Sports picks for Friday, December 5, 2025

TALE OF THE TAPE Boston Celtics Los Angeles Lakers Record 13-9 16-5 → Off Rating 120.0 ← 119.6 Def Rating 114.8 114.0 → Net Rating 5.3 5.6 → Key Injuries Jayson Tatum (OUT) Marcus Smart (OUT) Gary's Take I love this spot for the Lakers. With Jayson Tatum sidelined, Boston loses its primary scorer and late-clock creator, so that glossy offensive rating is almost certainly inflated by minutes they are not getting tonight. Meanwhile, Los Angeles has played at essentially the same overall efficiency level but with clearly better shooting and scoring efficiency, and that edge becomes more pronounced when Boston’s best weapon is in street clothes. The Lakers have been outstanding on the road and in tight games, while Boston has merely been solid in both areas. If this turns into the kind of close, grindy finish these matchups usually do, Los Angeles’ perfect clutch record should matter more than Boston’s home-court reputation. The only way this really goes sideways is if Boston’s supporting cast collectively erupts from deep to cover the Tatum gap. I’m betting the long-term efficiency and Tatum’s absence win out. Lock it in: Los Angeles Lakers ML +205.

TALE OF THE TAPE Orlando Magic Miami Heat Record 13-9 14-8 ← Off Rating 111.6 117.1 ← Def Rating 108.8 ← 110.6 Net Rating +2.8 +6.5 ← Key Injuries Banchero, M. Wagner, Rozier (OUT), Herro (Q) Castleton (all OUT) Gary's Take I love this spot for Miami. Even shorthanded in the backcourt with Terry Rozier out and Tyler Herro questionable, the Heat still bring the clearly stronger overall profile (net rating 6.5 vs 2.8 and offensive rating 117.1 vs 111.6). Orlando’s calling card is defense, especially at home (defensive rating 108.8 and 8-4 home record), but without Paolo Banchero their already modest offense is under more strain (team offensive rating 111.6). Here’s how I see this playing out: Bam Adebayo works the middle of the floor and forces Orlando’s bigs like Goga Bitadze and Jonathan Isaac into tough decisions, while Andrew Wiggins and Norman Powell attack in transition and early offense (Miami pace 106.4 vs Orlando 102.8). The numbers don’t lie – Miami has been better in tight games too (clutch record 6-2 vs 4-4), which matters if this stays within a couple of possessions. The public is going to look at Orlando’s home record and Banchero’s name and still lay the points, but the efficiency and clutch edges lean to Miami, and getting this many points with the better net-rating team is exactly where value lives (net rating gap +3.7 in Miami’s favor). Only way this misses is if Orlando’s role players catch absolute fire to mask their missing star for 48 minutes, and I’m willing to bet against that. Lock this in: Miami Heat +5.5 -110.

TALE OF THE TAPE Atlanta Hawks Denver Nuggets Record 13-10 15-6 → Off Rating 112.6 124.9 → Def Rating 113.3 ← 113.7 Net Rating -0.6 11.3 → Key Injuries Trae Young, Kristaps Aaron Gordon, Christian Porzingis, Jacob Toppin Braun, Julian Strawther Gary's Take I’ve been waiting for this matchup all week – an elite offense walks into a building where the home side is missing its heartbeat (Nuggets 124.9 offensive rating vs Hawks 112.6). Denver owns a big overall efficiency gap in net rating (Nuggets +11.3 vs Hawks -0.6), and Atlanta is down Trae Young plus Kristaps Porzingis, who had been their most efficient scorer (Porzingis 118.9 offensive rating on 25.0 usage). Both teams like to play quick, but Denver thrives in that environment (Nuggets at a 101.3 pace with a 15-6 overall mark and 9-2 on the road, vs Atlanta’s 103.3 pace with just 4-5 at home). The shot quality gap is real, with Denver clearly ahead in both effective field goal and true shooting (59.7% eFG and 63.7% TS vs Atlanta’s 55.9% and 60.2%). Even with Aaron Gordon and Christian Braun out (Gordon 125.7 offensive rating, 105.0 defensive rating on 22.1 usage), those losses mostly ding depth, not the primary creators driving this attack (Jamal Murray 125.8 offensive rating on 25.9 usage). Everyone’s focused on Denver’s struggles in tight finishes (1-4 in games decided by five or fewer points, vs Atlanta’s 5-2), but this efficiency and shooting edge points to a game that never quite gets into true coin-flip territory, especially with Atlanta’s offense downgraded by injuries (team 112.6 offensive rating built with those pieces on the floor). I see Denver creating daylight by the third quarter and keeping a battered Hawks squad at arm’s length. Lock this in: Denver Nuggets -4.5.

TALE OF THE TAPE Toronto Raptors Charlotte Hornets Record 15-8 ← 5-17 Off Rating 116.0 ← 111.0 Def Rating 113.2 ← 121.8 Net Rating +2.8 ← -10.9 Key Injuries RJ Barrett (OUT), Kalkbrenner (Q) Cam Thomas (OUT), Highsmith (OUT) Gary's Take I love this spot for Toronto tonight. The Raptors have been strong at home (8-3) while Charlotte has struggled overall (5-17 with just 4-7 on the road). The efficiency gap is massive: Toronto owns clear edges in offensive rating, defensive rating, and net rating (a double-digit advantage per 100 possessions), and they shoot more efficiently with a better effective field goal mark. Brandon Ingram is the key to this whole game, driving Toronto’s offense with a strong efficiency/usage combo (offensive rating 116.4 with 27.2 usage), while Immanuel Quickley adds another efficient creator (offensive rating 115.4, defensive rating 111.3). Jakob Poeltl stabilizes the interior defense (team defensive rating 113.2), and even without RJ Barrett (listed out), Toronto has been closing games better (3-1 in clutch spots vs Charlotte’s 0-1). Charlotte’s recent highs, like the 125-107 win over Brooklyn, are the exception, not the rule for a team with a deeply negative net rating. Unless Charlotte catches absolute fire again, Toronto’s efficiency edge and home form should show over 48 minutes. Lock this in: Raptors -7.5 -106.

TALE OF THE TAPE Cleveland Cavaliers San Antonio Spurs Record 13-10 → 15-6 Off Rating 114.8 → 117.1 Def Rating 111.1 ← 113.7 Net Rating +3.7 ← +3.5 Key Injuries Garland, Strus, Allen, Nance Wembanyama, Castle, McLaughlin, Kornet (Q) Gary's Take Everyone's focused on all the injuries in this game, but this is exactly the kind of spot where the numbers still point to the dog. San Antonio brings the stronger offensive profile and shot-making edge, while Cleveland is leaning on its defense and home court to carry a short-handed roster missing its point guard, top shooter, and starting center. That’s a lot of creation, spacing, and rim protection off the floor. Here’s how I see this playing out: Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley have to do a ton of heavy lifting just to keep Cleveland’s offense afloat, while the Spurs spread the floor, move the ball, and let their efficiency wear on a depleted Cavs rotation over 48 minutes. In a fast-paced, high-possession game with San Antonio also more comfortable in tight finishes, those extra points become very valuable. The only way this really burns us is if Mitchell absolutely goes nuclear and drags Cleveland to a clear-margin win. With the offensive edge, better record, and Cleveland missing multiple core starters, this screams value to me on the underdog staying inside the number. Lock this in: San Antonio Spurs +4.5 -108.

TALE OF THE TAPE Detroit Pistons Portland Trail Blazers Record 17-5 ← 9-13 Off Rating 113.5 → 114.0 Def Rating 110.6 ← 115.3 Net Rating +3.0 ← -1.3 Key Injuries Sasser, Klintman Holiday, Thybulle, Henderson, Wesley, Lillard Gary's Take I love this spot for Detroit. The overall profile favors them in all the right places: better record, stronger defense, and a clear net rating edge that usually shows up over 48 minutes at home. Portland’s season-long offensive efficiency and shooting numbers look solid, but those were built with guards like Jrue Holiday and Damian Lillard on the floor, and both of them are out. That leaves Jerami Grant carrying a heavy creation burden against a Pistons defense that has been far more stable. On the other side, Detroit’s balanced efficiency and strong home form set the tone. With their main rotation largely intact and only depth pieces on the injury report, they can attack a Portland defense that has struggled even when healthy and is now missing Matisse Thybulle on the perimeter. Add in Detroit’s better performance in close games, and if this tightens late, they’re far more likely to execute. The numbers and the matchup both point the same way: Detroit should control this game and stretch the margin. Lock this in: Detroit Pistons -7.5 -108.

TALE OF THE TAPE New York Knicks Utah Jazz Record 14-7 ← 8-13 Off Rating 122.3 ← 114.0 Def Rating 113.7 ← 117.4 Net Rating +8.6 ← -3.4 Key Injuries OG Anunoby, Georges Niang, Landry Shamet Walker Kessler Gary's Take I love this spot for New York because their profile at home is a bully’s profile (11-1 at MSG, +8.6 net rating overall). Jalen Brunson steering an elite offense (122.3 offensive rating, 60.6% true shooting) against a Utah defense that just can’t get stops (117.4 defensive rating) is exactly the kind of mismatch that snowballs over four quarters. Here’s how I see it playing out: Brunson picks apart Utah in the halfcourt while Julius Randle pounds a front line missing Walker Kessler’s rim protection (Utah sitting at a negative net rating of -3.4 despite solid shooting). The Jazz want to run a bit faster (103.0 pace vs New York’s 100.0), but in the Garden the Knicks usually drag you into their game and lean on that efficiency edge on both ends. Even with OG Anunoby out (hamstring), the gap in overall quality and New York’s dominant home form (14-7 overall, 11-1 at home) is too big to ignore. Lock it in: I’m laying the number with the Knicks -16. The only way this misses is if Utah gets absurdly hot from deep for a full 48, and I’m willing to bet against that in this building.

TALE OF THE TAPE Chicago Bulls Indiana Pacers Record 9-12 ← 4-18 Off Rating 112.0 ← 109.5 Def Rating 116.3 → 115.8 Net Rating -4.3 ← -6.3 Key Injuries Huerter, Collins, Haliburton, Toppin, White (Q) Nesmith Gary's Take I love this spot for Chicago because the profile lines up on every level. The numbers don't lie – the Bulls have been a much different team at home, while Indiana still hasn’t figured out how to win on the road. Chicago owns the edge in offensive rating and shooting efficiency, and their better net rating backs up what the records already say. With Tyrese Haliburton and other key wings sidelined, Indiana is leaning heavily on Pascal Siakam to create against a defense that can at least make life difficult. Here's how I see this playing out: in a high-possession game, Chicago’s faster tempo and cleaner half-court offense run through Nikola Vucevic wear down a Pacers group that has already shown cracks against quality opponents. When this gets tight late, the Bulls’ stronger clutch record should matter, especially against a team that has struggled to close. This screams value with Chicago laying a small number at home. Lock this in: Chicago Bulls -4.5 -110. The only way this misses is if Indiana suddenly looks like a competent road team for four quarters and turns this into a coin-flip at the buzzer.

TALE OF THE TAPE Houston Rockets Phoenix Suns Record 14-5 ← 13-9 Off Rating 119.6 ← 113.7 Def Rating 108.5 ← 113.9 Net Rating +11.1 ← -0.2 Key Injuries Eason, Finney-Smith, Livers, Booker, VanVleet Jalen Green Gary's Take I love this spot for Houston. The Rockets hold clear edges in both offensive and defensive efficiency, and they're doing it while already playing without Fred VanVleet, so this version of the team is what the numbers reflect. Phoenix's profile still bakes in Devin Booker, but he's sidelined now, taking away their top on-ball creator. Here's how I see it playing out. Kevin Durant controls the half-court offense, and Houston's size with Clint Capela and Steven Adams backs up that strong defensive rating by forcing Phoenix into contested looks. Without Booker, the Suns lean on Dillon Brooks and Grayson Allen to manufacture shots against an elite defense, which is a tough way to stay close. The efficiency and net rating gaps, plus Houston's strong home results, point to the Rockets stretching this one out rather than sweating a coin-flip late. The number is big, but it's big for a reason with Phoenix so shorthanded. I'm laying the points: Houston Rockets -11.5.

TALE OF THE TAPE Memphis Grizzlies Los Angeles Clippers Record 9-13 ← 6-16 Off Rating 105.5 → 112.4 Def Rating 112.1 ← 118.2 Net Rating -6.6 → -5.7 Key Injuries Ja Morant, Ty Jerome, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Javon Small, Brandon Derrick Jones Jr., Clarke, Scotty Pippen Bradley Beal Gary's Take Everyone's focused on the Clippers having the more efficient offense, but this matchup is a lot tighter than that headline suggests. Memphis owns the better record, is at home, and has been the hotter team lately, already going into Los Angeles and beating this same group on their floor. Even without Ja Morant, the Grizzlies have found a workable identity: Jaren Jackson Jr. stretching the floor and attacking closeouts, John Konchar doing the dirty work on the wing, and veterans like Kentavious Caldwell-Pope giving them steady two-way minutes. The efficiency profile says Clippers score it better, but Memphis clearly defends better and they’ve been much more trustworthy late in tight games, with a strong clutch record compared to the Clippers’ ugly close-game mark. That matters in a near pick’em where a couple of late possessions swing everything. Add in that Bradley Beal is sidelined for the Clippers, and their late-game shot creation tilts even more toward forced looks. Here’s how I see this playing out: Memphis uses their faster tempo to put pressure on a soft Clippers defense, Jackson Jr. gets to his spots, and the Grizzlies’ superior poise in crunch time carries them over the line at home. Lock this in: I’m riding with Memphis Grizzlies ML +112. The only way this misses is if the Clippers finally reverse their late-game woes and hit an outlier night of tough shots on the road.

TALE OF THE TAPE Milwaukee Bucks Philadelphia 76ers Record 10-13 → 12-9 Off Rating 114.8 ← 113.3 Def Rating 114.9 → 112.5 Net Rating -0.0 → 0.9 Key Injuries Antetokounmpo, Prince Oubre Jr., Watford Gary's Take Everyone's focused on Giannis being out, but Philly’s overall edge runs deeper than just one missing superstar. The 76ers come in with the better record and road form (12-9 overall, 5-3 away) compared to Milwaukee (10-13 overall, 7-6 at home), and they back it up with a stronger defensive profile and net rating edge. Philadelphia’s efficiency is a touch cleaner, with superior shooting metrics and a better overall efficiency margin, while Milwaukee’s defense lags behind. Giannis’ absence rips out Milwaukee’s high-usage engine (123.7 offensive rating on 36.0 usage), forcing more responsibility onto guys like Bobby Portis, who hasn’t been as efficient on either end (111.4 offense, 116.6 defense on 21.1 usage). On the other side, Joel Embiid drives Philly’s attack as a high-usage hub (116.4 offensive rating on 32.5 usage), and when this turns into a half-court game, that kind of reliable creator matters. In tight finishes, Philly has been far more trustworthy (6-3 in close games vs 3-4 for Milwaukee), exactly what you want laying a short number. The numbers don’t lie: better defense, better net rating, stronger clutch record, and the opponent’s primary star on the shelf all point the same way. Lock this in: Philadelphia 76ers -1 -108.

TALE OF THE TAPE Oklahoma City Thunder Dallas Mavericks Record 21-1 ← 8-15 Off Rating 121.3 ← 109.2 Def Rating 102.9 ← 109.5 Net Rating +18.3 ← -0.3 Key Injuries Dort/Caruso/Hartenstein (OUT) P.J. Washington/Lively/Exum/Irving (OUT) Gary's Take I love this spot for Oklahoma City tonight because the overall profile gap between these teams is massive. The Thunder have been almost flawless overall and perfect at home, while Dallas sits well below .500 and has struggled on the road. The efficiency edge shows up everywhere – OKC owns big advantages in offensive rating, defensive rating, net rating, and shooting. Even with perimeter stoppers like Luguentz Dort, Alex Caruso, and Isaiah Hartenstein sidelined, the Thunder are still defending and scoring at an elite level. Dallas, on the other hand, is down multiple creators and frontcourt pieces including P.J. Washington, Dereck Lively II, Dante Exum, and Kyrie Irving, which forces a below-average attack to lean harder on role players such as Dwight Powell instead of a balanced rotation. Here is how I see it playing out: OKC’s shotmaking and depth create separation early, the home crowd fuels runs, and a thin Mavericks rotation struggles to keep pace for 48 minutes. The only real danger for the spread is a late backdoor if Dallas’ primary scorer goes off, but over the full game the Thunder’s efficiency and home dominance should translate into a comfortable win. Lock this in: Oklahoma City Thunder -15.
