The read
California heads east to the JMA Wireless Dome for the ACC opener. Syracuse follows a dominant opening weekend; Cal follows a game that was tied before unraveling in the fourth quarter.
The matchup I’m buying is Syracuse’s running game against Cal’s defensive front. Syracuse averaged 5.6 yards per carry in its opener. Cal allowed 277 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns, and UCLA’s final three touchdown possessions consisted entirely of runs. The concern extends beyond those breakaways: Cal allowed a 56.6% offensive success rate and stopped only 3.5% of opposing carries at or behind the line. My expectation is that Syracuse can sustain drives against that front without needing the turnovers that helped inflate its opening victory.
Cal has a credible answer through Adam Mohammed, who contributed 120 rushing yards and 46 receiving yards. Its offense produced both a quick scoring drive and a sustained touchdown march against UCLA, and its successful plays generated more value than Syracuse’s did in the opener. That is the strongest case for taking the points: Cal can threaten through more than one avenue, and Syracuse’s defensive dominance came against New Hampshire. This is a more demanding assignment.
What puts me on Syracuse is the difference between Cal’s ability to produce good possessions and its ability to sustain them while getting stops. Cal’s offensive success rate was 33.7%, compared with Syracuse’s 52.6%. The opponent difference deserves substantial weight, but Cal’s problems were not confined to a tipped interception or a misleading final score. Its defensive front repeatedly failed when UCLA kept running. I expect that weakness to give Syracuse the more dependable offensive foundation across the game.
Syracuse’s biggest obstacle is its own execution: 12 penalties for 125 yards and two failed extra-point attempts are meaningful concerns when laying more than a field goal. I’m accepting that risk because my read calls for separation through sustained offense, rather than merely a home victory. That makes the spread at -108 the ticket I want over the moneyline at -170.
