Massachusetts Minutemen at Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Thursday night in Piscataway brings two reconstructed teams and two quarterbacks making their first starts for their new programs. Rutgers owns the clearer talent and matchup advantages, but the wager asks whether it can turn those advantages into a win of at least 29 points.

I’m taking the points because Rutgers must create that separation while debuting Dylan Lonergan and a new defensive system. The Scarlet Knights averaged 28.7 points while allowing 31.8 per game last season. Those figures are not forecasts against UMass, but they make four-touchdown-plus dominance too expensive to assume.

William Watson III gives UMass mobility against a Rutgers defense that previously allowed quarterbacks to escape when pressure lost containment. The Minutemen’s 11.1-point and 247.5-yard offensive averages were dreadful, but this is now a roster with 56 newcomers. That turnover does not guarantee improvement; it does make last season’s baseline less precise at such a large number.

The danger is Antwan Raymond. He rushed for 1,241 yards and 13 touchdowns last season, while UMass surrendered 278 rushing yards to Bowling Green and 363 to Ohio. Rutgers has a credible route to controlling possession and producing a rout. Even so, UMass does not need to win or match Rutgers offensively. Watson only needs to create enough offense, and the rebuilt defense enough resistance, to keep Rutgers from clearing 28.5.
