The matchup carrying my decision is SMU’s passing game against Florida State’s coverage. The late 90-yard touchdown drive also showed Florida State could respond when its opponent closed the gap. SMU’s rebuilt defensive front faces a real test here. What tilts my decision is that Florida State’s production came alongside uneven blocking and protection; the backs helped overcome those problems, but the offense has not demonstrated that the problems are corrected. SMU’s strongest obstacle is sustaining its own execution. Jennings threw three second-half interceptions in the Holiday Bowl, and SMU went scoreless after halftime. That is a concrete example of how an early offensive advantage can disappear. The changed receiving personnel adds another execution challenge. My bet assumes the new targets can execute the quick passing game and Jennings can avoid another stretch of damaging turnovers. Quarterback and offensive-line continuity support that judgment, but they do not guarantee it. I’m taking the spread because I expect SMU’s passing advantage to generate sustained scoring opportunities across four quarters. The unresolved issue most capable of changing my decision is Florida State’s coverage adjustment: if the Seminoles have corrected the spacing and communication that allowed those accessible completions, the main advantage behind this ticket weakens considerably.
