Gary's Take The Minnesota Timberwolves are playing their best basketball of the season right now, and it’s all coming from a defensive intensity that Rudy Gobert sparked a week ago. Since then, the Wolves have ripped off three straight double-digit wins, including a total dismantling of Miami. The shift to starting Donte DiVincenzo has unlocked a new level of spacing for Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle, and frankly, I don't see how an undersized Cleveland backcourt keeps Edwards from getting to his spots. Edwards is averaging nearly 30 a night, and with Mike Conley now steadying the second unit, Minnesota’s bench firepower with Naz Reid is a massive advantage over a depleted Cavs reserve unit.
Cleveland gets Donovan Mitchell back tonight, which obviously raises their ceiling, but the supporting cast is where this breaks down. Missing both Max Strus and Dean Wade is a quiet disaster for the Cavs' spacing and wing defense. Without those two, Rudy Gobert can essentially camp in the lane and dare Mitchell or Darius Garland to challenge him at the rim. While Cleveland ranks 3rd in the league in three-pointers made, they’re running into a Minnesota defense that ranks 6th in limiting opponent threes.
The market is giving us a short number here because of Mitchell’s return, but the situational data is screaming Minnesota. The Wolves are 13-6 at home and have been resting in Minneapolis since Tuesday, while Cleveland is just 8-8 on the road and a dismal 6-10 against the spread in away games. In a matchup of elite defenses, I’m taking the team with the superior health, the home-court edge, and the physical advantage on the wings. Minnesota covers the short number at Target Center.
Injuries noted
Cleveland Cavaliers: Larry Nance Jr. (Questionable) — Nance has been out since Nov. 28, but this is the first time he's received the questionable tag since going down, which indicates progress. Check back closer to Thursday's tip for official word on Nance's status.; Chris Livingston (Out) — After being waived by the Bucks during training camp, Livingston has latched on with another team. The 2023 second-rounder will likely see most of his playing time come with the G League's Cleveland Charge, though Livingston is also a depth option in the Cavaliers' frontcourt while Jarrett Allen's (finger) status remains in limbo.; Max Strus (Out) — Strus hasn't yet made his season debut, and he needs even more time on the shelf to recover from offseason left foot surgery. It's unlikely the swingman will be ready to play until sometime in February at this point. In the meantime, Sam Merrill and Jaylon Tyson should continue helping fill out the minutes on the wing.; Dean Wade (Out) — Wade picked up a left knee bruise during Tuesday's game, and the issue will prevent him from suiting up Thursday. The forward's absence should mean more opportunities for Jaylon Tyson, De'Andre Hunter and Nae'Qwan Tomlin.; Jaylon Tyson (Day-To-Day) — Tyson is under the weather, but his illness doesn't appear to be severe enough for him to be in serious jeopardy of missing Thursday's road game. If he were to miss time, then De'Andre Hunter, Lonzo Ball and Nae'Qwan Tomlin would all be in line for more minutes off the bench.
Minnesota Timberwolves: Rocco Zikarsky (Questionable) — Undisclosed; Terrence Shannon Jr. (Out) — Shannon is set to miss an extended period due to a muscle strain in his foot, and he also missed nine consecutive games in November due to a bone bruise in his left foot. With the second-year swingman on the shelf once again, Jaylen Clark and Bones Hyland are candidates for a slight bump in playing time.

2Rudy GobertOVER 11.5 Rebounds Rebounds-106
WActual 13
Rudy is playing like a man possessed since hitting that 10,000 rebound milestone, and he's been a vacuum on the glass lately. He's cleared this 11.5 line in three straight games, including massive 14 and 16 rebound performances.
When he sees Jarrett Allen across the court, he takes it personally—historically out-boarding him by a significant margin in their head-to-head matchups. In a game with a sky-high 240.5 total, there are going to be plenty of missed shots to chase down, and nobody in the league is better at securing those second chances than the Stifle Tower in his own building.
Expect Gobert to dominate the interior and hit this over before the fourth quarter even starts.
Donovan MitchellOVER 29.5 Points Points-111
WActual 30
Donovan is coming back with fresh legs after a maintenance day, and in my 30 years, I've learned that's usually a recipe for a scoring explosion. Before that rest, he was absolutely torching the league, putting up 30, 33, and 34 points in consecutive games where he looked completely unstoppable.
He’s got a history of lighting up the Target Center, and with the Cavs struggling to cover spreads lately, Mitchell knows he has to be the alpha to keep them in this game. Minnesota’s defense is tough, but they don't have anyone who can stay in front of Spida when he's determined to get to his spots.
Expect him to hunt his shot early and often, looking to prove that the day off only made him more dangerous.
