The read

My bet is that Washington's run defense stops the Colts' main plan, and that leaves Indianapolis needing its weakest unit to win by five or more.

The Colts want to run the ball. They have a -4.61 pass rate over expected, and Jonathan Taylor has a league-high 66 carries. But Taylor is off to a career-worst start: 3.91 yards per carry and no 100-yard game yet. Washington's run defense is the best-measured unit on either team. It allows 82 rushing yards a game (3rd in the NFL) and 3.8 yards per carry. It stops 25% of runs at or behind the line (1st per Next Gen Stats) and ranks 1st in FTN's run-defense DVOA. Seattle came in with the 9th-ranked rushing offense, ran 18 times for 44 yards, then stopped running.

If Taylor gets stuffed on early downs, Daniel Jones has to win through the air, and I don't trust that. Jones has 5 giveaways in three games: 3 interceptions (one in every game) and 2 lost fumbles. Indianapolis is -5 in turnovers. Jones has a 48.6 QBR and 611 passing yards. He plays behind a line that ranks 27th in pass-block win rate, and Washington blitzes on 42.2% of snaps. The receivers have also thinned out. Alec Pierce is on IR, and Keenan Allen (73% of snaps in Week 3) is out. That leaves Josh Downs and Tyler Warren with Laquon Treadwell or Darius Slayton outside. Through three games the Colts' offense is -0.06 EPA per play and -0.11 on early downs, both worse than Washington's.

On the number: the line opened Indianapolis -3.5 and only reached -4.5 late Saturday, after the Allen and McLaurin reports. Daniels being out is not new. Marcus Mariota already started and beat Seattle, and has 4 TD, 0 INT and a 67.0 QBR this season. Laying more than a field goal on a neutral field in London asks a lot of a team whose results so far are a loss by 18, an overtime loss by 3 and a win by 2. The Colts' defense allows 0.172 EPA per play, the worst of either side, and gave up 500+ yards twice. Holding Houston to 223 yards was one game against a team that came in 0-2. Taking +4.5 covers a 3- or 4-point Colts win and also cashes if Washington wins.

The best case against this bet: Washington is badly hurt. Laremy Tunsil, Sam Cosmi, Rachaad White, Nick Cross and Leo Chenal are out, and Terry McLaurin is expected to miss. The interior line is patched together, with Allegretti and Patrick both questionable, against DeForest Buckner, who has 3 sacks. Washington's pass defense allows 8.6 yards per attempt and has given up 11 passing TDs. The Seattle win needed a +3 turnover margin, and Washington was outgained by nearly 200 yards. Mariota's 2025 fill-in run (7 INT and 6 fumbles in 11 games) is a real risk. Colts kicker Spencer Shrader is 8/8 (3/3 from 50+), while Washington is 5/7 on field goals and 75% on extra points.

I still side with Washington. Those passing yards came against Philadelphia, Dallas and Seattle, and this short-handed Colts passing game is not in that class. Right now the turnover risk sits more with Jones than with Mariota.

On price: -114 is worse than the exchanges (about -102 at +4.5), so I see this as a modest edge, not a max bet. The moneyline at +188 is about the same as the exchange price (+190), so there's no extra value there.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

QUARTERBACK

  • Marcus Mariota is the projected starting quarterback for WSH

    6.25 Y/A

Through 2 games in 2026, Marcus Mariota threw for 294 passing yards, completed 63.8% of his passes and averaged 6.25 yards per attempt. Last season over 11 games he threw for 1695 yards, completed 61.2% and averaged 7.47 yards per attempt, 10-7 touchdowns to interceptions. This season's 4-0 touchdown-to-interception line is 2 games in.

  • Daniel Jones is the projected starting quarterback for IND

    6.24 Y/A

Through 3 games in 2026, Daniel Jones threw for 611 passing yards, completed 66.3% of his passes and averaged 6.24 yards per attempt. Last season over 13 games he threw for 3101 yards, completed 68% and averaged 8.08 yards per attempt, 19-8 touchdowns to interceptions. This season's 3-3 touchdown-to-interception line is 3 games in.

TRENCHES

  • WSH: 82 rushing yards allowed per game to IND's 141.3

    59.3 YPG

Washington has allowed 82 rushing yards a game, and Indianapolis has given up 141.3. Both numbers come from three games, so an early run-heavy opponent or two can swing them. If the split holds, Washington should find room on the ground while the Colts have a tougher time running. Bettors can lean on this when sizing up rushing props and which side controls the clock.

PASS RUSH

  • WSH: 2.7 sack yards lost per game to IND's 13.7

    11 YDS

Washington has lost 2.7 yards a game to sacks through three games, down from 12.5 last season, while the Colts are at 13.7, near their 15.1. Washington's number looks too good to last over a full season and should climb back. The Colts give up more yards behind the line, which makes their drives easier for Washington's defense to stall.

  • WSH: 1 sack taken per game to IND's 2

    1 SACKS

IND is at 2 sacks taken per game over 3 games; WSH is at 1 over 3 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 3. Last season IND was at 2.07 over 17 games and WSH at 2.31 over 17 games.

  • IND: 2.33 sacks recorded per game to WSH's 1.67

    0.67 SACKS

IND is at 2.33 sacks recorded per game over 3 games; WSH is at 1.67 over 3 games. Those are what each defense has allowed in this season's games through Oct 3.

TURNOVERS

  • WSH: 1 takeaways per game to IND's 0.33

    0.67 TO

Washington's defense has forced one turnover a game across 3 games, while Indianapolis has managed 0.33, so one takeaway total in three weeks. Turnovers swing on tipped balls and loose fumbles, and three games is a tiny sample for something that random. Neither number says much about who these units are yet. If you are weighing this game, give Washington a slight edge in extra possessions but do not price it as a reliable advantage.

MISMATCH

  • WSH: 0.33 turnovers a game to IND's 2

    0.33 VS 2

Over three games, Indianapolis has given the ball away about twice a game, while Washington has nearly stopped coughing it up. Both teams sat at 1.35 last season over 17 games, so neither number is who these teams are yet: Washington will likely give a few back and the Colts should clean some up. Three games is a short run, but extra possessions at home matter, so watch whether the Colts keep handing Washington short fields.

COVERAGE

  • IND: 36.4% third downs allowed to WSH's 47.1%

    10.7 PP

Indianapolis allows 36.4% on third down, and Washington gives up 47.1%. That is three games each, so expect both to move toward the middle. For now the Colts offense should find it easier to stay on the field, which matters for drive length and who controls tempo in this one.

REPLACEMENT

  • Jayden Daniels (QB) is inactive for WSH

    INACTIVE

Daniels sits against the Colts with an elbow injury, but the report says he is set to practice fully this week with the aim of playing the Giants on Oct 11. For this game, Washington plays without its starting quarterback. For next week, a full practice week is a good sign he returns.

  • Terry McLaurin (WR) is inactive for WSH

    INACTIVE

McLaurin is out for the Colts game in London. Dan Quinn said he pushed to play through his hamstring, but the team held him out, and Washington has been careful with that injury. Without its top receiver, Washington's passing game loses its most reliable target, so lean on that when looking at their passing numbers.

  • Alec Pierce (WR) is on injured reserve for IND

    IR

Pierce is on injured reserve with a left heel injury, and Shane Steichen said Monday he did not have surgery and is still rehabbing. Injured reserve keeps him out for this game against Washington, so the Colts' receiving work goes to the rest of the room. No return date is on the sheet, so nothing about his timeline should factor into this game.

  • Leo Chenal (LB) is on injured reserve for WSH

    IR

Washington put Chenal on injured reserve Tuesday with a neck injury, so he will not play against Indianapolis. No replacement is named in the report, so his snaps at linebacker go to the next man on the depth chart. Factor in that the Commanders are down a linebacker when looking at this matchup.

  • Micheal Clemons (DE) is on injured reserve for IND

    IR

The Colts placed Clemons on injured reserve on Sep 23 with a toe injury, so he is out against Washington. The report does not name who takes his snaps at defensive end. His absence is already a known part of Indianapolis' defensive front, not a fresh change this week.

SITUATIONAL

  • IND: 1.67 fourth-down attempts per game to WSH's 1

    0.67 ATT/G

IND is at 1.67 fourth-down attempts per game over 3 games; WSH is at 1 over 3 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 3. Last season IND was at 1.59 over 17 games and WSH at 1.53 over 17 games.

  • IND: 33.3 penalty yards per game to WSH's 46.7

    13.3 YDS

IND is at 33.3 penalty yards per game over 3 games; WSH is at 46.7 over 3 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 3. Last season IND was at 51.2 over 17 games and WSH at 53.7 over 17 games.

  • IND (1-2) at WSH (1-2)

    +2 PT GAP

These two look almost identical: both 1-2, both coming off a win, with Indianapolis at -19 and Washington at -17. Washington won its only home game and the Colts lost their only road game, each just one game. With margins this close, home field is about the only separation on the sheet. A short number fits two teams this evenly matched.

    CHIG OKONKWORECEIVING YARDS UNDER 29.5
    NFLWashington Commanders· -111

    Chig Okonkwo
    Receiving Yards under 29.5

    -111 · CASHED · ACTUAL 5

    Washington Commanders

I'm taking Chig Okonkwo under 29.5 receiving yards at -111. He has played one game this season, and he is coming back on a hamstring.

That one game was Week 1 at Philadelphia: 39 of 70 snaps, 3 targets, 2 catches, 16 yards. He then missed two games. He was limited in Thursday's practice and carried a questionable tag into the weekend. The book opened him at 26.5 in Week 1, and he fell well short. Now he has two missed weeks and a soft-tissue injury, and the number has gone up three yards. I'd lean the other way.

The bigger issue is the tight end room. Washington got along without him. In the Seattle win, John Bates, Ben Sinnott and Colson Yankoff each played roughly half the offensive snaps. The whole group has 8 catches for 60 yards through three games. A first game back from a hamstring usually means a rotation and a managed snap count, inside an offense that already spreads the ball around. Against Seattle, Marcus Mariota threw touchdowns to Rachaad White and Treylon Burks, and Jaylin Lane had a 21-yard screen. Stefon Diggs and Antonio Williams have been the scoring targets. Washington also passes less than expected in neutral spots. Thirty yards is a lot to ask of a part-time tight end in a run-leaning offense.

The strongest case for the over is real. Terry McLaurin is expected to miss, which frees up targets. Indianapolis has allowed 20 catches on 27 targets and 204 yards to tight ends in three games. The Colts play a lot of man coverage, and Akeem Davis-Gaither is questionable, which could leave Okonkwo against a linebacker. He also averaged 34.2 yards a game across ten games last year. One catch in space beats this line.

I still think the snap count limits him first, and a split room limits him second. The sample this season is a single game, so I'm keeping this at standard size.

  • GARY'S PICK
    MARCUS MARIOTARUSHING ATTEMPTS UNDER 5.5
    NFLWashington Commanders· -135

    Marcus Mariota
    Rushing Attempts under 5.5

    -135 · CASHED · ACTUAL 1

    Washington Commanders

I'm on Marcus Mariota under 5.5 rushing attempts at -135. At that number he can carry five times and the ticket still cashes.

Here is what he has done this season. In his only full game, the 33-31 win over Seattle, he ran five times for 11 yards. The last of those was the third-and-7 keeper that ended the game. At Dallas he came in after Jayden Daniels got hurt, played 32 snaps and ran once. That's two games, one of them a half. In his 12th season, he stood in the pocket against Seattle, threw 31 passes and got the ball out quickly. His running now comes in spots.

The matchup supports that. Indianapolis has faced Baltimore, Kansas City and Houston, and the quarterbacks in those three games combined for 67 rushing yards. Washington's line has allowed 3 sacks on 116 dropbacks. Clean pockets mean fewer broken plays that turn into scrambles. The designed carries go to Jacory Croskey-Merritt, with Austin Ekeler re-signed and Craig Reynolds elevated now that Rachaad White is out. Against a Colts run defense giving up 141.3 yards a game, I expect Washington to give the ball to its backs, not its 33-year-old quarterback.

The case against has three parts. First, his fill-in run last season included games with 8 and 10 carries, and his 2025 average across ten appearances was right at 5.0. Second, the Colts play man coverage at one of the league's highest rates, and their pressure comes up the middle from DeForest Buckner and Adetomiwa Adebawore. Washington's interior is patched, with Sam Cosmi out and Nick Allegretti and Lucas Patrick both questionable, and that pressure can push him out of the pocket and into open lanes. Third, kneel-downs count as rushing attempts. If Washington closes out a lead, which is how my spread ticket wins outright, two or three kneels can turn a four-carry day into six.

The -135 price is steep. I'm still taking a fifth carry as my cushion against a quarterback who has run once and five times this season.
