The read

It's Halloween night at Frost Bank Center. Minnesota arrives on the second night of a back-to-back without Anthony Edwards, and Rudy Gobert's back is a question mark. San Antonio is rested, at home and laying 12.5. That is a lot of points to lay with a 3-2 team.

The Spurs haven't been winning by margins like that. Their results so far are -12, -4, +16, +27 and +6 in overtime. They've covered 12.5 once, against the winless Kings, and they're 1-2 at home. The three-game win streak came against short-handed teams: Dallas without Flagg, Irving and Lively, and Utah without Jaren Jackson Jr., Markkanen and Nurkic. The Jazz game was tied at the end of regulation, and the Spurs trailed 108-105 in overtime before a 12-0 run.

Minnesota's two losses came by 2 in overtime at Cleveland and by 5 to Golden State. On Friday, in its second game without Edwards, it beat the Clippers by 26. That game was a blowout, so nobody played more than 33 minutes, which takes some of the sting out of the back-to-back. The Wolves' perimeter defense travels: opponents have made 67 of 220 threes against them, about 30%, and San Antonio shoots about 35% from deep. At roughly 100 possessions a game, covering 12.5 takes a big efficiency gap. Stephon Castle was downgraded with a migraine and could miss this one, which would thin out a rotation that already leaned hard on its starters at Utah.

The risk is in the paint. Victor Wembanyama has made 37 of 64 shots during the win streak, and if Gobert sits, Beringer and Lyles have to handle that. Minnesota has given up 50 or more paint points in four of six games. LaMelo Ball's turnovers (7 at Cleveland, 6 against Golden State) give San Antonio's ball pressure a target. The Wolves were also down 24 to Golden State before a late push made it close. With five games in seven days ahead, Chris Finch has no reason to ride the starters if this gets away early.

Still, this number expects a rout from a team that has managed one. Take the points.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

SITUATIONAL

  • MIN on a back-to-back, SAS rested

    B2B vs 3d

Minnesota plays its second game in two nights while San Antonio has had three days off. On top of that, Minnesota is without Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo, and San Antonio has won three straight. The schedule spot and the injury list point the same way, so the main question for a bettor is how much of that the spread already reflects.

STREAK

  • SAS has won 3 straight

    W3

San Antonio has won 3 straight by 16.3 a game and is 3-2 across its last 5. The wins have been lopsided, but three games is a short run. Big recent margins tend to inflate the next spread, so the margin matters as much as the winning.

    Minnesota Timberwolves

The Edwards injury was supposed to open up shots for Kuminga. Instead the scoring has spread out across the roster. Dosunmu moved into the lineup and has put up 17 and 15, Shannon keeps getting to the line off the bench, and Hyland just dropped 19 in 20 minutes. Kuminga had 5 points on six shots Friday and left in the third quarter without returning.

He has stayed at or under 13 in four of his six games, and the 20 against Golden State is the outlier. Now he is on a back-to-back, third game in four nights, facing the best rim protector in the league. Kuminga scores by attacking the paint, and Wembanyama is waiting there. If Gobert's back keeps him out, Minnesota loses a screener and lob target, and the floor gets more crowded for everyone else.

Then there is the spread. San Antonio is laying 12.5 at home with a full rest edge, and a game that gets away from Minnesota means Finch saves his starters' legs for a heavy week ahead. Fewer minutes, a crowded shot pecking order and Wemby at the rim all point the same way. I am taking the under.
