The read
A noon kickoff in Ann Arbor, a sold-out Maize Out, and Michigan’s first chance to answer an unsettling opener. Oklahoma arrives after a comfortable win, but this is the first road examination for its rebuilt offense.
I’m backing Oklahoma because its offensive answers fit the problems Michigan showed. The Sooners used two-tight-end formations extensively against UTEP, with Rocky Beers contributing a 40-yard touchdown. Michigan’s defensive film documented linebackers losing assignments against play-action, misdirection and rollout passes. That gives Oklahoma a plausible way to create openings beyond simply asking Isaiah Sategna III to win outside. John Mateer’s passing-down success rate is a team statistic, not an individual one: Oklahoma succeeded on 46.2% of those downs, compared with Michigan’s 28.6%. It is only an opener for each, but Oklahoma demonstrated more ways to keep possessions alive.
Michigan’s defense is the strongest argument against laying these points. It allowed no touchdowns against Western Michigan, and its 32.9% success rate allowed was comparable to Oklahoma’s 33.9%. Oklahoma’s shutout also benefited from three missed field goals. Michigan can keep this close if it limits long completions and makes the Sooners finish sustained drives. Mateer’s late-season interception problems are another credible obstacle; his clean opener does not erase them.
My deciding concern is whether Michigan can support that defense throughout the game. Bryce Underwood’s offense stalled between its opening and closing touchdown drives, committed three turnovers, and relied on JJ Buchanan for 126 of its 170 passing yards. Oklahoma’s front offers a specific mechanism for those difficulties to persist: the opener’s disruption, backed by the reported ability to disguise where pressure comes from. I expect that matchup to interrupt Michigan’s possessions often enough for Oklahoma’s broader offensive options to create separation. That supports the spread ticket, with measured confidence given Michigan’s defensive resistance and the small current-season sample.
