The read
Opening night at Frost Bank Center, and the schedule hands us a Western Conference Finals rematch on national TV, with the Thunder walking in to face the team that ended their season. The market has made Oklahoma City a road favorite at a coin-flip price. The moneylines sit at -110 and -106, which rates the Thunder roughly a home-court edge better on a neutral floor. I don't see the evidence for that edge tonight. San Antonio returns its top ten scorers. Oklahoma City lost several established perimeter players this offseason, and those minutes now go to Ajay Mitchell and Jared McCain.
The preparation picture backs that up. Two of Oklahoma City's projected starters missed the final three preseason games, and one of them never played at all. That means the Thunder's opening five hasn't shared the floor in a game this fall. The guards taking on the extra minutes went a combined 6-for-23 in the final tune-up, including 0-for-12 from three, in a 27-point loss at Houston. That's a small sample, but those minutes still have to be played tonight. San Antonio's new starting group got two full run-throughs and won both, 123-103 and 126-97. In the finale, Dylan Harper scored 19 on 7-of-12 shooting in about 20 minutes. Behind the starters, the Spurs bring back Keldon Johnson, the reigning Sixth Man of the Year. Carter Bryant, meanwhile, hit 4-of-7 from three against Phoenix. In a game priced this tight, the non-star minutes often decide it, and San Antonio's are the more settled ones.
The risk is real, and I'm pricing it in. The three-guard look puts the 6'5" Devin Vassell at power forward across from a 7-footer. Its entire sample is two preseason games, one of them against a Suns team resting all its starters. San Antonio's offseason was also a full Finals series shorter. The -120 is a tax, too: the extra point and a half only covers a one-point loss. But this is a near pick'em, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams are working with a supporting cast still sorting out its minutes. I'll take the home team with the deeper, more continuous rotation, and the market is barely asking me to pay for it. Spurs +1.5.

The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
SAS won last season's series 8-4
8-4San Antonio took eight of twelve meetings last season, but the average margin was only 4.3 points, so most games were within a couple of possessions. Twelve games is a solid sample for a head-to-head. The series record looks lopsided, but the scoring margins describe two teams that played each other close.
REPLACEMENT
Thomas Sorber is OUT for OKC
OUTSorber has no firm timeline for his debut after offseason knee surgery, so this absence could stretch past tonight. Oklahoma City is also without Nikola Topic and Otega Oweh for the opener in San Antonio. For a bettor, his absence is a known quantity already built into the roster the Thunder use to start the season.
Nikola Topic is OUT for OKC
OUTTopic has no concrete timetable for his debut after offseason back surgery and projects as backcourt depth once healthy. That makes his absence more about rotation depth than the top of Oklahoma City's lineup. He is one of three Thunder players out tonight, with Thomas Sorber and Otega Oweh.
Jayden Quaintance is OUT for SAS
OUTQuaintance tore his ACL and meniscus at Arizona State, and San Antonio is expected to be very cautious with him. That points to a long absence. Tobias Harris is also out for the Spurs tonight against Oklahoma City, so the Spurs' frontcourt depth is thinner than a full roster would suggest.
Tobias Harris is OUT for SAS
OUTCoach Mitch Johnson says Harris is ramping up but still needs more work on the court, so he is close but not ready. He joins Jayden Quaintance on San Antonio's out list for the opener against Oklahoma City. His comments suggest a short absence, so his return is something to check before upcoming Spurs games.
Otega Oweh is OUT for OKC
OUTOweh ruptured his right Achilles in a non-contact play during a preseason game against the Pacers, which is a long-term injury. Oklahoma City is also without Thomas Sorber and Nikola Topic tonight. His absence trims the Thunder's depth for the whole season.
SITUATIONAL
Season opener for both teams
OPENEROklahoma City and San Antonio both open their season tonight, so there is no rest advantage either way. Both teams are missing players, the Thunder three and the Spurs two. The difference in this game is more likely to come from those absences than from fatigue.

1- GARY'S PICKDEVIN VASSELLPOINTS UNDER 11.5
The new starting lineup costs Devin Vassell shots. Last season he scored 13.6 a night as the fourth option next to De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Victor Wembanyama, with a non-scoring forward beside him. That forward spot now belongs to Dylan Harper, who dropped 19 in about 20 minutes in the preseason finale and is the player the league's GMs expect to break out. That gives San Antonio three ball handlers and Wembanyama in front of Vassell, and Keldon Johnson, the reigning Sixth Man of the Year, coming off the bench looking for his own shots. Even as the fourth option, Vassell spent the playoffs hovering right at this number: 12, 18, 11, 14, 9, 11, 12, 6, 13 and 20. As the fifth option, the line looks a little high.
His defensive assignment drains him too. At power forward he spends the night on Chet Holmgren, fighting a 7-footer on box outs and chasing him off screens. That workload tends to show up in a wing's legs late in games, and it puts his shots more on the catch and less on his own terms. In the preseason finale he finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists: useful work in every column, and a scoring total that only barely clears this line.
What beats it is the open corner three. Three guards attacking the paint will collapse Oklahoma City's defense, and Vassell is the shooter waiting where the help comes from. The Thunder's perimeter defense is also thinner without Lu Dort. If he hits four threes, this is over by himself. And with Tobias Harris out, the starters could log heavy minutes in a close game. I'll pay the -120 and bet that the shot count shrinks.
