The read

Friday night under the lights in Bloomington, FOX in the building, and the defending national champions open Big Ten play against a 2-0 Northwestern team. Chip Kelly is calling its offense, and Aidan Chiles is fresh off Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week.

This number comes down to the line of scrimmage, and both lines tilt toward Indiana. Northwestern wants to win by keeping the ball. Kelly's offense runs for 203 yards a game and held the ball for 36:53 against Colorado. That plan is the underdog's best route to staying inside 19.5.

The problem is who is blocking for it. Even at full strength, Northwestern's runs were stuffed on 21.5% of carries. The line has now lost its lone returning starter, who started all 13 games last year and left the Colorado game hurt. Two more linemen and both tight ends are also on the report. That group meets an Indiana front that stuffs 27.0% of runs, has 26 tackles for loss in three games and allows 77 rushing yards a game. Stephen Daley and Kellan Wyatt sat out the 38-0 shutout of Western Kentucky and were cleared this week, so that front just got deeper.

When Northwestern falls behind the chains, drives stall, and the ball control that would shorten this game goes with them. Chiles is efficient at 11.17 yards per attempt. Northwestern ranks 12th on passing downs at 42.5%, and Indiana is thin at corner. So there is a chunk-play path. I don't trust it to carry four quarters behind a patched line.

The other side of the ball tells the same story. Northwestern's defense allows a 41.7% success rate, 90th in the country. It survives by limiting explosives and holding opponents to 1.583 points per scoring opportunity. Indiana is built to beat that approach. Its line gets push, Turbo Richard averages 7.7 a carry, and the Hoosiers score 5.682 points per opportunity, 4th nationally. Northwestern's disruption comes from its secondary, and starting nickel Braden Turner is doubtful. Four defensive linemen and four linebackers are also out. A defense that depends on making you drive the whole field loses its margin once the rotation thins in the second half.

Josh Hoover has 10 touchdowns and no interceptions but hasn't faced a real test yet. Neither team has: Indiana's schedule ranks 135th and Northwestern's 117th. So I lean on the opponent-adjusted numbers. Indiana is 4th in SP+ at 25.8 and top 3 in per-play value on both sides, 0.482 on offense and -0.224 on defense. Northwestern sits at 7.7. Those ratings don't account for this week's Northwestern injury report, and the new absences hit the units that decide this matchup.

Indiana ranks 124th in explosiveness allowed, so Northwestern will likely land a big play or two, and the -120 price leaves less cushion. Northwestern's secondary has five takeaways in two games, and Indiana has forced a turnover in 12 consecutive games. I'm taking the team that controls both lines of scrimmage at home.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

TRENCHES

  • IU: 77 rushing yards allowed per game to NU's 163.5

    86.5 YPG

Indiana has held opponents to 77 rushing yards a game across three games, while Northwestern has given up 163.5 over just two. There are no opponent details on the sheet, so we can't say how much of that gap is schedule, and two games is a thin read on Northwestern. If both numbers are close to real, Indiana's front can make Northwestern one-dimensional, and Indiana's backs should find more room on the other side.

PACE & SCRIPT

  • IU: 48.3 points per game to NU's 37.5

    10.8 PPG

Indiana is scoring 48.3 a game over three games, right in line with 41.6 over 16 games last season. Northwestern's 37.5 comes from just two games and sits far above its 23.4 from last year, so it is the number more likely to come down. Indiana's offense has a full season behind it, and Northwestern's early scoring has not yet been tested at that level.

  • IU: 5.3 points allowed per game to NU's 12.5

    7.2 PPG

NU is at 12.5 points allowed per game over 2 games; IU is at 5.3 over 3 games. Those are this season's games through Sep 24. Last season NU was at 19.8 over 13 games and IU at 11.7 over 16 games.

TURNOVERS

  • NU: 2.5 takeaways per game to IU's 1

    1.5 TO

Northwestern has forced 2.5 turnovers a game over two games, and Indiana's defense has forced one a game over three. Takeaways swing a lot from week to week, and a two-game rate is the kind of number that tends to come back toward the middle. Use it as a reason the game could get swingy on a short field, and lean more on the yardage numbers than on Northwestern forcing that many again.

MISMATCH

  • IU: 5.3 points allowed a game to NU's 12.5

    5.3 VS 12.5

Both defenses are stingy early, but Indiana is allowing 5.3 points a game over 3 games to Northwestern's 12.5 over just 2. Each side is well ahead of last season, when Indiana allowed 11.7 and Northwestern 19.8. Early schedules can flatter these numbers, and 2 games is a thin sample for Northwestern. Both should rise, but Indiana's base was already strong, so a low-scoring game with Northwestern struggling to find points fits the evidence best.

COVERAGE

  • IU: 126.3 passing yards allowed per game to NU's 226.5

    100.2 YPG

NU is at 226.5 passing yards allowed per game over 2 games; IU is at 126.3 over 3 games. Those are what each defense has allowed in this season's games through Sep 24.

  • IU: 27.3% third downs allowed to NU's 37.5%

    10.2 PP

NU is at 37.5% third downs allowed over 2 games; IU is at 27.3% over 3 games. Those are what each defense has allowed in this season's games through Sep 24.

SITUATIONAL

  • NU: 100% fourth-down conversion rate to IU's 66.7%

    33.3 PP

NU is at 100% fourth-down conversion rate over 2 games; IU is at 66.7% over 3 games. Those are this season's games through Sep 24. Last season NU was at 58.6% over 13 games and IU at 55.6% over 16 games.

  • Northwestern at No. 5 Indiana

    #5 AP

Indiana sits fifth in the country at 3-0 with 1467 poll points and 4 first-place votes, while Northwestern gets no votes at all, so voters see a wide gap between these sides. The trend is -1, meaning Indiana slipped a spot despite staying unbeaten, which suggests voters are not fully sold on the resume after three games. A ranked home favorite against an unranked visitor has more to lose than gain here, since a flat win can cost them another spot. That makes this a spot to ask whether the price reflects the ranking or the three games behind it.

    Josh Hoover
    Passing Yards under 251.5

    -115 · CASHED · ACTUAL 201

    Indiana

My side on this game is Indiana winning at the line of scrimmage, and that same script is why I'm fading Josh Hoover's yardage. The book has him at 251.5. Through three games he has 649 passing yards, about 216 a game. He's thrown only 51 passes in those three games, roughly 17 a week. That's not a quarterback carrying an offense. It's a quarterback picking his spots in an offense that wins on the ground.

This week the ground game should be even easier. Northwestern's defense allows a 41.7% success rate, 90th in the country, and it's missing four defensive linemen and four linebackers. Turbo Richard is running for 7.7 a carry, and Lee Beebe Jr. takes a real share of the work behind him. When Indiana can move the chains with the run, it doesn't need Hoover to throw 30 times.

Hoover's efficiency is real. Ten touchdowns and no interceptions will get anyone's attention. But his yards per attempt came against a schedule that ranks 135th. Northwestern's whole defensive identity is limiting explosives and making teams drive the length of the field. That approach takes away the long completions that let Hoover pile up yardage on so few throws. Short fields and red-zone touchdowns fill up the scoreboard, but they don't fill up his passing line.

Then there's the fourth quarter. I'm laying 19.5 because I think this gets away from Northwestern. If it does, Hoover is likely on the sideline for part of the second half while the backups run clock. He would need to clear his own average by 35 yards on limited volume, with a short night as a real possibility.

The risk is a couple of busted coverages turning into 60-yard touchdowns, and Northwestern's thinned-out secondary makes that possible. But the volume isn't there to get to 252 unless the game stays close, and I don't expect it to. Under 251.5.
