Gary's Take This spread is a massive over-correction based on two extreme statistical outliers from last Saturday. The market is pricing this game as if the Utah Jazz are a historical disaster after their 55-point loss to Charlotte, while simultaneously treating the Cleveland Cavaliers as an unstoppable juggernaut following their 146-point explosion against Minnesota. In thirty years of betting, I have learned that the best time to back a professional team is immediately after they have been thoroughly embarrassed. This is the 'Dead Cat Bounce' in its purest form; the Jazz are facing a 'pride check' tonight, and NBA teams almost always respond with a high-intensity defensive effort after a humiliation of that magnitude.
Cleveland is walking into a classic letdown spot. After playing their most efficient game of the season against a top-tier Timberwolves defense, it is nearly impossible to maintain that level of focus and shooting accuracy, especially against an opponent the public has already written off. While Donovan Mitchell is playing elite basketball, the Cavaliers are likely to experience significant offensive regression. When a team exhales after a big win, they often struggle to put away a motivated underdog, and a 13.5-point spread provides an enormous amount of room for error.
The pace of this game also favors the underdog side of the spread. Both teams rank in the top ten for pace of play, which creates more possessions and increases the likelihood of high-scoring variance. In a high-possession environment, a double-digit lead is never safe from garbage-time compression. Even if Cleveland controls the game, Utah’s bench—led by Brice Sensabaugh and Kyle Filipowski—is productive enough to chip away at the lead in the closing minutes to secure a cover.
Lauri Markkanen remains a matchup nightmare for any frontcourt, and his ability to pull Cleveland's rim protectors away from the basket will open up driving lanes for Keyonte George and Collin Sexton. While the Jazz may not have the defensive consistency to win this game outright on the road, they have more than enough offensive talent to keep the final margin within three or four possessions. I am betting on professional pride and market regression here. Utah Jazz +13.5.
Injuries noted
Utah Jazz: Georges Niang (Out) — Niang has yet to make his season debut as he recovers from a fourth metatarsal stress reaction in his left foot and remains without a timetable for a return. The veteran forward should be considered week-to-week until the Jazz offer an update on his progress.; Walker Kessler (Out For Season) — This is a devastating blow for the Jazz and for Kessler's fantasy managers given his high price in drafts.; Elijah Harkless (Questionable) — Harkless played a season-high 21 minutes, sliding into the rotation for just the third time this season. While he did provide some nice energy on the defensive end, there is no indication that Harkless will be moving into a more permanent role anytime soon.
Cleveland Cavaliers: Chris Livingston (Questionable) — After being waived by the Bucks during training camp, Livingston has latched on with another team. The 2023 second-rounder will likely see most of his playing time come with the G League's Cleveland Charge, though Livingston is also a depth option in the Cavaliers' frontcourt while Jarrett Allen's (finger) status remains in limbo.; Max Strus (Out) — Strus hasn't yet made his season debut, and he needs even more time on the shelf to recover from offseason left foot surgery. It's unlikely the swingman will be ready to play until sometime in February at this point. In the meantime, Sam Merrill and Jaylon Tyson should continue helping fill out the minutes on the wing.; Dean Wade (Questionable) — This will be the third consecutive game on the sidelines for Wade, and for now, he should be considered questionable for Wednesday's game in Philadelphia. Jaylon Tyson, De'Andre Hunter and Nae'Qwan Tomlin will continue to pick up the slack in Wade's absence.

2Donovan MitchellOVER 29.5 Points Points-111
LActual 21
Donovan Mitchell is in a nuclear groove right now, averaging 31.0 PPG over his last five contests and clearing this 29.5 line in four of them. He faces a Utah Jazz defense that is currently the worst in the NBA and is reeling from a 55-point loss where they looked completely disinterested in guarding the perimeter.
The "revenge game" narrative is strong here, as Mitchell has historically elevated his game against his former employer. While the -13.5 spread suggests blowout risk, Mitchell's high usage (31.4%) and efficiency (49.5% FG) mean he can easily reach 30 points before the fourth quarter even begins.
In a game with a massive 238.5 total, the volume will be there for the Cavs' primary engine to feast.
Darius GarlandUNDER 18.5 Points Points-114
LActual 23
While the Cavs are expected to score in bunches, Darius Garland is the most likely candidate for a scoring "under" in this environment. His season average (17.7) is already below this 18.5 line, and the massive blowout risk (-13.5 spread) means he is the starter most likely to see his minutes capped in the second half.
Garland has been dealing with minor hand and toe issues recently, and with Donovan Mitchell and Sam Merrill carrying the scoring load, Garland has transitioned more into a facilitator role (6.9 APG). Utah's defense is terrible, but that often leads to balanced scoring where the primary playmaker defers to the hot hands.
Unless Garland comes out ultra-aggressive early, he likely settles into a 14-16 point performance before resting as the Cavs cruise to a win.
