The read

Halloween night at Toyota Center brings a 5-1 Rockets team on the second night of a back-to-back against a 4-1 Thunder team that has lost four rotation players in a week. The number says this is close. I don't think it is.

OKC won early by taking the ball away and running. In its first three games it had 8, 12 and 15 steals and 12, 10 and 19 fast-break points. Without Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace, Chet Holmgren and Alex Caruso, those numbers fell to 3 and 4 steals and 2 and 0 fast-break points. This same group lost 120-96 at Dallas on Wednesday and trailed by 27. Yes, they shot 5-32 from three. Give them their season rate of 30.9% and that's roughly 15 more points, and they still lose by about 9. Ajay Mitchell has been terrific, with 59 points on 22-36 shooting over two games. The depth behind him and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is thin, though: Josh Dix is 1-11 from the field in 46 minutes.

Then there's the glass. Gilgeous-Alexander said it himself: "We've got to be better on the glass." OKC gave up 22 and 18 second-chance points in those two games, and Holmgren is now out 8-10 weeks. Houston grabbed 20 offensive rebounds at Dallas last night, and Alperen Şengün is back tonight. He scored 29, 17 and 29 in the three games before his back flared up.

Both teams just played in Dallas. Houston lost by only 5 there last night without Şengün or Reed Sheppard while shooting 7-29 from three. Tonight they swap Fred VanVleet for Şengün and play at home, where they've won by 18 and 10.

The risks are real. This is Houston's third game in four nights. Amen Thompson, Kevin Durant and Jabari Smith Jr. each played 35-plus minutes last night before losing the fourth quarter 40-27. With VanVleet and Sheppard out, Marcus Smart and Thompson have to run the offense, while OKC has had two days of rest. Gilgeous-Alexander can swing a game this close by himself.

Still, OKC has lost its defense and its rebounding, and Houston's size goes right at both. This pick depends on Şengün suiting up. If he's a late scratch, I'm off it.

REPLACEMENT

  • Nikola Topic is OUT for OKC

    OUT

Nikola Topic is out for Oklahoma City after low back surgery. This is a known, ongoing absence.

  • Alex Caruso is OUT for OKC

    OUT

Alex Caruso is out for Oklahoma City with a right ankle sprain. That removes another defender from a Thunder roster already missing Williams, Holmgren and Wallace.

SITUATIONAL

  • HOU on a back-to-back, OKC rested

    B2B vs 3d

Houston plays on no rest while Oklahoma City comes in with three days off. The rest edge goes to the road team, but OKC is missing a long list: Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, Alex Caruso, Cason Wallace, Nikola Topic and Thomas Sorber. Houston is also without Steven Adams. Tired legs against a thin roster is the matchup to weigh here.

    Oklahoma City Thunder

With Chet Holmgren gone for a couple of months, Hartenstein is the only real big this Thunder team has, and it shows. Since Chet went down he has pulled 12, 13 and 14 boards in about 26 minutes a night. Kenrich Williams is starting at the four, Jaylin Williams floats outside, and Aday Mara is a backup. Nobody else in that frontcourt is going to take rebounds off his plate.

The matchup helps him too. Houston is on the second night of a back to back, its third game in four nights, and is playing without VanVleet and Sheppard. That leaves Smart, Thompson and Bogdanovic handling the ball. This team already struggles from three, and it went 7 for 29 in Dallas last night. Tired legs against a rested opponent usually means more misses, and long misses on defense go to the center. Shai said after the Dallas loss that the team has to be better on the glass, so I expect Daigneault to lean on his big man. The spread is under a field goal, so a blowout shouldn't cut his minutes the way the Dallas game did. Sengun coming back puts a real body on him, and that is why the number is ten instead of eleven. I still like the over at this price.

    Oklahoma City Thunder

This line still prices Ajay Mitchell like the bench scorer he was two weeks ago. With Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace and Caruso all out, he is now the second option behind Shai, and he has played like it: 30 against Phoenix and 29 in Dallas as a starter. He was also efficient in both games. He got downhill, finished at the rim and lived at the line against the Suns. He isn't relying on threes, so a cold shooting night doesn't sink him.

Houston has the length to make this hard. Amen Thompson will spend most of the night on Shai, though, and that puts Mitchell against whoever is left. Tonight that is a thin guard group: VanVleet is resting, Sheppard is hurt, and Smart just came back from a forearm problem. Bogdanovic will see extra minutes, and Mitchell can attack him. Oklahoma City has had two days off and Houston is playing for the second straight night. A close game means Mitchell plays the fourth quarter instead of watching from the bench. I'll take the over at even money for a player who has become the team's second scorer.
