The read

It's rivalry week in Logan for the 81st meeting, with rain moving in after kickoff and both teams chasing bowl eligibility. Utah State is laying 7.5, and I'm taking the points.

Start with the Aggies' offense. They've scored 17, 17, 18, 21, 0, 14 and 17. That's never more than 21 and under 15 a game, and their two wins came by 1 and 11. Now Eli Wood is out, taking 37 of their 117 catches, 479 of their 1,351 passing yards and half of their 10 touchdown passes. Anthony Garcia filled in well at Texas State with 8 catches for 87 yards. But Grady Brosterhous has thrown for 206 yards or fewer in five of six starts, and this offense is 7-of-28 on third down over its last two games.

Colorado State gets Hauss Hejny back healthy. In the three games Hejny finished, the Rams scored 35, 58 and 56. Last week Hejny went 24-of-31 for 333 yards and three touchdowns, then added 85 yards and two more scores on the ground. RJ Vick is probable to return, Tommy Maher just posted 108 yards and two touchdowns, and this line has allowed three sacks all year.

Special teams tilt it too. Kian Afrookhteh is 6-of-10 on field goals, and the Aggies gave up a 100-yard kickoff return and had a punt blocked at Texas State. In a one-score game, that's the cover.

The risk is real. The Rams' defense is a sieve. Five of its six FBS opponents scored 41 or more, and the five not named Wyoming ran for between 204 and 503 yards. Robert Anae will feed Javen Jacobs. Texas State ran for 503 on Colorado State and 106 on Utah State. The Rams also lost both road games, 59-45 and 66-27, though K'saan Farrar was at quarterback for both.

Still, a ground-and-pound Aggies game means fewer possessions, and fewer possessions make an eight-point margin harder to reach. I see Utah State by 3 to 7. Watch Mel Brown, who is questionable and is the Rams' kick-return spark. The lean holds either way.

Colorado State +7.5.

Injuries noted

Colorado State Rams: Mel Brown (questionable) — Running back with an undisclosed injury, listed questionable on the Pac-12 availability report. He left the Oct 24 win over San Diego State and did not return. Cedric Ross would take his role if he sits.; Juice Vereen (doubtful) — Tight end with an undisclosed injury, listed doubtful on the Pac-12 availability report (RotoWire, Oct 28). The Coloradoan said Oct 29 he is expected to be out. He left the Oct 24 game. Dominic Toy is expected to take a larger role.; RJ Vick (probable) — Leading wide receiver. He missed two games with an undisclosed injury. RotoWire (Oct 29) reports he was cleared to play on the Pac-12 availability report, and the Coloradoan (Oct 29) lists him as probable.

Utah State Aggies: Eli Wood (out) — Senior wide receiver with an undisclosed injury, ruled out on the Pac-12 availability report (RotoWire, Oct 30). He will miss his first game of the season (37 catches, 479 yards, 5 TDs) and hopes to return against Fresno State. He was hurt and missed most of the Texas State game (Deseret News, Oct 30).

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

QUARTERBACK

  • Hauss Hejny is CSU's projected starter

    9.15 Y/A

Hauss Hejny is CSU's projected starting quarterback. The Fort Collins Coloradoan (Oct 29, 2026) and Denver Gazette (Oct 30, 2026) previews both treat Hejny as Colorado State's quarterback for Utah State but do not use the word 'starter.' The Denver Gazette says having him 'back healthy' helps the offense. Deseret News (Oct 30, 2026) says he missed about a month with a hamstring injury from the BYU loss and came back against San Diego State on Oct 24. Backup K'saan Farrar played while he was out. No opened source reports a new injury from the Oct 24 game or limited practice this week. 2026 line: 952 passing yards, 68.3% completions, 9.15 yards per attempt, 13-2 TD-INT over 4 games.

  • Grady Brosterhous is USU's projected starter

    6.29 Y/A

Grady Brosterhous is USU's projected starting quarterback. The Coloradoan (Oct 29, 2026), Denver Gazette (Oct 30, 2026) and Deseret News (Oct 30, 2026) previews all name Brosterhous as Utah State's quarterback, with the Deseret saying the offense needs him to 'level up.' None says Utah State announced him as the starter. He threw for 206 yards in the Oct 24 loss at Texas State (Standard-Examiner, Oct 24). No opened source reports an injury in that game or limited practice this week. 2026 line: 1120 passing yards, 55.6% completions, 6.29 yards per attempt, 7-6 TD-INT over 7 games.

TRENCHES

  • USU: 132.6 rushing yards allowed per game to CSU's 259.1

    126.6 YPG

Colorado State allows 259.1 rushing yards a game over 7 games, and Utah State gives up 132.6. That makes Utah State's run defense the far steadier unit, though 132.6 is ordinary on its own. Colorado State gets run on badly enough that Utah State's ground game should control long stretches. Expect Utah State to keep the ball and Colorado State to chase, a script that affects both the side and how long drives last.

  • CSU: 168.9 rushing yards per game to USU's 113.4

    55.4 YPG

CSU is at 168.9 rushing yards per game over 7 games; USU is at 113.4 over 7 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 30. Last season CSU was at 108.3 over 12 games and USU at 162.9 over 13 games.

PACE & SCRIPT

  • USU: 23 points allowed per game to CSU's 44

    21 PPG

Colorado State allows 44 points a game, while Utah State allows 23. The Rams were at 30.8 last season, so their defense got much worse, and Utah State improved from 28.7. Colorado State scores a lot and allows a lot, which points to high-scoring games. Utah State's offense has struggled this year, so this matchup tests whether a bad defense can help it break out.

  • CSU: 38.6 points per game to USU's 14.9

    23.7 PPG

Colorado State scores 38.6 a game while Utah State scores 14.9, a complete flip from last season when the Rams scored 18.5 and the Aggies 30.9. A swing that big over 7 games looks real, yet schedule strength could be inflating it. Colorado State's surge is the bigger outlier, so expect some pullback. Utah State's drop is steep enough that its home crowd may not save it.

  • CSU @ USU carries a 61.5 market total

    61.5

This total of 61.5 is 10 points above the 51.5 slate median across 33 games, which tells you the market expects both offenses to move the ball freely. A number this high needs touchdowns, not drives that bog down. If either side starts settling for kicks or the pace slows with long clock-eating possessions, the expectation starts to crack early.

TURNOVERS

  • CSU: 2 takeaways per game to USU's 1

    1 TO

Colorado State forces 2 turnovers a game over 7 games, and Utah State forces 1. Takeaway rates bounce around, so this edge is softer than a yardage gap. Colorado State's defense still gives it a way to steal possessions in a game where Utah State's run game has the upper hand. Turnovers are the most likely route for Colorado State to stay close, which adds variance to any Utah State spread.

MISMATCH

  • USU: 23 points allowed a game to CSU's 44

    23 VS 44

Colorado State is allowing 44 points a game over seven games, much worse than 30.8 last season, while Utah State has improved to 23 from 28.7. Colorado State's defense has collapsed this year, and seven games is a real stretch. Utah State's offense draws a defense that has given up points to everyone at home. Colorado State has to outscore its problems, so expect this game to lean on whether it can.

SITUATIONAL

  • CSU: 279.6 team passing yards per game to USU's 193

    86.6 YPG

Colorado State throws for 279.6 yards a game, up from 215.9 last season, while Utah State has dropped to 193 from 247. That's a style swap from last year, with Colorado State now the team leaning on the pass. Over 7 games both shifts look meaningful, though some pullback is likely. Passing props on the Rams carry more weight than they would have a year ago.

TEAM RECORD

  • Pac-12 game: CSU 1-2, USU 1-2 in conference

    CONFERENCE

These two share the Pac-12. CSU is 1-2 against it, USU is 1-2. 2026 standings through 2026-10-31.
