The read
A sold-out Sanford Stadium gets a Saturday afternoon whiteout, with Western Kentucky visiting Athens before Georgia begins SEC play.
Georgia’s running game against this WKU front is where my case starts. The Hilltoppers allowed 323 rushing yards at Nevada, and their defensive problems extended beyond the long gains: opponents succeeded on 50.8% of plays. Georgia scored touchdowns on its first five possessions against Tennessee State, showing it could finish sustained possessions as well as strike quickly. The opponent matters, but the combination of consistent advancement and explosive gains fits the weaknesses WKU showed.
The continuity up front strengthens that matchup. Georgia opened with four offensive linemen who had prior college starts; WKU returned only one starting offensive lineman. Gunner Stockton also brings established starting experience into an offense that distributed the ball effectively in its opener. I expect Georgia to create repeated scoring opportunities while making WKU work harder to sustain its own possessions.
WKU’s offense provides the strongest argument against laying this number. It produced 367 yards and 23 first downs at Nevada, so there is evidence it can move the ball and extend possessions. Its problem was converting that movement into meaningful scoring. Rodney Tisdale Jr. needed 40 attempts for 203 passing yards, and the offense struggled in short-yardage situations. Its second touchdown came with only 1:18 remaining. My judgment is that those finishing problems persist against Georgia often enough to let the Bulldogs keep adding separation.
At -40.5, the second half is central to the ticket. Georgia scored four second-half touchdowns after turning extensively to reserves last week, while its defense kept Tennessee State scoreless after halftime. That gives the favorite a demonstrated route to extending a lead through substitutions. Today’s rotation is not announced, and an overmatched FCS opponent limits how confidently that production transfers.
WKU can cover by sustaining drives, protecting the ball and collecting points late. Georgia’s penalties in the opener also show how it could help those possessions along. I still favor Georgia’s four-quarter path: the Hilltoppers’ difficulty stopping drives and finishing their own creates opportunities for the margin to keep growing. I’m backing that matchup to carry Georgia through this substantial number.
