The read

It's the Blackout in Lincoln: a 7 PM kickoff under overcast skies, both teams fresh off a bye, and Washington still won't say who's playing quarterback. Nebraska is the better team. Laying 7.5 is a different question.

Nebraska's offense stalls against real defenses. The last two games produced 17 points against Indiana and 14 at Oregon, and Oregon was starting backup Brock Thomas (9-of-20, 54 yards). The Huskers led both in the fourth quarter, lost both by 3, and were outscored 25-7 in those fourth quarters. Their blowout Big Ten wins came against Michigan State and Maryland, both now 2-6.

The roster is thinner now. Starting lineman Gunnar Gottula is out with a concussion, and Paul Mubenga hasn't started since Oct 3. DL Anthony Jones Jr. and S Jamir Conn are out, the running back room is battered, and Jacory Barney Jr. and Brendan Black are playing hurt. Kicking matters near this number. In the box scores we have, Kyle Cunanan is 4-of-7 on field goals and Washington's Tyler Robles is 5-of-5.

Washington can hit big plays. They had ten of 20-plus yards at Purdue, and Nebraska's secondary gave Indiana 263 passing yards on 22 attempts. The Huskies also hang with good teams: they lost by 3 to Minnesota and by 4 at USC.

The risk is real. Washington's line gave up 7 sacks to Minnesota, 6 to Iowa and 5 to USC, and center Landen Hatchett is out for the season. Nebraska's defense has held opponents to 9-of-61 on third down. Elijah Brown threw 3 picks at Purdue, and Nebraska won't forgive that.

I'd rather see Brown start. The scary version is Demond Williams Jr. behind this line with a healing rib. Most of the value is the half-point over a touchdown. I'll take Washington.

The research

QUARTERBACK

  • Anthony Colandrea is NEB's projected starter

    7.12 Y/A

Anthony Colandrea is NEB's projected starting quarterback. The Seattle Times preview (Oct 30) calls Colandrea Nebraska's starter: 1,570 passing yards, 14 TD, 334 rushing yards, and held to 164 yards in a 17-14 loss to Oregon. In comments reported Oct 27, OC Dana Holgorsen called him a 'warrior', said he was 'bouncing around at practice', and told him to 'keep playing your ass off.' SI's Oct 30 preview also discusses him. No opened source has the team formally saying he starts. No injury from the Oregon game or limited practice this week was reported in the sources opened. 2026 line: 1560 passing yards, 62.6% completions, 7.12 yards per attempt, 14-4 TD-INT over 7 games.

MISMATCH

  • NEB: 194.4 rush yards a game to WASH's 104

    194.4 VS 104

Nebraska is running for 194.4 yards a game, up from 145.9 last season, while Washington has dropped to 104 from 165.5. That is a big swing for both over seven games, so Washington's slide stands out most. Nebraska can lean on the run at home and keep drives going. Washington has to hide a run game that has lost its punch, which puts the load on its passing in this spot.

SITUATIONAL

  • NEB: 50.5% third-down conversion rate to WASH's 33.3%

    17.2 PP

Nebraska converts about half its third downs while Washington is at a third, which means Nebraska keeps drives alive and Washington stalls. Washington was at 50.3% last season, so a 33.3% mark over seven games is a sharp drop that could recover. Nebraska rose from 46%. Washington's third-down rate is the number more likely to move, toward last season's level.

TEAM RECORD

  • Big Ten game: WASH 1-3, NEB 2-2 in conference

    CONFERENCE

These two share the Big Ten. WASH is 1-3 against it, NEB is 2-2. 2026 standings through 2026-10-31.
