The read

Noon at Michie Stadium, with Army and South Florida opening conference play after very different opening wins. Army arrives with continuity on offense; the Bulls bring a rebuilt team into its first road test.

I’m backing Army’s ability to sustain offense over four quarters. Eight returning offensive starters, including four offensive linemen, give its opening performance more substance than the blowout score alone. Against Bryant, Army’s offensive stuff rate was 5.3%, and it generated its scoring without forcing a turnover. I don’t expect that production to transfer intact against USF, but the combination of experienced blocking and multiple rushing options is the foundation of this bet.

USF’s run defense is the strongest argument against laying the points. It held FIU to 80 rushing yards and produced a 25.0% defensive stuff rate. Its staff also brings familiarity with Army’s offense. If that front disrupts early downs and forces Cale Hellums into passing situations, the Bulls have a credible path to keeping this inside the number.

The problem is what USF’s offense gives that defense between possessions. Against FIU, 24.3% of its runs were stopped at or behind the line, its passing-down success rate was 22.7%, and it never gained more than 14 yards on a play. All three takeaways led to scoring possessions. Those were valuable defensive plays, but another supply of short fields is a demanding requirement against an Army offense that committed no turnovers in its opener.

South Florida can improve, and Bryant did not provide the defensive test Army faces here. My judgment is that Army’s offensive continuity will translate more reliably than USF’s takeaway-supported scoring. I expect the Bulls’ front to create resistance, but their offense to struggle to sustain enough possessions to relieve it. That gives Army a four-quarter path to separation, which is why I’m taking the spread at -102 rather than paying -164 simply to win.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

TRENCHES

  • ARMY is +461 rush yards per game

    461 YPG

USF is at 108 rushing yards per game over 1 game; ARMY is at 569 over 1 game. Those are current-2026 team-game results through 2026-09-11.

PACE & SCRIPT

  • ARMY is scoring +40 points per game

    40 PPG

USF is at 19 points per game over 1 game; ARMY is at 59 over 1 game. Those are current-2026 team-game results through 2026-09-11.

  • USF @ ARMY carries a 45.5 market total

    45.5

USF @ ARMY’s current FanDuel total is 45.5, 9 points below the 54.5 median across 43 games with posted totals on this slate, placing it firmly on the lower-scoring side. That expectation would crack if scoring moves closer to the slate median.

TURNOVERS

  • USF's defense takes the ball away 3 more times per game

    3 TO

USF is at 3 takeaways per game over 1 game; ARMY is at 0 over 1 game. Those come from the opposing team boxes in the games each side has already played this 2026 season, through 2026-09-11.

MISMATCH

  • ARMY's ground game against USF's — 569 rush yards a game to 108

    569 VS 108

The widest gap on this matchup's tape: rush ypg — USF 108, ARMY 569, over 1 and 1 game samples.

COVERAGE

  • ARMY's secondary gives up 203 fewer passing yards per game

    203 YPG

Through 2026-09-11, ARMY allowed 98 passing yards per game over 1 game, 203 fewer than USF’s 301, based on opposing team boxes this 2026 season. Without opponent quality or passing-volume context, the one-game gap cannot distinguish secondary strength from schedule and script.

  • ARMY allows a third-down conversion rate 8 percentage points lower

    8 PP

USF is at 29.4% third downs allowed over 1 game; ARMY is at 21.4% over 1 game. Those come from the opposing team boxes in the games each side has already played this 2026 season, through 2026-09-11.
