If either has another off night, those shots go to Maxey.

What beats it: Cleveland blitzes the Maxey and Embiid pick and roll the way New York did and forces the ball out of his hands, Embiid bounces back and takes over the scoring load, or Peyton Watson draws the assignment and his length takes away Maxey's pull up. His outside shooting runs hot and cold, and tired legs on the second game in three nights could leave him short.
