The read

It's Halloween night at Acrisure Stadium, and two banged-up teams are "starving for a win." Pitt has lost three straight and still hasn't named a quarterback, so the public will want the 7.5. I think the number is short.

Start with the common opponents. Pitt lost by 6 at Boston College despite 13 penalties for 133 yards, 3 giveaways and an 0-for-3 night in the red zone. Georgia Tech lost to that same BC team by 22 at home. Pitt won by 2 at Virginia Tech, and Georgia Tech lost there by 10. Those are gaps of 16 and 12 points, and tonight Pitt is home.

Pitt's skid is mostly self-inflicted. The Panthers scored 17, 21 and 23 while gaining 381 yards against UNC and 395 at BC, but kept handing the ball over (2, 3 and 1 giveaways). Georgia Tech can't punish that: it has one takeaway in six FBS games.

The Yellow Jackets' defense is the worst unit on the field, allowing 33.5 points a game against FBS teams. Riley, Terry, Felton and Kiker are out in the secondary, White and Mitchell are questionable, and Brent Key admits the team is leaning on first-year players. Cataurus Hicks just went for 149 and 135 yards. Edge rusher Noah Carter is out, and GT has 1 sack or fewer in five of six FBS games.

The turnover math runs the other way too. Georgia Tech has 9 giveaways in six FBS games, and Pitt's defense has 11 takeaways in seven. GT also lost OL Kevin Peay Jr. and Ethan Mackenny for the season, so Josh Petty makes a first career start at left tackle.

The schedule favors Pitt. The Panthers are home with a bye next, so there's no lookahead. Georgia Tech is 2-5, traveling about 520 miles, with Louisville up next.

The risks are real. Pitt's quarterback is unconfirmed, and its pass defense has allowed 249-plus yards in four straight games. Red-zone field goals can leave a favorite stuck at 6. GT gets DTs Tawfiq Thomas and Vincent Carroll-Jackson back after both missed BC's 400-yard rushing day. Georgia Tech also kept its road losses to 7 and 10. If Damon Ferguson Jr. can't go, play this smaller.

Still, this defense forces almost nothing, and Pitt's main problem has been giving the ball away. Lay the 7.5 with Pitt.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

QUARTERBACK

  • Alberto Mendoza is GT's confirmed starter

    7.97 Y/A

Alberto Mendoza is GT's confirmed starting quarterback. Georgia Tech's depth chart for the Pitt game (reported Oct. 27) lists Mendoza as the starter and Grady Adamson as the backup. AJC (Oct. 30) also describes Mendoza as the starter and reports no injury or limitation. In the Boston College loss he threw two interceptions and was pulled in the fourth quarter (Oct. 29). No opened source reports an injury in that game or limited practice this week. 2026 line: 1714 passing yards, 71.2% completions, 7.97 yards per attempt, 10-6 TD-INT over 7 games.

  • Holden Geriner is PITT's projected starter

    6.92 Y/A

Holden Geriner is PITT's projected starting quarterback. Not confirmed by the team in a source dated within eight days. Mason Heintschel tore his ACL on Oct. 2 and is out for the season. Since then Geriner and Corey Dailey have both played, each throwing two interceptions in the three-game losing streak (Field Level Media, Oct. 29). SI (Oct. 27) names no definite starter for this game: Geriner threw for 268 yards and a TD against Miami, and Dailey came in late and went 3-for-3 with a TD. Narduzzi called the quarterback play 'a step forward' but not yet good enough to win (Oct. 29). Background: on Oct. 5 Narduzzi said Geriner 'will be our starting quarterback' (older than eight days, so it does not confirm this week). No injury to Geriner in the last game or limited practice this week was found in the opened sources. 2026 line: 706 passing yards, 62.7% completions, 6.92 yards per attempt, 3-2 TD-INT over 5 games.

TRENCHES

  • PITT: 66 rushing yards allowed per game to GT's 210.4

    144.4 YPG

Pitt allows 66 rushing yards a game over 8 games, and Georgia Tech gives up 210.4 over 7. That is a run defense that shuts things down against one that gets pushed around most weeks. The sheet gives no schedule detail, so the Pitt number may be helped by the offenses it has seen, but 8 games is a real sample. Georgia Tech's offense will likely have to throw more than it wants, which matters for how this game's pace and total play out.

PACE & SCRIPT

  • PITT: 20.9 points allowed per game to GT's 30.3

    9.4 PPG

Georgia Tech is allowing 30.3 points a game, worse than 25 last season, while Pitt has tightened to 20.9 over eight games from 24.8. Both moves point the same way and have most of a season behind them, so they look meaningful. Pitt at home has the steadier defense, and Georgia Tech's needs to show it can get stops before you trust it in a low total.

TURNOVERS

  • PITT: 1.38 takeaways per game to GT's 0.43

    0.95 TO

Pitt's defense forces more than one turnover a game across 8 games, while Georgia Tech's sits under one every other game across 7. No opponent detail is on the sheet, so schedule strength can't be separated from skill here. Takeaways swing a lot game to game, so the gap can shrink fast. For this game, Pitt has the better chance of a short field, and Georgia Tech's offense has to protect the ball at Pitt.

MISMATCH

  • PITT: 20.9 points allowed a game to GT's 30.3

    20.9 VS 30.3

The widest gap between these two is points allowed a game: GT's defense allowed 30.3 points a game over 7 games; PITT's defense allowed 20.9 points a game over 8 games this season. Last season GT was at 25 over 13 games and PITT at 24.8 over 13 games.

COVERAGE

  • GT: 197.1 passing yards allowed per game to PITT's 265.3

    68.1 YPG

GT is at 197.1 passing yards allowed per game over 7 games; PITT is at 265.3 over 8 games. Those are what each defense has allowed in this season's games through Oct 30.
