The read
Minnesota has a Gold Out at Huntington Bank Stadium, and both teams arrive after commanding opening wins. Their first meeting brings Mississippi State to Minneapolis for its first road appearance of the season.
I’m backing Mississippi State because Kamario Taylor gives its offense multiple ways to sustain a threat. His opener produced 354 passing yards, four touchdown passes and 59 rushing yards, with Anthony Evans III and Marquis Johnson both contributing substantial receiving production. The rushing threat has evidence beyond ULM: Taylor ran for 173 yards in last season’s loss to Ole Miss. That does not establish how he performs against Minnesota, but it supports treating his mobility as a meaningful part of this matchup.
The blocking comparison strengthens that case. Minnesota had 23.1% of its carries stopped at or behind the line in its opener, compared with Mississippi State’s 13.5%. Those performances came against different opponents, but Minnesota’s uneven run blocking is a concrete concern beneath its scoring total. My read is that Mississippi State can make Lindsey shoulder more of the offense, while Taylor’s running gives the Bulldogs another option when their passing game meets resistance. I also discount the scale of State’s rushing total: J.J. Hill’s 118 yards came entirely in the fourth quarter after the game was settled.
Minnesota’s strongest answer is efficient possession football backed by defensive disruption. Drake Lindsey completed 19 of 24 passes in the opener, and Minnesota allowed successful offensive plays just 10.9% of the time. If that defense contains Taylor while Lindsey keeps moving the chains, the Gophers can win this game. That is the clearest threat to the ticket. Both opening opponents limit how far those performances can be projected, and Minnesota’s two punt-return touchdowns are another contribution that cannot simply be carried forward.
I give Mississippi State the edge because its combination of quarterback mobility, receiving production and the better opening blocking performance offers the more convincing route to sustained scoring. That is enough for me to lay the short spread at even money.
