Sports picks for Tuesday, May 26, 2026

The red-hot Washington Nationals look to secure a series victory on the road as they send Cade Cavalli to the mound against Joey Cantillo and the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field. Washington just flexed its offensive muscle in game one with a 10-2 blowout win highlighted by six home runs. This is no one-game fluke; the Nationals have been a force on the road this season, carrying an 18-11 away record and averaging north of five runs per game outside of D.C. Cade Cavalli has hit his stride at the perfect time. Over his last five starts, he has dialed in his command, walking just seven batters while striking out 33 across 28.3 innings. That high strikeout floor is a nightmare for a Guardians lineup that has gone completely cold, scoring three or fewer runs in six consecutive games. On the Cleveland side, Joey Cantillo's pristine 3.05 season ERA is a ticking time bomb. A deeper look at his recent form reveals major control issues, with 14 walks over his last 25.2 innings. Giving free passes to a surging Washington lineup that is clearly seeing the ball well is a recipe for disaster. Cantillo is heavily reliant on Cleveland's elite defense bailing him out of high-traffic innings, but you can't defend the ball when it leaves the yard. Furthermore, Cleveland’s pitching depth is suddenly being tested after setup man Erik Sabrowski landed on the injured list and yesterday's starter got chased early, which forced the Guardians to expose their middle relief corps. The plus-money value on the Nationals is impossible to ignore. Washington is peaking offensively, getting dominant strikeout stuff from their starter, and facing a Cleveland squad whose lineup has lost its rhythm. While Cleveland has tactically stacked its lineup with lefties to combat Cavalli, it won't matter if they can't string together hits. The road warriors from Washington have the clear momentum, the better underlying starting pitching form, and the explosive offensive firepower to exploit Cantillo’s sudden lack of command. Take the Nationals on the moneyline.

It’s a warm night at Camden Yards as the Orioles try to ride the momentum of back-to-back walk-offs against the visiting Rays. The biggest factor in this AL East showdown is the fallout from yesterday’s 13-inning marathon. Both bullpens are running on fumes, which places a massive premium on starting pitching length. That dynamic heavily favors Baltimore. Shane Baz has been volatile this season, but he offers genuine volume. He just spun six innings of one-run ball against this exact Tampa Bay lineup six days ago, and his ability to navigate through the middle innings tonight is a critical strategic advantage for an Orioles team desperate to rest its high-leverage arms. On the other side, Griffin Jax’s shiny surface ERA masks a very fragile profile. His 4.49 xERA indicates significant looming regression, and more importantly, he is effectively operating as a short-burst opener. Jax has failed to complete three innings in two of his last five starts, meaning the Rays will be forced to expose a heavily taxed middle relief corps much earlier than they’d like. Against a Baltimore lineup sporting a 44 percent hard-hit rate and riding a massive emotional high after Colton Cowser's recent heroics, trying to piece together the bulk of a game from a fatigued bullpen is a dangerous game plan. The environmental conditions further tilt the scales toward the home side. With temperatures sitting at 75 degrees and a light breeze blowing out to left field, Camden Yards will play favorably for Baltimore's power-heavy bats like Samuel Basallo and Gunnar Henderson. While Tampa Bay has aggressively stacked left-handed hitters to counter Baz, the sheer math of the pitching workload dictates the outcome here. The Orioles have a starter capable of taking them deep enough to bridge the gap, while the Rays are attempting to execute a heavily managed bullpen game with an empty tank.

We're under the lights at cavernous Comerica Park tonight as the Detroit Tigers look to snap out of a home funk against the visiting Los Angeles Angels. The foundation of this matchup heavily favors the home side, starting right on the mound. Keider Montero has been a model of high-floor stability for Detroit, boasting a sparkling 1.01 WHIP and an elite walk rate that keeps traffic off the basepaths. On the other side, Jack Kochanowicz is walking a tightrope. Despite a manageable surface ERA, his underlying metrics are screaming for negative regression, highlighted by a ballooned 5.03 xERA and a staggering .351 xwOBA. Kochanowicz struggles mightily with command, and putting free runners on base at a 4.55 BB/9 clip is a recipe for disaster. The environmental and stylistic factors tonight compound the Angels' issues. The wind is blowing in from right field at 8 mph, which perfectly complements Montero's contact-management approach and neutralizes the Angels' right-handed, pull-heavy power threats like Mike Trout and Jorge Soler. Conversely, the Tigers feature a lineup loaded with left-handed and switch-hitting bats—sparked by Riley Greene and rookie Kevin McGonigle—designed specifically to exploit Kochanowicz's well-documented struggles against lefties. Add in the late scratch of Nolan Schanuel, which robs the Angels of their primary left-handed on-base presence at the top of the order, and the structural advantage swings firmly toward Detroit. While the Angels arrive riding a three-game winning streak, that momentum is highly deceptive given their dismal 8-18 road record. Detroit's recent home slide has been marred by tight, low-scoring losses to elite competition, making this a prime bounce-back spot against a vastly inferior pitching staff. If Kochanowicz’s volatile command forces an early exit, the Angels will have to rely on a bullpen in absolute disarray, headlined by Jordan Romano's disastrous 10.13 ERA. Detroit’s relievers, anchored by Kyle Finnegan, offer far more stability in the late innings. The Tigers have the better starter, the superior bullpen, and a lineup built to exploit the opposing pitcher's flaws in a ballpark that perfectly suits their run-prevention style.

We're under the lights at PNC Park for a pivotal NL Central clash as the reeling Chicago Cubs try to stop the bleeding against the surging Pittsburgh Pirates. The most glaring mismatch in this contest sits right on the mound. Braxton Ashcraft takes the ball for Pittsburgh in peak mid-season form, boasting a brilliant 1.91 ERA over his last four starts and elite command that keeps runners off the basepaths. Conversely, the Cubs are handing the ball to Jordan Wicks for his 2026 season debut. Thrust into action after Edward Cabrera's recent blister issue, Wicks is returning from left elbow inflammation and will inevitably be operating on a strict pitch count. Asking a starter to find his major-league rhythm in his first outing while trying to snap a nine-game losing streak is a monumental task. The cascading effect of Wicks' expected short outing spells disaster for Chicago's relief corps. With Wicks likely capped around 75 to 85 pitches, the Cubs will be forced to rely on a middle relief unit that has been severely thinned out over the course of the season. Chicago simply does not have the high-leverage bridge required to comfortably suppress the Pirates' bats in the middle innings. On the other side, Pittsburgh holds a massive structural advantage in the late innings. If Ashcraft can hand a lead over to the bullpen, the Pirates can confidently turn to their high-end leverage arms, including Gregory Soto and his 0.79 WHIP, to slam the door. Offensively, the teams are trending in completely opposite directions. The Cubs are mired in a miserable slump, failing to eclipse two runs in four of their last five games and consistently struggling to capitalize on scoring opportunities. While Chicago's left-handed and switch-hitters like Ian Happ and Michael Busch theoretically get the platoon advantage against Ashcraft, Pittsburgh's pitching staff has already proven they can neutralize this lineup, evident in yesterday's tight 2-1 series-opening victory. With a locked-in starter on the mound, a much more stable bullpen situation, and the confidence of a team playing well in their home ballpark, the Pirates are perfectly positioned to extend Chicago's misery tonight.

We are under the lights at historic Fenway Park for a cross-league clash, as the high-powered Atlanta Braves roll into Boston to face a Red Sox team desperately searching for answers at home. It is rare to find the team with the best record in baseball priced as a virtual pick'em against a club sitting well under .500, but that is exactly what we have tonight. The Braves arrive with a spectacular 19-8 road record, completely unfazed by hostile environments. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have been inexplicably abysmal at Fenway, carrying a league-worst 8-17 home mark and coming off a deflating sweep at the hands of the Twins. While Atlanta has dropped two straight and their lineup has gone slightly cold against left-handed pitching in recent games, the overall talent disparity between these two rosters is massive. On the mound, the starting pitching dynamic features an elite strikeout artist against a veteran who is heavily outperforming his underlying metrics. Spencer Strider is building his workload back up and already boasts a dominant 11.57 K/9 rate. His 2.68 xERA indicates his elite stuff is fully intact, and he gets to attack a Boston lineup that ranks near the bottom of the league in runs scored. On the other side, Ranger Suarez has produced excellent surface results lately, but his 3.18 xERA and heavy reliance on pitch-to-contact methods make him vulnerable. Fenway is playing exceptionally hitter-friendly tonight with 80-degree temperatures and the wind blowing out to center field, creating a dangerous environment for a contact pitcher facing an Atlanta lineup that leads the National League in scoring. The most glaring difference between these clubs emerges in the late innings. If this game is tied or close in the sixth, the Braves possess a massive structural advantage. Atlanta can turn to a lockdown relief bridge featuring Robert Suarez and Raisel Iglesias to completely slam the door. Boston, beyond Aroldis Chapman, relies on a shaky middle relief corps that is highly susceptible to giving up crooked numbers against elite hitters. Combining Boston's systemic struggles at home, Suarez's looming regression in hitter-friendly weather conditions, and Atlanta's vastly superior bullpen depth, the Braves offer tremendous value to bounce back and take care of business on the road.

We've got a fascinating clash of styles tonight at Rogers Centre, as the Marlins send their traditional workhorse against a patchwork Blue Jays pitching plan. The Blue Jays are dealing with a brutal wave of fresh injuries that completely alters their ceiling for this matchup. Losing Dylan Cease to a hamstring injury forced Toronto into a risky opener-bulk strategy, relying on Braydon Fisher and Spencer Miles to navigate a Marlins lineup that is averaging over five runs a game during their current four-game winning streak. Worse yet, the Jays are officially without Vladimir Guerrero Jr. tonight, whose absence removes the one Toronto bat who historically tortures Miami starter Sandy Alcantara. Without Guerrero Jr. looming in the heart of the order, Alcantara is positioned for a vintage performance. Despite a bloated 4.00 surface ERA, his 3.35 xERA indicates he is throwing the ball much better than his traditional numbers show and is a prime candidate for positive regression. He matches up well against a depleted Toronto lineup that has managed just three total runs over its last two games and lacks the middle-of-the-order firepower to consistently punish his mistakes or drive up his pitch count early in the game. Meanwhile, Miami's left-handed power threats like Liam Hicks, who has launched 10 of his 11 home runs against right-handers, are perfectly positioned to exploit Toronto's right-handed pitching tandem tonight. Add in the undeniable reality that the Marlins have historically thrived in this building—boasting a 14-5 all-time record in Toronto, including yesterday's 8-2 blowout—and Miami holds every situational advantage. Getting plus money on a surging team with their ace on the mound against a reeling, shorthanded opponent is the clear play.

We're under the lights at Citi Field as the surging Cincinnati Reds look to secure a series victory against a reeling New York Mets squad. The defining feature of this contest is the stark contrast on the mound. Cincinnati hands the ball to rookie sensation Chase Burns, who has been nothing short of dominant, carrying a 1.83 ERA and a microscopic 0.95 WHIP. He is missing bats at an elite clip and enters this matchup in peak form, having allowed one or fewer runs in four consecutive starts. On the other side, the Mets turn to David Peterson, who has labored heavily this season. Peterson is carrying a 5.03 ERA and a bloated 1.55 WHIP, consistently putting traffic on the basepaths. More concerning for New York is his severe vulnerability in this exact environment, holding an 8.41 ERA in night games and a 6.33 ERA at his home park. The offensive context only widens the gap between these two teams. Cincinnati has built a lineup specifically designed to punish left-handed pitching, stacking eight right-handed bats against Peterson tonight. Switch-hitting star Elly De La Cruz anchors this attack, bringing a massive .971 OPS against southpaws to the plate, while Tyler Stephenson and rookie Blake Dunn have both proven highly effective in these exact platoon splits. The Reds are swinging the bats with authority, plating seven or more runs in three of their last four games. Conversely, the Mets' lineup is in a severe rut, managing just four total runs over their current four-game losing streak. While they receive a boost with Juan Soto returning to the designated hitter spot, a fresh injury absence to Tyrone Taylor leaves this outfield thin and the lineup lacking the depth required to consistently threaten an elite arm like Burns. When the starters eventually exit, the situation heavily favors the visitors. Peterson has failed to complete six innings in any of his last five starts, meaning the Mets will likely have to expose a shaky, taxed middle relief corps early in the game. Cincinnati's bullpen is in a much stronger position, largely because Burns consistently pitches deep into his starts and limits the exposure of their relievers. The Reds are playing with significant momentum and hold all the tangible advantages in terms of starting pitching, platoon matchups, and overall offensive firepower. With the Mets struggling to manufacture run support and attempting to snap a losing skid, Cincinnati is perfectly positioned to control this matchup from the first pitch and secure a decisive road victory.

A gorgeous spring evening at Kauffman Stadium sets the stage for a pitching matchup that presents one of the widest statistical gaps of the young season. The New York Yankees look to extend their psychological mastery over the Kansas City Royals in a game that features a massive mismatch on the mound. Cam Schlittler has established himself as the frontrunner for the American League Cy Young Award, posting a microscopic 1.50 ERA and 0.86 WHIP over 11 starts. His recent form is even more terrifying, as he has surrendered just four earned runs over his last 29.2 innings of work while striking out 34. In contrast, the Royals are forced into a bullpen day started by Bailey Falter, who has been highly vulnerable in his short appearances, logging a 9.82 ERA and a 2.86 WHIP. Falter's struggles to find the strike zone and limit baserunners create an immediate hazard against a disciplined Yankees offense. New York has been absolutely lethal against left-handed pitching this season, leading the majors with a .790 OPS in that split. The Yankees have optimized their lineup to exploit this, utilizing right-handed bats like Amed Rosario and Paul Goldschmidt alongside Aaron Judge to ensure they can strike early. Once Falter departs, the Royals must lean on a fatigued bullpen that has yielded 14 earned runs over its last 17.2 innings and is missing key leverage arms. New York also holds a quiet advantage behind the plate, where catcher Austin Wells ranks in the 96th percentile in framing, helping to steal crucial strikes for Schlittler's high-velocity sinker. With Kansas City’s bullpen taxed and closer Lucas Erceg likely unavailable after a high-stress, 32-pitch blown save yesterday, the Royals have very few reliable paths to navigate nine innings. Meanwhile, the Yankees' bullpen is fresh and structured behind Schlittler, who has already demonstrated the ability to completely shut down this Royals lineup in their previous meeting. While a -200 road moneyline requires a hefty price, the starting pitching mismatch, bullpen availability, and platoon advantages are too overwhelming to ignore. Trust the Yankees to continue their dominance and secure another victory in Kansas City.

A warm, partly cloudy night at American Family Field sets the stage for a critical National League Central showdown, as the first-place Milwaukee Brewers look to extend their division lead over the rival St. Louis Cardinals. Tonight's game revolves around a starting pitching matchup that features the ultimate contrast between elite, sustainable dominance and an impending regression disaster. The Brewers send breakout left-hander Kyle Harrison to the mound, who has emerged as a Cy Young contender with a 1.77 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and a dominant 11.6 K/9. Harrison is coming off a spectacular 7.0-inning, 11-strikeout shutout performance and boasts advanced metrics (2.96 xERA) that prove his success is entirely legitimate. He faces a slumping Cardinals lineup that is batting an anemic .199 over its last five games and was held to just one run yesterday. On the other side, Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy is a ticking time bomb. While his 2.40 surface ERA looks impressive, his underlying Statcast metrics reveal a massive 5.84 xERA and an opponent xwOBA of .374. McGreevy relies heavily on a low-strikeout, pitch-to-contact profile (5.9 K/9) that is highly vulnerable in American Family Field, where the warm 82-degree air will help well-struck balls carry. Furthermore, the Brewers have optimized their lineup to exploit McGreevy's right-handedness, stacking their batting order with left-handed contact threats like Brice Turang, who is crushing right-handed pitching to the tune of a .328 average and a 1.032 OPS this season. St. Louis has tried to shield slumping hitters by benching Nolan Gorman, but this forces Alec Burleson into the cleanup spot against a tough left-hander in Harrison, despite Burleson's dismal .214 average and .523 OPS against southpaws. While the Cardinals possess a robust bullpen that could keep things close late, their path to reaching those high-leverage frames with a lead is incredibly narrow. The combination of Harrison's elite swing-and-miss stuff and the Brewers' relentless, speed-and-contact approach against a regression-candidate starter makes this a heavily lopsided matchup. Following last night's historic pitching display, Milwaukee holds all the momentum and possesses the perfect defensive and offensive structure to exploit McGreevy's weaknesses. Back the Brewers to take care of business at home and stretch their division lead.

We’ve got a Lone Star showdown tonight at Globe Life Field as the Rangers look to dust themselves off and bounce back from a historic beating, while the surging Astros try to keep their winning streak alive under the roof in Arlington. This is a classic situational spot where the market price hasn't fully caught up to a massive roster boost for the home team. The biggest catalyst for Texas tonight is the immediate return of third baseman Josh Jung, who missed the last two games with shoulder soreness. With a clean MRI in hand, Jung is slotted right back into the cleanup spot, providing an instant offensive anchor and stabilizing an infield defense that ranks fourth in the majors with a 72.1% defensive efficiency rating. His return is a nightmare scenario for Astros starter Jason Alexander, who carries a bloated 7.30 ERA and 1.70 WHIP. Alexander is a sinker-baller who struggles mightily against left-handed bats, allowing a career .390 wOBA to lefties. The Rangers have stacked their lineup to exploit this, slotting left-handed threats like Joc Pederson, Alejandro Osuna, and Brandon Nimmo in the top three spots to force Alexander into high-stress situations early. On the mound, Texas starter Jack Leiter is poised to dominate this depleted Houston lineup. Leiter has excellent underlying home metrics and already silenced these same Astros on May 15, throwing seven innings of one-run ball. While Houston boasts dangerous bats like Yordan Alvarez, their lineup lacks depth and is vulnerable to high-strikeout pitchers when they can't rely on the long ball. Additionally, while the Astros’ bullpen is well-rested, the Rangers' elite high-leverage arms—specifically Jacob Latz and Jakob Junis—are completely fresh after sitting out yesterday's blowout. If Leiter can give Texas five solid frames, their premium bullpen is fully locked and loaded to shut the door and secure the victory.

Welcome to a pivotal Game 5 at the Paycom Center, where the top two seeds in the Western Conference battle to break a 2-2 deadlock with a spot in the NBA Finals on the line. The Oklahoma City Thunder return home after a historic offensive collapse in Game 4, looking to re-establish the dominant style that earned them a league-leading +11.1 Net Rating during the regular season (compared to San Antonio's +8.4). However, the San Antonio Spurs are playing their absolute best basketball of the season, boasting an elite 104.8 Defensive Rating over their last five games compared to their 110.4 season average, while the Thunder's defense has allowed a 108.4 Defensive Rating over their last five games compared to their 106.5 season average. The primary differentiator in this matchup is San Antonio's relentless interior and glass dominance. During the regular season, the Spurs held a clear advantage with a 30.6% Offensive Rebound Rate and a 72.4% Defensive Rebound Rate (compared to OKC's 26.4% and 69.7% respectively). This rebounding superiority, anchored by Victor Wembanyama's historic 28.0 PPG and 11.8 RPG over his last five games, has neutralized OKC's interior, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been held to 26.8 PPG and 2.8 RPG in the same span. Furthermore, Chet Holmgren has seen his offensive output fall to 12.2 PPG over his last five games (compared to his 17.1 PPG season average), while Wembanyama has ascended to 28.0 PPG over his last five games (compared to his 25.0 PPG season average) while dominating the matchup. With rookie Stephon Castle successfully executing single-coverage defense on Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder's drive-and-kick options are dry, leading to highly contested mid-range shots. Roster health also tilts heavily in the Spurs' favor. San Antonio enters Game 5 completely healthy with zero active injuries, as De'Aaron Fox and Dylan Harper are fully cleared. Conversely, the Thunder's backcourt rotation is severely compromised by a FRESH injury to primary backup guard Ajay Mitchell (Out) [FRESH — Since May 21 (4d, 1 game missed)], which has severely strained their ball-handling depth. This fatigue was evident in Game 4 when the Thunder's offense stalled in a 103-82 blowout loss, highlighting the lack of reliable secondary ball-handling. With Sixth Man of the Year Keldon Johnson (13.2 PPG, 5.4 RPG) providing stable, high-intensity bench play, the Spurs possess the physical endurance to disrupt OKC's home-court advantage. San Antonio has won 6 of the 9 head-to-head meetings between these teams this season, making the Spurs at +3.5 the premier value play tonight.
