Gary's Take Normally, betting against a 26-3 juggernaut with a +18.0 net rating is financial suicide. But the Oklahoma City Thunder walk into a brutal situational spot tonight that their season-long metrics can't account for. They are on the second night of a back-to-back after battling Memphis yesterday, traveling overnight to face a San Antonio Spurs team that has been resting since Saturday. In the NBA, rest discrepancies this wide are often worth 3-4 points alone.
The real angle here, however, is the personnel mismatch in the paint. Oklahoma City's defensive rating is elite, but that number was built with Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein anchoring the middle. Both are out. The Thunder are effectively playing without a center, forced to use emergency small-ball lineups. Even with Victor Wembanyama potentially limited or coming off the bench as he ramps up, San Antonio has the size with Luke Kornet and their forwards to punish OKC on the interior and the glass. We saw this play out on December 12, when the Spurs walked into OKC and won 111-109—proof of concept that this matchup works for them.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is playing at an MVP level, but he can't box out 7-footers by himself. San Antonio is 10-2 at home and 21-7 overall; getting 5.5 points with a team this good, at home, with a rest advantage, against a depleted opponent is simply too much value to pass up. The Thunder are running on fumes and small-ball prayers tonight.

Jalen Williams is really stepping into a massive role right now for the Thunder with so many of their big men out of commission. He’s essentially become the 1B to Shai’s 1A, and he’s thriving with the extra touches and freedom to create his own shot.
Without Chet Holmgren clogging the lane, the spacing is different, and Williams is using his size and speed to get wherever he wants on the floor. The Spurs' defense can be vulnerable when they aren't fully set, and Williams is one of the best transition scorers in the league.
I see him being aggressive early and often in this one to keep the pressure on San Antonio's young core. It’s hard to imagine him not getting at least 20 points given the current state of the OKC roster.

Stephon Castle is playing with a level of confidence we rarely see from rookies this early in the season. The Spurs have been handing him the keys more often lately, and he's responded by attacking the basket with total disregard for who's standing in his way.
Tonight’s matchup is particularly interesting because Oklahoma City is missing their primary eraser at the rim, which opens up huge driving lanes for a downhill guard like Castle. He’s been consistently seeing double-digit shot attempts, and he’s aggressive enough to earn himself several trips to the charity stripe.
In a game that should have plenty of possessions, Castle's volume alone should carry him past this scoring total. He's becoming a go-to guy in San Antonio, and this is another great spot for him to showcase that.
