The read

It's opening night at Little Caesars Arena, with an afternoon tip on national TV: last year's top seed in the East hosts a Celtics team that rebuilt its top end over the summer. The line is close to a coin flip, so the question is which team brings the more durable edge into a game this tight. I keep landing on Boston, starting with the three-point math. Last season Boston attempted 42.1 threes per game to Detroit's 30.9, a gap of more than 11 attempts that doesn't depend on who's hot on a given night. Detroit's offseason moves targeted spacing. But apart from Duncan Robinson, who made 220 threes at 41%, the shooting around Cade Cunningham is still unproven. Reporting calls Ausar Thompson's jumper unproven, and Jalen Duren does his work inside.

The second piece is what Boston did last year without its best player for most of the season. The Celtics posted a +8.1 net rating while Jayson Tatum played only 16 regular-season games. Tatum starts from day one this season, with Paul George on the other wing and Derrick White running the offense. White made First Team All-Defense and averaged 5.4 assists against 1.7 turnovers. In the two preseason games the starters played, Boston forced turnovers on 24.8% of possessions. Detroit is handing more ball-handling to Thompson, so that pressure matters here. The exhibition sample is small, but it fits the personnel. Boston also outrebounded Philadelphia 63-34 with 19 offensive boards, so Detroit can't count on an edge on the glass.

Detroit deserves respect. The Cunningham-Duren-Thompson core is intact, the team ranked second in defensive rating last season, and opening night at home is a real advantage. My side carries documented risks too. Boston went 16-17 in clutch games last season with a clutch net rating of just +1.9, and Mitchell Robinson's 40.8% free-throw shooting is a late-game liability if this comes down to the final minutes. But at -1.5 I'm laying almost nothing. I'd rather back the team with more three-point volume, more ball-handlers who can create (Payton Pritchard averaged 17 points and 5.2 assists off the bench), and the bigger talent upgrade from last season than pay for Detroit's continuity at a number that doesn't reward it. Celtics.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • DET won last season's series 3-1

    3-1

Detroit won three of four against Boston last season, but the average margin was just 2.8 points. Four games is a thin sample and those were close, so the series record says more about tight finishes than a clear gap between the teams.

REPLACEMENT

  • Devin Carter is OUT for BOS

    OUT

Carter missed Boston's last three preseason games with an illness and is expected to miss time to begin the regular season. An illness usually means a shorter absence than an injury, so his status is worth checking game to game. For tonight in Detroit, his minutes go to the rest of the Celtics' guard rotation.

  • Taurean Prince is Day-To-Day for DET

    Day-To-Day

Prince is dealing with a personal matter and may not join Detroit for the opener. Even if he does, he may not play meaningful minutes. That makes him a low-impact factor for tonight's game against Boston, so plan around Detroit's usual rotation without him.

SITUATIONAL

  • Season opener for both teams

    OPENER

Both Boston and Detroit open their season tonight, so neither has a schedule edge. Openers come with no regular-season games to judge, and rotations can be uneven. Boston is without Devin Carter and Detroit may be without Taurean Prince, so injury news matters more here than rest.

    DERRICK WHITEPOINTS UNDER 15.5
    NBABoston Celtics· -115

    Derrick White
    Points under 15.5

    -115 · LOST · ACTUAL 17

    Boston Celtics

Derrick White under 15.5 points at -115. White averaged 16 points last season, and most of that came while Jayson Tatum was out of the lineup for all but a handful of games. That number came from a team that needed White to be a scorer. This team doesn't. Tatum starts from the opening tip, Paul George slides in on the other wing, and Payton Pritchard comes off the bench as a shot-hunter who scored 25 in the preseason win over Philadelphia. White's job in this group is to bring it up, start the action and make the next read. He does that as well as any guard in the league, and very little of it shows up in the scoring column.

The late stretch of last season already showed this. White was playing big minutes and still scoring in single digits or low double figures most nights, because his shot had cooled and the ball was going elsewhere. Now he's facing a Detroit defense that ranked second in the league last year, at home, on opening night, with Ausar Thompson and Ron Holland available to chase guards around screens. When Boston needs a bucket here, the ball goes to Tatum or George.

What beats this is a hot night from deep. White can catch fire. He closed last season with a five-three, 26-point game, and Boston's volume from three means he'll get open looks when Detroit collapses on Tatum's drives. If four or five of those go in, the under is gone early. I'll take that risk against a line priced on a scoring role that White no longer has.

  • GARY'S PICK
    CADE CUNNINGHAMASSISTS UNDER 8.5
    NBADetroit Pistons· +105

    Cade Cunningham
    Assists under 8.5

    +105 · CASHED · ACTUAL 8

    Detroit Pistons

Cade Cunningham under 8.5 assists at +105. The biggest story out of Detroit's camp is that Cunningham isn't the only one running the offense anymore. Ausar Thompson brought the ball up throughout the preseason and made reads out of screening actions. Jalen Duren worked as a hub, running dribble handoffs and even an inverted pick-and-roll. Ebuka Okorie ran the offense down the stretch of multiple preseason games. Every one of those possessions is a set where Cunningham isn't the one making the final pass.

The matchup pushes the same way. Boston can throw a lot of length at a lead guard. Jordan Walsh has earned the starting spot because he guards the opponent's best player, White is First Team All-Defense, and Tatum and George are rotating behind them. In the two preseason games Boston's starters played, the defense jumped passing lanes constantly. Cunningham's assist counts were already uneven late last season, with plenty of nights in the fives and sixes. A Detroit roster that shoots far fewer threes than Boston also gives him fewer kick-out passes to convert.

What beats this is volume. Cunningham will play a ton of minutes in a game priced as a coin flip, and if Duncan Robinson gets loose and John Collins hits his corner threes and finishes lobs, the assists stack up fast. He has double-digit games in him any night. At plus money, though, I like the side that fits how Detroit spent its preseason spreading out the creation.
