The read
The banner goes up at Madison Square Garden tonight, and the defending champions open their title defense against a 76ers team rebuilt over the summer around Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, LeBron James and Joel Embiid. Philadelphia has plenty of talent, but I'm betting on the side that already knows who it is.
Philadelphia's starting five shared roughly one half of basketball in the preseason. What we did see came with warning signs I can measure. In the finale, the starters committed 14 turnovers against a Boston team missing most of its regulars, and Nick Nurse called some of that passing careless. Defensive rebounding was a recurring weak spot all preseason, and Nurse himself called New York a really good offensive rebounding team. Giveaways and second chances allowed are the leaks that matter most when the question is whether an unfamiliar group can stay inside a number on the road.
The bigger edge for me is what happens when the Sixers' stars sit. Reporting points to keeping James and Embiid around 30 minutes a night early on. Behind Embiid, the center spot runs through Adem Bona, who missed all of preseason with a foot sprain and would play limited minutes if cleared, or Jabari Walker playing out of position. New York arrives with no injuries and Josh Hart back in the lineup. Its bench is built around Andre Drummond, who posted 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists in just over 15 minutes of the finale, alongside Miles McBride, Jose Alvarado, Landry Shamet and Jordan Clarkson. Yes, the Knicks' preseason offense ranked 28th and they gave up 41 points in a fourth quarter, but exhibition fourth quarters tell me very little. I'll lay -4.5 with a fully healthy team at home against one still learning its rotation.

The research

HEAD-TO-HEAD
NYK won last season's series 6-2
6-2The Knicks beat Philadelphia six times in eight tries last season, and the average margin of 15.1 points means most of those were not close. That is eight games of real evidence, but rosters and health change over a summer, and tonight is the first look at both teams. Last season's gap is a starting point for how this matchup has gone, and the opener will show whether it carries over.
REPLACEMENT
Dominick Barlow is OUT for PHI
OUTBarlow missed the entire preseason with a back issue and now starts the regular season on the sidelines. He joins Ariel Hukporti and Tacko Fall on Philadelphia's out list for tonight in New York. With no game reps since the summer, his return date is open, so his minutes go to whoever else is healthy in the frontcourt rotation.
Tacko Fall is OUT for PHI
OUTFall sits out the opener with the same injury that kept him out all preseason. He is one of several Philadelphia absences tonight, alongside Dominick Barlow and Ariel Hukporti. As a deep reserve, his absence matters mostly when combined with the other frontcourt players out.
Ariel Hukporti is OUT for PHI
OUTHukporti ruptured his Achilles in the preseason opener against these same Knicks, so he is out long term. It adds to a thin Philadelphia frontcourt tonight, which matters for rebounding and for whoever picks up the backup center minutes.
Anfernee Simons is Day-To-Day for PHI
Day-To-DaySimons got through a full practice Sunday, but Philadelphia has not committed to him for the opener. Full practice is a good sign, so lean toward him playing, but confirm before tip. Philadelphia already has Dominick Barlow, Ariel Hukporti and Tacko Fall out, so a Simons absence would thin the roster further.
Adem Bona is Day-To-Day for PHI
Day-To-DayBona missed the preseason with a foot issue but got in a full practice Sunday, so he looks to be trending toward playing. With Ariel Hukporti, Tacko Fall and Dominick Barlow out, Philadelphia's frontcourt is thin, and Bona's status matters more than usual. If he plays after no preseason games, his minutes could be limited.
Dean Wade is Day-To-Day for PHI
Day-To-DayWade has missed back-to-back practices, which points to him sitting despite the day-to-day tag. Justin Edwards and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope are named as the players who would absorb his role. Bettors following Philadelphia's wings should watch whether that extra playing time goes to them.
SITUATIONAL
Season opener for both teams
OPENERPhiladelphia and New York both open tonight, so rest is even. With no games played yet, last season's results and injury reports carry more weight than usual. Philadelphia comes in with three players out and several more listed day to day.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKKARL-ANTHONY TOWNSREBOUNDS OVER 11.5
Philadelphia's biggest problem in preseason was finishing possessions on the defensive glass. Nick Nurse came into this game calling the Knicks a really good offensive rebounding team. Karl-Anthony Towns is the player who cashes that weakness. He closed preseason with 15 rebounds against Toronto, and last season he averaged right at this number in about 31 minutes a night.
The matchup tilts further his way tonight. Nurse has talked through putting Joel Embiid on Josh Hart and sliding a smaller defender onto Towns. That would leave Towns boxing out a wing or a 41-year-old LeBron James. If Embiid takes him straight up, Embiid is still expected to play around 30 minutes. Behind him, the Sixers have Adem Bona, coming off a foot sprain with no preseason reps, or Jabari Walker playing center out of position.
Mike Brown also wants Towns on the floor with Jalen Brunson more often. That keeps him in the starters' minutes and away from sharing the paint with Andre Drummond. An unfamiliar Philadelphia group that turns the ball over and loses track of bodies on the back line is a good opponent for a big who lives on the glass. At even money, I'll take the over.
What beats it: foul trouble, or a lopsided fourth quarter that sends him to the bench early. It also loses on a night when Towns spends most of his possessions spotting up on the perimeter while Drummond soaks up the minutes and the boards around him.
- GARY'S PICKJOEL EMBIIDPOINTS OVER 22.5
Joel Embiid said after the preseason finale that he is against the concept of sacrificing. Nick Nurse closed the week saying he wants his players to be who they are. Against Boston, who Embiid is looked like 27 points in 29 minutes, 7 of 13 from the floor and 11 of 13 at the line. The full starting five played that night, so sharing the floor with LeBron James and Jaylen Brown did not shrink his scoring.
The Knicks no longer have Mitchell Robinson to throw at him. Towns gets the first crack, and Embiid has always been comfortable drawing contact against him. The next man up is Andre Drummond, who plays shallow drop and gives an aggressive post scorer room to face up and get into his body. Every whistle sends Embiid to the line, which is how this number gets made on nights when the jumper is off.
LeBron running the offense helps too, since he will find Embiid in the post and as the trailer in transition. Even with a workload near 30 minutes, a 22.5 line sits below what Embiid produced in that time last season. I'll take the over.
What beats it: the Knicks sending hard doubles that turn him into a passer, or a quiet whistle in a road opener. A game that gets away early enough for Nurse to sit him in the fourth would also do it.
