The read

Halloween night at Fiserv Forum, and the market wants Cleveland to walk into Milwaukee and win by double digits. That's a big ask for a road team on tired legs that hasn't kept a big lead all season.

The Cavs are 3-2, but their margins are −8, +4, +2 in overtime, +10 and −3. The only game that would have covered 9.5 was a 10-point home win over Washington. On the road they're 0-2. They also give leads back. They were up 29 in Philadelphia and lost by 8. They were up 24 on winless Brooklyn and hung on by 4. They were up 15 in Atlanta and lost.

The schedule favors Milwaukee. This is Cleveland's third game in four nights and fifth in eight days, coming off a road back-to-back. The Bucks have had two days off and a full practice built around defense after Taylor Jenkins took the blame for the Houston loss.

That 32-point loss to Houston also makes Milwaukee look worse than it is. The Bucks' other four games were −12, −7, −11 and +8. Both teams have played in Philadelphia: Cleveland lost by 8, Milwaukee by 11 on the second night of a back-to-back. The Bucks also crash the glass, with 19 or more second-chance points in four of five games, and Cleveland has allowed 15+ offensive rebounds three times.

Tyler Herro has 23 or more points in four of five games. Peyton Watson is 3-for-21 from three, so Milwaukee can sag off him. Jaylon Tyson is out, and Meleek Thomas's return mostly covers that.

There's risk here. Milwaukee has given up 127+ points four times, fouls a lot and turns it over 17.4 times a game, which plays into James Harden's free throws and Cleveland's transition game. The Bucks have also been outscored in four of five fourth quarters, and three of their five games were losses by more than this number. That's why this is a lean, not a hammer.

Still, a tired road favorite that keeps giving back leads, laying a margin it has reached once all season, against a rested home team coming off an embarrassing loss? I'll take the points.

REPLACEMENT

  • Khalifa Diop is OUT for CLE

    OUT

Khalifa Diop is out for Cleveland on a G League assignment. This has little effect on tonight's rotation.

  • Nae'Qwan Tomlin is OUT for CLE

    OUT

Nae'Qwan Tomlin is out for Cleveland with a low back stress reaction. He is a depth piece, so the impact at Milwaukee is likely small.

  • Jaylon Tyson is OUT for CLE

    OUT

Jaylon Tyson is out for Cleveland with a right ankle sprain. That trims the Cavaliers' wing depth tonight at Milwaukee.

    TYLER HERROPOINTS OVER 21.5
    NBAMilwaukee Bucks· -104

    Tyler Herro
    Points over 21.5

    -104 · LOST · ACTUAL 15

    Milwaukee Bucks

Herro is the Milwaukee offense right now. Lines of 24, 34, 23 and 23 tell the story, and the one dud came in Philadelphia on the second night of a back to back. The number I care about most is the Houston game: the Bucks got buried by 32, the starters sat the entire fourth quarter, and Herro still had 23 on 13 shots in 27 minutes. That takes the blowout risk mostly off the table, because when the scoring comes this early and this efficiently, a short night still clears 21.5.

Cleveland arrives on game three in four nights after a road loss in Atlanta where Nickeil Alexander-Walker dropped 25 and Aaron Wiggins added 20. This Cavs group has been leaking points late all season, giving back a 29 point lead in Philly and nearly a 17 point lead to Brooklyn. Peyton Watson is the likely primary defender and has been in foul trouble in three of five games, picking up five fouls or fouling out. Once Watson sits, Herro gets Merrill or a rookie.

Milwaukee has no second creator who can take shots away from Herro. Rollins is shooting the ball poorly and Jaquez lives in the midrange off Herro's gravity. Home floor, two days of rest, and a coach who spent Friday's practice on effort and urgency. I'll take the volume scorer at close to even money.

  • GARY'S PICK
    JARRETT ALLENREBOUNDS UNDER 8.5
    NBACleveland Cavaliers· +104

    Jarrett Allen
    Rebounds under 8.5

    +104 · LOST · ACTUAL 11

    Cleveland Cavaliers

Allen's rebound totals have been 8, 12, 9, 8 and 7, and 8.5 sits right on top of a player who keeps landing just below it. The minutes are capped in the 27 to 30 range, and this sets up as a game where that ceiling could come down. Cleveland is laying 9.5, and if the Cavs build a lead the way they have in most of their games, Atkinson has every reason to protect his bigs on a tired leg.

The bigger issue is who Allen is competing with on the glass. Milwaukee pulled down 61 and 62 rebounds in two of its last three games, with 15 to 17 offensive boards in four of five. Kel'el Ware has posted 14 and 13 rebound games off the bench, Myles Turner pulls Allen away from the rim when he spaces, and Kuzma and Jaquez both crash. Evan Mobley also takes a big share of Cleveland's defensive boards, having reached double figures in three of the five games.

Allen's best rebounding night came against a Washington team that played small and missed 24 threes. Milwaukee shoots plenty of threes too, but it sends bodies to the glass behind them. Getting plus money on a line Allen hasn't cleared in three of five games is the right side.
