The read
Friday night in Piscataway, Big Ten Network cameras on, and a winless Rutgers team hosts FCS Howard with Greg Schiano chasing a 100th win at the school and the hot seat talk getting louder.
Nobody needs convincing that Rutgers is the better team. The question is whether this Rutgers team can win by 42, and nothing it has done this season points that way. Rutgers is 0-3 and ranks 136th in game control. It lost at home to UMass 37-21. It has committed 10 turnovers in three games, with 9 interceptions split between Dylan Lonergan and AJ Surace, and Lonergan has thrown at least one in each game he has played. When Rutgers does move the ball, drives stall: 3.294 points per scoring opportunity, 109th of 138. Covering a number this big means turning nearly every trip into seven and never handing the ball back. This offense has done the opposite.
The other half of the math is the Rutgers defense. It ranks 106th in SP+ defense, allows a 47.2% success rate (125th of 138), and has 3 sacks and 8 tackles for loss through three games. Howard's offense is limited. Ja'Shawn Scroggins is completing 45.6% of his throws, and the Bison managed 57 total yards at Indiana. Rutgers is not Indiana, though. A defense getting this little pressure gives Scroggins a cleaner pocket than he saw in Bloomington, and Howard needs only one or two scores to make 41.5 a very long climb. A Rutgers giveaway or an Antonio Hunter return could supply one of them.
The Indiana game also shows how blowouts end. A top five team and defending national champion scored 20, 21 and 14 in the first three quarters and zero in the fourth. Once the result is settled, the starters sit. Schiano needs a win, and style points do nothing for the hot seat. Lonergan has already missed a game this season, and Big Ten play resumes next. I expect backups and a running clock once Rutgers is safely ahead, and big numbers usually die in the fourth quarter.
Howard also arrives with 13 days of rest off a bye. Rutgers is coming off a physical 42-35 loss to USC on six days' rest. Howard played No. 23 Richmond to a 28-21 finish after trailing by 20 at the half. Ted White's own résumé includes assistant stops at Maryland and UCLA, so this staff knows what a Big Ten opponent looks like.
The Rutgers case is real. KJ Duff has 419 yards and 6 touchdowns, and the offense ranks 17th in explosiveness, which can pile up touchdowns fast against an FCS secondary. If Howard never crosses midfield, this can get away. My bet is that a team with 10 turnovers and this much trouble finishing drives will leave enough points on the field, and a rested Howard team will find enough of its own, to stay inside the number.

QUARTERBACK
Dylan Lonergan is RUTG's projected starter
7.60 Y/ADylan Lonergan is RUTG's projected starting quarterback. Lonergan returned from a one-week injury absence to start and play the entirety of Rutgers' Sept 19 loss to USC (252 yds, 3 TD, 2 INT). Reporting through Sept 22 (three days before the Howard game) references his return but no article explicitly confirms his start specifically for the Sept 25 Howard game. 2026 line: 494 passing yards, 52.3% completions, 7.60 yards per attempt, 5-5 TD-INT over 2 games.
Ja'Shawn Scroggins is HOW's projected starter
5.91 Y/AJa'Shawn Scroggins is HOW's projected starting quarterback. Scroggins has been Howard's starting QB through the 2026 season, including the Sept 12 loss at Indiana (8-15, 43 yds, 1 INT) and is referenced with season passing stats (467 yds, 4 TDs) in a Sept 22 preview of the Rutgers matchup, but no article explicitly confirms him as starter for the Sept 25 Rutgers game specifically. 2026 line: 467 passing yards, 45.6% completions, 5.91 yards per attempt, 4-2 TD-INT over 3 games.
TRENCHES
RUTG: 117.3 rushing yards per game to HOW's 86
31.3 YPGHOW is at 86 rushing yards per game over 3 games; RUTG is at 117.3 over 3 games. Those are this season's games through Sep 24. Last season HOW was at 123.3 over 12 games and RUTG at 141 over 12 games.
PACE & SCRIPT
HOW @ RUTG carries a 56.5 market total
56.5The market expects points in this one: 56.5 sits 6 above the 50.5 median, and that median comes from only 3 games with posted totals on this slate, so the comparison is thin. A number that high usually means the book expects both offenses to finish drives rather than trade punts. For it to crack, one side has to stall early and turn this into a slower game. If you look at this total, the question is whether both teams can keep scoring for four quarters.
RUTG: 25.7 points per game to HOW's 17.3
8.3 PPGHOW is at 17.3 points per game over 3 games; RUTG is at 25.7 over 3 games. Those are this season's games through Sep 24. Last season HOW was at 19.8 over 12 games and RUTG at 28.7 over 12 games.
TURNOVERS
HOW: 1.33 turnovers committed per game to RUTG's 3.33
2 TORutgers is giving the ball away 3.33 times a game through three games, after just 0.92 a game over 12 games last season. Howard sits at 1.33, right in line with its 1.42 from last year. Three games is a small window, and last season's number says Rutgers should clean this up. A Howard defense that gets a couple of extra possessions is the one path to keeping this close, so weigh how much of Rutgers' early sloppiness you expect to carry over.
MISMATCH
HOW: 1.33 turnovers a game to RUTG's 3.33
1.33 VS 3.33Rutgers is giving the ball away 3.33 times a game through 3 games, while Howard sits at 1.33. Last season Rutgers was at 0.92 over 12 games, so this is a short-sample spike from a team that usually protects the ball. Howard's 1.42 last season matches what it is doing now. Turnover rates swing hard over 3 games and tend to drift back, so bet Rutgers expecting cleaner play, with extra Howard possessions as the risk if the sloppiness lasts.
COVERAGE
RUTG: 39.4% third downs allowed to HOW's 50%
10.6 PPRutgers lets opponents convert 39.4% of third downs over three games, and Howard allows 50% over the same number of games. Howard giving up half its third downs means drives keep going, which lets the Rutgers offence stay on the field and control the clock. Three games is a small sample for both, but the gap is wide enough that Rutgers sustaining drives is the likely script at home.

SITUATIONAL
RUTG: 280.3 team passing yards per game to HOW's 158.3
122 YPGHOW is at 158.3 team passing yards per game over 3 games; RUTG is at 280.3 over 3 games. Those are this season's games through Sep 24. Last season HOW was at 165.3 over 12 games and RUTG at 266.1 over 12 games.
RUTG: 4.67 fourth-down attempts per game to HOW's 1.67
3 ATT/GRutgers is going for it on fourth down 4.67 times a game over three games, up from 2.83 last season, while Howard stays conservative at 1.67, near its 1.75 from last year. The Rutgers jump could be a coaching shift or just game situations in a three-game window. More fourth-down tries mean more swing plays in Rutgers' possessions, which adds variance to their drives and to how the scoreboard moves.
HOW has 7 more days of rest
13d vs 6dHoward walks into Rutgers with two weeks to prepare, coming off a bye with 13 days since its last game, while Rutgers is on a normal 6-day week. The extra time lets a staff heal bumps, install wrinkles and study one opponent twice as long. Rutgers, at home, runs its usual routine. A rest edge is one input, so weigh it next to the talent gap and home field when sizing up this game.
RUTG: 21.3 first downs per game to HOW's 13
8.3 FDHOW is at 13 first downs per game over 3 games; RUTG is at 21.3 over 3 games. Those are this season's games through Sep 24. Last season HOW was at 17.4 over 12 games and RUTG at 23.3 over 12 games.

1- GARY'S PICKDYLAN LONERGANPASSING YARDS UNDER 255.5
My read on this game is that Rutgers gets ahead, Schiano takes his win, and the fourth quarter turns into backups and a running clock. That script works against a 255.5 passing number for Dylan Lonergan.
Lonergan has thrown for 494 yards in the two games he has played, so this line already asks him to beat his own pace. He has completed 34 of 65 passes, barely over half, with 5 touchdowns and 5 interceptions, and he has thrown at least one pick in every game. That is not a quarterback a coach on the hot seat wants throwing late with a big lead. Lonergan has also already missed a game this season, and Big Ten play resumes next week. Once this is decided, protecting him matters far more than padding his stat line.
The ground game points the same way. Antwan Raymond has 62 carries through three games, and against an FCS front with the lead in hand, Rutgers should lean on him and Clay Thevenin to drain the clock. Every drive that ends on the ground or inside the red zone takes a chunk out of Lonergan's total. Rutgers has been poor at finishing drives, but a short field after a Howard punt still shortens the throws.
The risk is KJ Duff. He has 419 yards and 6 touchdowns, and this offense ranks 17th in explosiveness, so two or three shots over the top in the first half could get Lonergan to 200 quickly. But a big number like this usually needs four full quarters from the starter. I don't expect him to get them. Under 255.5.
