The read

Clear skies, 76 degrees and a northeast breeze greet a Steelers team that walks into Raymond James Stadium as a road favorite. Across the field is a Buccaneers team starting an undrafted rookie at quarterback. The records say 3-2 against 1-4, but the play-by-play says this fight is much closer.

Tampa has been the more efficient team this season. The offenses grade out about the same, 25th and 23rd in EPA per play. The Bucs' defense, though, ranks 6th to Pittsburgh's 16th. Every Tampa loss came by one score, and turnovers did most of the damage.

The Baker Mayfield injury is why this price leans Pittsburgh, and it's being overplayed. Tampa's passing game was worse with Mayfield, at -0.17, -0.37 and -0.27 EPA per dropback, than it has been with Jalon Daniels at -0.14 and +0.23. Daniels plays it short and safe and adds a running threat. The rookie also gets to lean on Bucky Irving, who just ran for 165 yards as Tampa piled up 241 on the ground in Dallas.

That run game goes right at Pittsburgh's soft spot. Keeanu Benton is playing on a bad ankle, Derrick Harmon is out, and the Steelers allowed 6.8, 6.8 and 6.3 yards per play from Week 2 through Week 4. On the other side, Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson are out, leaving Pittsburgh's receiver room thin. That pushes Aaron Rodgers toward Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington and Jaylen Warren underneath, where Tampa's linebackers can rally.

Tampa also has 10 days of rest to Pittsburgh's 7, plus home field. In a game this even, plus money on the home side is the better ticket.

The danger is real. T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith against an undrafted rookie can wreck a game. Tampa has no sacks in either of its last two games, which could give Rodgers all day. If the Steelers' edge rushers take over, this goes Pittsburgh's way.

But this price is built on a 1-4 record and a famous name on the inactive list, and Tampa has played better than both. Give me the Bucs to win it outright.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

QUARTERBACK

  • Jalon Daniels is the projected starting quarterback for TB

    6.13 Y/A

Through 3 games in 2026, Jalon Daniels threw for 337 passing yards, completed 69.1% of his passes and averaged 6.13 yards per attempt. His 2-3 touchdown-to-interception line rounds out the current sample without turning an early-season profile into a settled one.

  • Aaron Rodgers is the projected starting quarterback for PIT

    6.71 Y/A

Through 5 games in 2026, Aaron Rodgers threw for 1234 passing yards, completed 59.8% of his passes and averaged 6.71 yards per attempt. Last season over 16 games he threw for 3322 yards, completed 65.7% and averaged 6.67 yards per attempt, 24-7 touchdowns to interceptions. This season's 10-4 touchdown-to-interception line is 5 games in.

TRENCHES

  • TB: 72.8 rushing yards allowed per game to PIT's 103.4

    30.6 YPG

Tampa Bay allows just 72.8 rushing yards a game through 5 games, and Pittsburgh gives up 103.4. The sheet doesn't show opponents, and teams that build leads see more runs, so script can shape both numbers. Tampa's front makes running a tough path for Pittsburgh, which points toward the Steelers needing to throw to move the ball.

PASS RUSH

  • PIT: 2.2 sacks recorded per game to TB's 1.2

    1 SACKS

Pittsburgh is getting 2.2 sacks a game over 5 games, and Tampa Bay sits at 1.2. That's a meaningful gap in how often each defense finishes on the quarterback, though opponent detail isn't on the sheet. If Pittsburgh's rush keeps winning, it can stall Tampa drives on passing downs, which is the spot to think about for the Bucs offense.

  • TB: 17 sack yards lost per game to PIT's 23.4

    6.4 YDS

PIT is at 23.4 sack yards lost per game over 5 games; TB is at 17 over 5 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 17. Last season PIT was at 14.8 over 17 games and TB at 15.9 over 17 games.

PACE & SCRIPT

  • PIT @ TB carries a 38.5 market total

    38.5

The market expects a low-scoring game, with this total sitting among the lowest on the board and well under the middle of the slate. That assumes defenses control drives and points come in small chunks. For the over to have life, explosive plays or turnovers in plus territory have to show up, so early chunk plays are the signal that this expectation is cracking.

TURNOVERS

  • PIT: 1.2 turnovers committed per game to TB's 1.8

    0.6 TO

PIT is at 1.2 turnovers committed per game over 5 games; TB is at 1.8 over 5 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 17. Last season PIT was at 0.88 over 17 games and TB at 0.94 over 17 games.

  • PIT: 0.4 fumbles lost per game to TB's 0.8

    0.4 FUM

PIT is at 0.4 fumbles lost per game over 5 games; TB is at 0.8 over 5 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 17. Last season PIT was at 0.35 over 17 games and TB at 0.29 over 17 games.

RED ZONE

  • TB: 3.4 red-zone trips per game to PIT's 2.2

    1.2 TRIPS

PIT is at 2.2 red-zone trips per game over 5 games; TB is at 3.4 over 5 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 17. Last season PIT was at 3 over 17 games and TB at 2.94 over 17 games.

MISMATCH

  • PIT: 223.4 pass yards a game to TB's 173.4

    223.4 VS 173.4

Pittsburgh is throwing for 223.4 yards a game over 5 games, up from 202.4 last season, while Tampa Bay has fallen to 173.4 from 205.9. Tampa Bay's drop is the sharper change, and a 5-game slump is more likely to recover than last. At Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh has the passing edge, but a Buccaneers air game closer to last season would shrink it fast.

REPLACEMENT

  • David Sills V (WR) is ir-r for TB

    IR-R

David Sills V is designated to return from injured reserve and is questionable Sunday against the Steelers with a hamstring injury. Questionable means it is a real game-day call. Even if he plays, a receiver coming off a hamstring may see limited snaps, so keep expectations modest.

  • Roman Wilson (WR) is on injured reserve for PIT

    IR

Pittsburgh put Wilson on IR Saturday with a finger injury, reported Oct 17, so he is out at Tampa Bay. IR means he cannot play until he becomes eligible to return. The facts here do not name who takes his targets.

  • DeShon Elliott (S) is ir-r for PIT

    IR-R

Elliott is on the designated-to-return list with a knee injury and is ruled out for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, reported Oct 17. The return tag means he is working back, and this week is too soon. Pittsburgh's safety group stays as it was without him for this game.

  • Michael Pittman Jr. (WR) is on injured reserve for PIT

    IR

The Steelers put Pittman on IR with a foot injury, reported Oct 10, so he misses this game at Tampa Bay. With Roman Wilson also landing on IR, the Steelers are thinner at receiver than earlier in the season. The facts here do not name who takes the targets.

  • Derrick Harmon (DT) is on injured reserve for PIT

    IR

The Steelers put Harmon on IR Monday with a foot injury, reported Oct 5, so he misses this game at Tampa Bay. IR means he cannot play until he is eligible to return. The facts here do not name who fills in on the interior line.

SITUATIONAL

  • PIT: 223.4 team passing yards per game to TB's 173.4

    50 YPG

Pittsburgh is throwing for 223.4 yards a game, up from 202.4 last season, while Tampa Bay has dropped to 173.4 from 205.9. Five games is a short window, and Tampa's dip looks out of line with its own history. The Bucs lean on the run this year, so this game likely sets up as Pittsburgh's passing against Tampa's ground game.

  • PIT: 60% fourth-down conversion rate to TB's 28.6%

    31.4 PP

Pittsburgh converts 60% of fourth downs to Tampa Bay's 28.6% over five games. Both teams were closer last season, 52.2% and 44.8%, and fourth-down rates swing on a few attempts. Tampa should bounce back some. For a bettor, it means Pittsburgh drives that stall near midfield have extended into points more often than Tampa's.

  • TB has 3 more days of rest

    7d vs 10d

Tampa Bay has three extra days after a bye, against a Pittsburgh team on a normal week that also has to travel. Three days is a modest cushion: enough for some extra treatment and film work, less than a full extra week. It is set by the schedule and won't shift. Weigh it as a small lean toward the home side's freshness rather than a big swing.

  • PIT (3-2) at TB (1-4)

    -14 PT GAP

Pittsburgh is 3-2 but only +2 and 0-2 on the road. Tampa Bay is 1-4 at -12 and 0-3 at home, which is a hard split to explain away. Both teams won their last game. Pittsburgh's record overstates how much better it has been, so this looks closer than the 3-2 against 1-4 suggests.

  • GARY'S PICK
    JAYLEN WARRENRECEIVING YARDS OVER 26.5
    NFLPittsburgh Steelers· -117

    Jaylen Warren
    Receiving Yards over 26.5

    -117 · CASHED · ACTUAL 28

    Pittsburgh Steelers

Jaylen Warren over 26.5 receiving yards at -117.

Pittsburgh comes into Tampa with almost no receivers. Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson are on injured reserve, Ben Skowronek is out, and DK Metcalf missed Friday's practice with an illness. Pat Freiermuth is carrying a calf issue. Outside of Germie Bernard, the rest of the receiver room is practice squad call-ups. Aaron Rodgers gets the ball out on time, and his most dependable answer this year has been his running back. Warren leads the Steelers in receiving through five games, he has drawn four to six targets in every one of them, and he has been on the field for nearly every offensive snap the last three weeks. His receiving totals this season run from the high 20s up to the 87 he put on Indianapolis.

The matchup pushes the ball his way. Tampa ranks second in the league against the run, so the cleanest way for Pittsburgh to get Warren into space is to throw it to him in the flat. Larry Foote said as much this week: "they're just dumping it to him." Tampa's linebacker play has been shaky, Alex Anzalone struggled badly to wrap up early in the season, and Antoine Winfield Jr. is out at safety. Warren makes the first man miss, and one screen that breaks covers this number on its own.

The case against is real. Tampa has kept running backs to short gains after the catch, allowing 27 catches for 178 yards to the position across five games. Rico Dowdle is slated to return from a toe injury, and in the first two weeks with Dowdle active, Warren's snaps dropped. This is also a five-game sample under a new staff; last season Warren was a much smaller piece of the passing game. If Metcalf and Freiermuth both play full games, the targets could spread out. I still think a thin receiver room against a stout run front makes Warren the outlet all afternoon, and 26.5 asks for three or four ordinary catches.

  • GARY'S PICK
    JALON DANIELSRUSHING YARDS UNDER 32.5
    NFLTampa Bay Buccaneers· -113

    Jalon Daniels
    Rushing Yards under 32.5

    -113 · LOST · ACTUAL 39

    Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Jalon Daniels under 32.5 rushing yards at -113.

Daniels can run, and nobody is arguing otherwise. The undrafted rookie went for 55 yards on eight carries against Green Bay in his first start. The sample behind him is thin, though: two full starts and a few snaps of relief. In Dallas, when Tampa found a plan that worked, it handed the ball to Bucky Irving 21 times and Daniels ran seven times for 23 yards. This offense wants its rookie playing short and safe and letting Irving carry the load, and that is exactly what I expect again in his third start.

Pittsburgh is also the wrong defense for a quarterback looking to pad his rushing total. The Steelers have given up 56 rushing yards to quarterbacks across five games combined, and that group includes Drake Maye and Deshaun Watson. T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith set hard edges, and against an undrafted rookie I expect Pittsburgh to rush to contain and keep him in the pocket. If Tampa wins this game the way I think it can, the last few snaps will be kneel-downs that take yards off his total.

The risk is pressure turning into scrambles. Tampa's line gives up sacks at one of the worst rates in the league, and when Watt flushes a quarterback with Daniels' legs, a broken play can go for 20 yards in a hurry. If Tampa falls behind and needs Daniels to create, his carries climb. One long scramble beats this ticket. I'm siding with a run-first game plan built around Irving and a Pittsburgh front that has kept every quarterback it has faced quiet on the ground.
