The read
The Bills come west off an overtime win on Monday night to face a Raiders team still stinging from a 45-17 beating in New England. That's exactly when a number gets pushed too far, and I'll take the points with Las Vegas.
Start with the recency. The last thing anyone saw was Buffalo winning on national TV and the Raiders getting run off the field. Las Vegas isn't as good as its 3-0 start, but it isn't as bad as the last two weeks either. Laying 5.5 asks a road team with a leaky defense to win by margin.
That defense is the heart of it. Buffalo ranks 31st in EPA allowed (+0.13) and 28th in points allowed (28.2). The Bills keep landing in tight games: 37-34 in overtime, 36-31, and a 26-29 loss. They score plenty, but they give plenty back. A Raiders loss by a field goal, or by four or five, still cashes.
Las Vegas has the matchup to stay close. Kirk Cousins has posted +0.25, +0.19 and +0.30 EPA per dropback over the last three games. That includes the blowout, where the defense was the problem, not the offense. Brock Bowers (24 catches, 312 yards, 3 TDs) gets a Bills secondary without Jordan Hancock and possibly without Dee Alford. Ashton Jeanty could face an interior missing Ed Oliver and T.J. Sanders.
The situation helps too. The Raiders have 7 days at home, while the Bills have 6 after an overtime Monday game and another trip west. Las Vegas also kicks well, at 11/12 on field goals with a long of 59, so a late field goal to slip inside the number is realistic.
The risk is real. Josh Allen against Cousins is a big quarterback gap, Buffalo has the league's best offense at 7.1 yards per play, and the Raiders' defense allowed +0.40 EPA last week. Their takeaways have cooled to 0 and 1 over the last two games. But the spread already prices in Allen. Expect a Bills win in a high-scoring game, with the Raiders inside the number.

QUARTERBACK
Josh Allen is the projected starting quarterback for BUF
9.05 Y/AThrough 5 games in 2026, Josh Allen threw for 1249 passing yards, completed 65.9% of his passes and averaged 9.05 yards per attempt. Last season over 17 games he threw for 3668 yards, completed 69.3% and averaged 7.97 yards per attempt, 25-10 touchdowns to interceptions. This season's 7-4 touchdown-to-interception line is 5 games in.
Kirk Cousins is the projected starting quarterback for LV
7.38 Y/AThrough 5 games in 2026, Kirk Cousins threw for 1269 passing yards, completed 65.1% of his passes and averaged 7.38 yards per attempt. Last season over 10 games he threw for 1721 yards, completed 61.7% and averaged 6.4 yards per attempt, 10-5 touchdowns to interceptions. This season's 12-4 touchdown-to-interception line is 5 games in.
TRENCHES
BUF: 108.2 rushing yards allowed per game to LV's 140.6
32.4 YPGBuffalo holds opponents to 108.2 rushing yards a game through 5 games, while Las Vegas allows 140.6. Run totals depend on script, and teams playing from behind usually face fewer carries. The Raiders' run defense has been the softer one, so Buffalo's ground game sets up as a way to control this one.
PACE & SCRIPT
BUF @ LV carries a 53.5 market total
53.5The market expects this one to be a shootout, with a number that sits among the highest on the board and well clear of a typical game this week. That price assumes both offenses move the ball and finish drives, so the under needs long, stalled possessions or red-zone failures to have a chance. When a total sits this far above the pack, the useful question is whether either defense can force punts early.
BUF: 32.8 points per game to LV's 26.4
6.4 PPGBUF is at 32.8 points per game over 5 games; LV is at 26.4 over 5 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 17. Last season BUF was at 28.3 over 17 games and LV at 14.2 over 17 games.
LV: 65 offensive plays per game to BUF's 59
6 PLAYSBUF is at 59 offensive plays per game over 5 games; LV is at 65 over 5 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 17. Last season BUF was at 63.6 over 17 games and LV at 55.8 over 17 games.
TURNOVERS
LV: 2 takeaways per game to BUF's 1
1 TOLas Vegas forces 2 turnovers a game and Buffalo 1, over five games each. Takeaways swing heavily from week to week, so the Raiders' rate is likely to cool. A turnover or two can flip a game against a stronger offense, but betting on it repeating is betting on luck holding.
EXPLOSIVE PLAYS
BUF: 6.78 yards per play to LV's 5.16
1.62 Y/PBuffalo is moving the ball at a clip well above its 5.94 from last season, and Josh Allen's last game had 6 completions of 20+ yards, including a 57-yarder to Khalil Shakir. Las Vegas has climbed from 4.35 last season to 5.16, with Kirk Cousins spreading chunk throws to Ashton Jeanty and Brock Bowers. Buffalo's number may cool toward last year's over a full season, but in this game the Bills are the side more likely to win on explosive plays.
RED ZONE
BUF: 71.4% red-zone scoring rate to LV's 55.6%
15.9 PPBUF is at 71.4% red-zone scoring rate over 5 games; LV is at 55.6% over 5 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 17. Last season BUF was at 66.2% over 17 games and LV at 50% over 17 games.
MISMATCH
BUF: 158 rush yards a game to LV's 82
158 VS 82Buffalo runs for 158 yards a game to Las Vegas's 82 through 5 games, and this looks real: last season it was 159.6 for Buffalo and 77.5 for Las Vegas. Both teams are carbon copies of their full-season selves, so expect it to hold. Las Vegas cannot match Buffalo's ground game, so the Raiders have to stay close through the air. If Buffalo gets an early lead, its running game can shorten the afternoon.
COVERAGE
LV: 236.4 passing yards allowed per game to BUF's 280.4
44 YPGLas Vegas allows 236.4 passing yards a game over 5 games, and Buffalo gives up 280.4. Passing totals swing with game script, since trailing teams throw more, and the sheet doesn't show opponents. Buffalo's number suggests the Raiders can find yards through the air if they fall behind, which is the angle for Vegas passing props.
BUF: 5.52 yards per play allowed to LV's 6.1
0.58 Y/PBUF is at 5.52 yards per play allowed over 5 games; LV is at 6.1 over 5 games. Those are what each defense has allowed in this season's games through Oct 17.
REPLACEMENT
Dont'e Thornton Jr. (WR) is ir-r for LV
IR-RDont'e Thornton Jr. stays on injured reserve with a hamstring injury and will not be activated for Sunday's game against Buffalo, reported Oct 16. IR-R means he is eligible to return but the team chose not to bring him back yet, so he is out this week. The Raiders receivers already active keep his targets against the Bills.
Carter Runyon (TE) is ir-r for LV
IR-RLas Vegas tight end Carter Runyon, on injured reserve with a lower body injury, is ruled out for Sunday against Buffalo, per the Oct 17 report. IR-R means he is eligible to come back but will not this week. The other Raiders tight ends keep handling the blocking and short targets he would have shared.

BUF (4-1) at LV (3-2)
-20 PT GAPBuffalo is 2-0 on the road with a +23 differential. Las Vegas has dropped two straight and its +3 at 3-2 says the Raiders are about average. A team that has lost two in a row with a thin differential is more likely to slide than climb. Buffalo's road form and scoring margin make it the more reliable side in this spot.
BUF: 24 first downs per game to LV's 20.6
3.4 FDBUF is at 24 first downs per game over 5 games; LV is at 20.6 over 5 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 17. Last season BUF was at 22 over 17 games and LV at 15.1 over 17 games.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKJOSH ALLENPASSING COMPLETIONS UNDER 20.5
Josh Allen under 20.5 completions at -105. This number asks for a volume passing day from a quarterback whose offense has stopped needing one.
Look at his five games this year: 20, 20, 16, 23 and 12 completions, an average of 18.2 on about 27.6 attempts a game. Brady's offense leans on the run. Buffalo ran 37 times against the Rams with only 21 dropbacks, and James Cook (95 carries, 5.6 a carry) plus Allen's legs have carried the team while the passing game sorts itself out. Allen said himself he's working through mechanical issues, and only one of his 12 completions in Los Angeles traveled more than 10 yards in the air.
The matchup pushes the same way. Las Vegas gives up 140.6 rushing yards a game and got run over by Kansas City and New England. If I'm Brady, I hand Cook the ball 20-plus times, let Allen scramble, and keep my defense off a field where it has already logged the second-most snaps in the league. Both DJ Moore and Joshua Palmer are questionable with shoulder injuries, so even if they suit up, the receiver room Allen trusts may be limited. Last week the wideouts combined for four catches.
The case against this is real. The Raiders' pass defense allows 7.9 yards an attempt and gives tight ends plenty of room, and Allen said this week he wants to take the underneath throws early to get Dalton Kincaid going. Short completions add up fast. If Las Vegas keeps the game close, which I expect, Buffalo can't simply run out the clock in the second half, and a shootout could push his attempts into the 30s. A healthy Moore would also change the target picture.
Still, this offense wins with the run, and five games of evidence say Allen lives below this line. I'll take the under at near even money.
- GARY'S PICKASHTON JEANTYRUSHING YARDS UNDER 55.5
Ashton Jeanty under 55.5 rushing yards at -113. The line asks for more than his efficiency has produced against weaker fronts.
Jeanty is the clear RB1, with 88 carries over five games, but those carries have gone for 291 yards, 3.3 a carry. Since the Miami opener, his games read 48, 56, 58 and 27. The Raiders rank dead last in yards per carry as a team. The problem is up front: Jeanty averages about 0.3 yards before contact, and left guard Spencer Burford has struggled in the run game. Buffalo's front is the best in the league at closing that space, allowing about 0.4 yards before contact. Running backs have managed 432 yards on 118 carries against the Bills this year, and the Lions and Rams backfields were held to 66 and 77 team rushing yards.
The math works against him even with a full workload. At his season rate, Jeanty needs roughly 17 carries to clear this number, and his carry count has dropped from 23 to 21 to 19 to 15 to 10. Mike Washington Jr. has been the more efficient runner on 25 carries, and Dylan Laube's role grew in New England. Both chip away at Jeanty's share.
The risk on this side: Kubiak spent the week talking about not being one-dimensional, and Jeanty says he feels a lot better after the ankle and foot trouble. His two home games produced 102 and 58 yards. Buffalo's defense has played a heavy snap load, comes in on a short week after overtime, and Ed Oliver and T.J. Sanders are both questionable on the interior. If the Raiders stay close and keep feeding him, one long run could flip this.
Betting on the scheme to finally click against the best run front for limiting yards before contact is a reach. I'll take the under.
